TEAM TARZAN LOG

TEAM TARZAN
READY: START

Team Tarzan roster: Anastasia, Ikuo Ryuuzaki, Jack Kelly, Kasen Ibaraki, Keigo Asano, Kurogane, Kurt Wagner, Silver, Yamatonokami Yasusada, Yaeger, Yosuke Hanamura, Yugi Mutou.

The city's been under siege for what feels like hours. It's only on August 3rd that you learn it's been a matter of days. Monsters begin pulling Retrospec users through portals left and right, large gaping holes in reality that spit you out in any given location around the city.

However, just as you think you're finally getting away, a large blue portal opens and you're snatched up. No amount of fighting and struggling will free you and soon the pressure is too great to ignore. Darkness fills your vision and the last thing you may remember is the sound of the monkeys howling...

This is the Team Tarzan Event Log. You are free to toplevel and thread as you choose on this log, but only team members may utilize this log. Important links to mod toplevels are: Mod Questions & Participation Reporting. Please be aware you are responsible for reporting your own participation & objective completion efforts with links; the moderators will try to keep up with threads, but as we are currently running several teams with participation, we require you to keep us up to date! Please read each of the toplevels and instructions!

The schedule for Team Tarzan is as follows:
3RD: Objective 1 posted (9PM EST) | Objective 1 Part Two
10TH: Objective 1 closes (8PM EST), Objective 2 posted (9PM EST) | Objective 2 Part Two
17TH: Objective 2 closes (8PM EST), Objective 3 posted (9PM EST) | Object 3 Part Two
24th: Objective 3 closes (8PM EST), Final city-wide log posted (9PM EST)
Objectives will be given in mod toplevels to this post with instructions; please check the log currently for Objective 1 to see how this will work.

[HELP YOURSELF, BUDDY... Yasusada's more than wary about... well, everything in this castle to be honest, but he can't deny that he's pretty hungry too. The rations they've been provided with have been nutritious enough, but his mom is a chef, so he's pretty dang spoiled.

--Actually, speaking of that:]

When we get back home, you can come to my mom's bistro. I'm sure she'll treat you. [Since he's under the impression that she's either frantically wondering where he is, or magically assuming he's on vacation... little does he know that he apparently DOESN'T EXIST TO HIS OWN FAMILY ANYMORE but anyway.]

Are there any pictures in it or anything? [He's calling over his shoulder, though, not really looking as he pokes around the other side of the room. These sure are some pretty huge tables... is that something shiny underneath one? OFF HE GOES TO INVESTIGATE.] Or any other books that go with it?
insantafe: (don't you know that we's a family)

[personal profile] insantafe 2017-08-19 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I'll have to take you up on that.

[ Like he would ever pass that up! Especially after all this. Jack may not have the most sophisticated palate, but he can certainly appreciate a well-cooked meal, and what he wouldn't give for one right about now...

Okay, okay, snap out of it, Kelly. We've got work to do! Or something. He flips through the book, increasingly more confused as he flips the pages. Not a single word he recognizes. Just what is this thing? ]

There's a few, but it's mostly all in some language I've never seen before. [ And nothing else on the shelf matches. Must be a one-off. ] Nope, doesn't look like there's else. This one's pretty unique.

[ And judging from the past few weeks, that probably means they should keep their eyes on this thing, whether they can read it or not. Fine. He'll just tuck it under his arm and keep looking, then. ]
okitactless: (hmmmm)

[personal profile] okitactless 2017-08-19 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah! We're not hurting for customers, but she really likes meeting new people.

[Yasu's NPC mom is good people...

But, right, not really the time to worry about that. He crouches down, using his free hand to paw at what's apparently a shield, haphazardly discarded beneath the table. Hm...]

This doesn't seem right. [Well, okay, none of this seems right, but still. With a little effort, he manages to extract the shield, holding it a tad awkwardly. Shields are heavier than he thought...] Hey, do you see any armor around anywhere? Anything that might match this?

[Lifting it up high, so Jack can see--if there are other signs of armor or weapons haphazardly discarded around here, then fine, he could brush it off as people just forgetting to grab their stuff. But if not, it's probably worth proceeding with caution.]
insantafe: (I never planned on someone like you)

[personal profile] insantafe 2017-08-20 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He gives the shield a good, long look before going back to the search. White and gold, huh? White and gold... Well, there's a glint of light over there, under a chair, so Jack kneels down to get a better look. ]

Huh... Well, it's no armor, and it doesn't match, but I found this?

[ He pulls out a long staff, black with a green orb on top. That must've been the reflection he'd seen. ]

Think it might go with the book? These are, like, staples for that magic stuff, right? Books no one can read and creepy-looking staffs?

[ Why not? They've seen weirder things. Staff in hand, because who knows if they'll need it for more weird stuff later, Jack is pushing himself up again when he hears a loud crash, and the whole room starts to rumble. The book slips from his grasp, but the staff gives him an extra point of balance so he can get to his feet and look around. ]

Hey! What happened to the exits?

[ As soon as the words leave his mouth, something drops from the ceiling - it almost looks like one of the monsters he'd seen at the convention center, when everything went to hell. ]

Oh, well, that's just great. Locked in with something that wants to kill us. You know, these guys really need to work on their creativity. This is getting real old real fast. [ Kicking the book and the staff under the table, Jack clumsily draws the sword he'd picked up from the armory. ] Guess we're getting a crash course today.

[ Oh god they're going to die. ]
okitactless: (grief seeds)

I'm so sorry jack gets stuck with this... 1/2

[That sure is a monster crashing into the room, wow. Yasusada hears it before he sees it, and as he stands up he calls out:]

Just hide, I've got it!

[It's meant to be reassuring. It's not bravado, not some false sense of heroism--Yasusada grew up fighting, and he'd successfully fought of plenty of monsters back in the city. It's luck, he supposes, that's kept him from having to deal with any fighting here, but he's far from unprepared--and if he hasn't needed any armor before, he's assuming he won't need any now. He doesn't consider himself invincible by any means, but he knows he's strong, and he knows he can beat whatever this is without putting innocents in harm's way.

That assumption lasts until he turns around.

His hand had gone to his belt, intending to use the sword he'd swiped from the armory (because even now, he doesn't want to know what it feels like, using his "vessel" to take a life). But as soon as he actually sees the monster, he freezes, blue eyes wide and bright as the horrific aura around their enemy.

It's one of them.

It doesn't look exactly like the monster he'd seen in his dream, the one that had so easily tossed him down the stairs. But it's similar enough that he knows. Already, his heart is pounding, and it's been a long time since he'd genuinely feared an opponent--

--and then his hand is flying to his face, covering his eyes as he stumbles backwards a step, images flashing through his mind.

It's the same place, he can feel it. This place is important. The person speaking to him-- it's still a face he can't make out, but he's important, too. In this moment, he's Yasusada's everything.

"If you aren't going to use that sword now, just when do you plan on using it?"

Following him is second nature. Obeying this person, protecting him--it's what he's meant to do, he can feel it in his core. But there's something discordant, a pressure in his chest that he doesn't understand, and there's blood and there's screaming and hacking coughs, and then there's Kiyomitsu, crying, shaking him, begging him to come home. To remember.

A broken hair clip, a broken promise, and in his mind's eye, he sees that person again.

"I will wield this sword until this illness claims me, for loyalty and my comrades. That is the fate I have been given. Finish doing what you need to do with that sword."

And god, he wants to be that strong. No-- he has to be. He is. Because Kiyomitsu is counting on him, everyone is counting on him, and this person--

He would expect nothing less.

They make it out just in time, and these enemies are strong, he knows instinctively. But they're stronger. Together, they finish it. He does what he needs to do, for loyalty, for his comrades...

and for his beloved master.

[Time does not stand still for him. The monster before him doesn't care what he's seeing, what sort of emotional turmoil he's facing right now--it has one purpose, and no reason not to attack them immediately.

The one saving grace is that Yasusada is fast. He always has been, and it's intentionally something he downplays, something that gives him the upper hand, along with the strength he hides under his loose sleeves. And now, with whatever Retrospec has done to him, that speed and strength is even greater, beyond what he should reasonably be able to accomplish. The monster doesn't wait for him to come back to himself, surging forward, but Yasusada's boosted abilities have him darting out of the way just in time.

Admittedly, he's not as clearheaded as he'd like to be, with images replaying in his mind and a tightness in his chest that makes it hard to breathe, but he does know this--if he beat these creatures once, he can do it again.

This time, he draws the sword he'd arrived here with--the one that thrums with life, his life. His yell is ferocious, and while he's nowhere near perfect with his sword, he at least knows what he's doing. It's enough, it should be enough--

--except it isn't.

The sword it's holding isn't right, it doesn't match, and there's something fundamentally wrong about seeing the monster hold it, but none of that matters. It doesn't make the creature any weaker, and it proves that, easily meeting him as he charges forward and knocking him out of the way. He goes flying, and for one horrible, terrifying second, he's tumbling back down those stairs, away from his beloved master. But he hits the ground before he hits a pillar, thankfully, and while it hurts, the cold stone isn't the dark wood he'd expected. Of course, that doesn't change the fact that he'd been flung across the room.

Well.

This is a problem.]

You're crazy if you think I'm just gonna let you do this alone!

[ Please, Yasu. He's got negative points for self-preservation, of course he's not just going to hide when someone's in danger. But you know what - Yasu can still have the first shot. Jack had been lucky enough to avoid these guys that day at the convention center, so he has no clue how to go about taking one out now. If Yasusada has an idea, he's happy to hide and wait to see what that is before making a move.

But then he peeks out from behind his pillar, and... it looks like Yasusada's frozen in place? His eyes dart between the two of them, trying to figure out what happened. Is the other guy hurt? Jack hasn't heard anything yet; why isn't Yasusada doing something? One of them has to, or they're both going to die here, and Jack isn't ready for that yet. Taking a deep breath to steel himself, he steps out into plain view, about to shout - just in time to see the monster spring into action. The words on the tip of his tongue turn into a strangled cry, heart in his throat as he sees Yasusada finally move, the two of them almost too fast for his eyes to track. Next thing he knows, Yasusada's being thrown across the room and into a pillar with a horrible crash.

Holy shit.

Okay, no. Jack may not know what he's doing, but he can't just stand here and watch it all go down like a helpless bystander. Besides, he's already drawn his sword. ]

I thought you said you had this!

[ Well. If they survive this, he's adding "monster distractions" to his resume. With Yasusada out of the way for now, its attention is on him. ]

Well, what are you waiting for?! [ Jack raises the sword defiantly, trying to imitate those guys in the movies. ] We ain't got all day!

[DAMN IT, JACK, DON'T MAKE HIS JOB HARDER!!!

Is what he would like to say. It's pure hypocrisy, but he has no patience for those who lack self-preservation instincts if they don't have the skill to back it up. He'd respect Jack just fine for running and hiding, like a normal, smart person would do. Yasusada doesn't think less of people who don't enjoy fighting, but he also doesn't want them charging into a battle for the sake of their own pride, either. Not when they're more likely to get themselves hurt, or worse.

But--

"I thought you said you had this!"

He'd managed to roll and protect his most vital body parts, and while he can tell he hasn't broken anything, it still hurts. But those words hurt more, by far. He'd been absolutely sure they were true.

It doesn't make any sense. The monsters in his memory had been strong, but they'd been stronger--why isn't that true here? He's not weak, he knows that, so why...?

But he doesn't have time to dwell on it. As he struggles to his feet, he hears Jack yelling, and he knows what's happening before he even lifts his head.]

Don't--!

[But, of course, he's too far away to dive in between them. The monster's attention is on Jack, now, and if this were Kashuu or Soujirou or even Yato, Yasusada wouldn't even have to tell them what to do. He doesn't know Jack, can tell just by looking at him that Jack isn't fighter, and that makes all of this a hundred times harder. It isn't Jack's fault, and Yasusada doesn't blame him, but that might not be clear in his frantic tone as he screams across the room, forcing himself to forget the pain in his legs.]

Dive left!

[Jack's got about half a second to listen if he wants to avoid getting hit, the monster going for him with its sharp-clawed hand. Apparently it doesn't think Jack's blood is worthy of gracing its sword.]
insantafe: (guys are fightin' bleedin' fallin')

[personal profile] insantafe 2017-08-23 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
[ The only thing saving Jack's ass right now is the very same thing putting him in danger: the fact that he doesn't think before he does. Regardless of what happened just a minute before, he can tell Yasusada is better at this than he'll ever be, so he listens without hesitation and dives blindly to the side. Even then, he feels the wind of the monster's claw rushing past. ]

Holy--

[ No time to get freaked out! He starts running as soon as he can scramble to his feet, shouting at Yasusada from across the room now that he's back in action. ]

How the hell're we supposed to beat this thing?!
okitactless: (true nature)

[personal profile] okitactless 2017-08-23 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
[It's a good think Jack listens, because not only is the monster fast, but a dagger comes flying through the air immediately after he ducks. It misses, clattering to the floor, and Yasusada swears--but at least the monster isn't trying to pick it up and use it, apparently unconcerned with anything but simple, straightforward murder.]

Just-- give me a second--

[It's been so long since he's had to do this, thinking on his feet for not one, but two people. It's in this moment he realizes that even now, he's surrounded himself with people so similar to himself; hell, even Anya can fire a gun.

There's no question of what weapon he needs to use here--he makes it to the monster, finally, slashing again. But again, his attack is blocked, and he's thrown back with force--this time, he manages a proper landing, but there's a nice scrape on his knee for his trouble.

But, okay. Okay. He needs to calm down. To calm down, and to think, since he obviously can't do this alone. He figures he knows the answer, but he has to ask anyway:]

Have you ever fought before? At all?!
insantafe: (where's it say you gotta live & die here)

[personal profile] insantafe 2017-08-23 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Not with a freaking sword!

[ He's never even seen one before waking up in the jungle?! Sure, fights are common in the orphanage, but those are fist fights, not - not medieval melee!

He's said it before and he will say it again: HE DID NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS.

Thank god he's got running track under his belt. For all his other shortcomings, Jack can move fast, and the adrenaline pumping through his veins is giving him a nice, extra boost to keep him alive. He dives behind another pillar and leans back against it to catch his breath, listening to Yasusada engage from relative safety. Even if he can't fight, sitting still while someone else risks their life just doesn't sit well with him. There's got to be something he can do here. ]

Any chance we can just wear this guy out until he gives up?
okitactless: (glowing eyes)

[personal profile] okitactless 2017-08-23 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
What about without a sword?!

[THAT'S WHY HE SAID "AT ALL" JACK KEEP UP

But okay, yeah, keeping up with the running is probably more important at this point. The monster doesn't seem to discriminate--and the one good thing about this monster is that it is a monster. It isn't human, not cunning enough to pull the sorts of tricks Yasusada's pulled out on the street before. That's the thought he clings to as he dodges, even though the sword hits close enough to shave the ends off of some of his wild mop of a ponytail. Yasusada tries for a kick to its leg as he backs off again, but unsurprisingly, it barely budges.

A sword, then. It's got to be killed by a sword.]

No. [Is his bluntness a good thing or a bad thing, it's so hard to tell... but at least he's made it over near Jack.

...

WHICH ISN'T NECESSARILY A GOOD THING because now the monster is coming towards both of them?!

There's no time--quickly, he sheaths his sword so he can dig in his pocket, quickly shoving the whip he'd taken from the armory into Jack's hand. He'd grabbed it mostly as a substitute rope, but now... well, you make do with what you've got or you die, apparently.]

I need you to get this around it. Neck or legs, I don't care. [All he needs is the distraction, enough time to run the thing through with his blade. Of course, that involves actually getting close enough to it without getting stabbed, or getting their limbs torn off, or getting thrown into the ceiling, or--]

Can you do-- [As if on cue, the monster arrives, taking out the pillar they're hiding behind in one fell swoop. Yasusada does his best to kick Jack out of the way, but he can only do so much before he has to run to the opposite side of the pillar, lest he get crushed.]
insantafe: (I'll say anything I hafta)

[personal profile] insantafe 2017-08-23 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I fought off a dragon with a tripod?

[ He's just a journalist! What do you want from him!!

Jack starts when he suddenly appears nearby, half-expecting the monster instead and nearly swinging the sword on pure instinct. He catches himself half a second later, breathing a quick sigh of relief before Yasusada is shoving something into his hand. After a moment of fumbling with the whip (?!) and sword, he looks back up with a completely blank look on his face. ]

You want me to what? What am I, a cowboy?

[ Before he can even process how to do this, he's being kicked aside with the air rushing out of his lungs. For a moment, Jack is left stunned. And the monster doesn't even have the decency to wait until he can catch his breath to pick up the chase; Jack is up on his feet and running the second he can manage, though somewhere along the way he seems to have lost his sword.

But he still has the whip. While he runs, Jack unfurls the thing and glances over his shoulder, looking for a chance to use it. It won't matter where he catches the thing as long as he catches it, right? No problem! The thing's big enough that he can't possibly miss.

Of course, it would help if he could stop running long enough to actually aim and take a shot! He ducks behind a table to get his bearings, waiting for the monster to turn away. Best to try when it's not looking, right? That way it can't cut through the whip with that sword...

Now!

The first try is a miss, but Jack doesn't let that stop him. Though a chill goes down his spine when it turns back to face him, he takes aim. Miraculously, it wraps around the creature's sword arm, and though Jack struggles to hold it in place, he has it. ]

I've got it!
okitactless: (true nature)

[personal profile] okitactless 2017-08-24 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
[He doesn't know what he wants that's the problem!! It's difficult to plan when his partner is inexperienced (but not reckless; he's reckless enough himself so that's perfectly fine with him). When their enemy is not only ridiculously strong but fast as well, it's hard to take focus away from anything but surviving.

The monster goes for Jack, and Yasusada swears again, moving as quickly as he can to keep track of them. He waits, watching tensely for an opening--and the good news is that he gets one.

The bad news is that he gets one right as the monster decides it's done playing chase, and decides to attack.

Yasusada can't dive in close to stop it--the monster is far too big for that, and he risks getting seriously hurt by a swing from that sword, even if it isn't aimed at him. All he can do is hope that Jack has enough survival instincts to dodge.

But the time it's attacking Jack is the time it's most open for him, so as soon as that happens, he's moving. His legs still hurt from earlier, but he ignores it, moving as fast as he can to strike at the enemy before it can kill his companion.

It hears him coming, and turns as he slashes, catching his blade with its own and using its strength to throw him off again. He lands on his feet, but the impact is enough to make him wince--if his ankle isn't sprained by the end of this, he'll be amazed.

But it's facing him now, and that's what matters. Jack's taking aim, and he tenses, ready to strike--

AND THEN JACK FUCKING MISSES WHAT THE FUCK JACK

That certainly draws the monster's attention back to him, so there's nothing for it. Yasusada grits his teeth and runs, a yell that's nigh feral tearing itself from his throat as he surges forward, and just as Jack somehow, somehow manages to get the whip around it, Yasusada drives his blade into its body with every ounce of strength he has.

It feels horrible.

He pales, his eyes wide as his hands begin to shake, just a little. This is what it feels like to be a sword? This awful sensation? He doesn't have time to dwell on it as the monster grabs him with its free hand, sharp claws digging into his neck hard enough to draw blood--but through instinct, maybe, he summons up what's left of his strength, digging into energy he doesn't truly have to spare in order to rip the sword out of its body through its side. It drops him, and he crumples, his free hand flying to his throat, but the monster itself staggers too, clearly too wounded to attack again.]

Sword-- get the sword-- [He can't tell if he's whispering or screaming, honestly. He's too absorbed in the feeling of blood on his blade, like it's truly smeared all over his skin. Jack will have to be the one to get the sword away, once and for all. All Yasusada has left to offer is one more dagger practically falling out of his pocket.

His throw is far weaker, this time, but they're close enough that it doesn't matter. His aim is true--it hits its target, directly in one of those awful, glowing eyes. If they're going to kill it, it's got to be now.]
insantafe: (I never planned on someone like you)

[personal profile] insantafe 2017-08-24 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Holding onto it is one of the hardest things he's ever done, muscles straining as the monster tries to break away. Jack almost doesn't notice Yasusada land his attack, and lets out a strained cheer when he does, until it retaliates. Instinct makes him want to rush back in and fight it off, or at least distract it, but Yasusada isn't finished yet. The whip falls from the monster's arm as they stagger away from each other.

What is he supposed to do now? Glancing between the two of them, Jack has to wonder. The monster isn't dead yet, but it doesn't look like it could pull off another attack just yet, either. And his sword is somewhere across the room...

A sound - Yasusada? Get the sword...? Well, now that he can actually see it without having to duck for cover, it does match the shield, doesn't it?

Alright, so he'll try to grab the sword. Like hell is he going in there without some kind of defense, though, so the whip will have to do. Even with it severely wounded, Jack approaches cautiously, lashing out the whip to grab the creature's arm again. It hardly even puts up a fight, though it takes all his strength to wrestle the sword out of its grip. As soon as he has it, he backs off to a safe distance, unfurling the whip as he goes. ]

Got it!

[ Just in time to see Yasusada make one final throw, too. And in case that isn't enough, Jack drops the whip and goes in for one last slash, as if to prove a point that they won.

Though it isn't without a few problems of their own. Once the monster is gone, Jack immediately heads to Yasusada's side. ]

Hey, buddy, you alright? You're not looking so good.
okitactless: (patched up)

[personal profile] okitactless 2017-08-24 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's enough. Yasusada knows that even before Jack succeeds in getting the sword, really, but he can't bring himself to relax until he hears that final attack, until the monster roars a sound so horrible, it can only be a death cry. He manages to glance up, watching through his bangs, and once he sees the monster's body begin to dissipate into black smoke, that's when he finally lets out a long, shaky breath.

He doesn't need to look to tell there's blood on his fingers, so he doesn't, gingerly pulling his hand away from his neck and wiping it on his shirt. So much for trying to minimize how serious his injuries look...

He can avoid showing how exhausted he is, though. He's not really built for lengthy fights like this (though, really, who the hell is built to fight off monsters for weeks--oh, yeah, nevermind). So he manages a small smile at Jack, even as he tugs insistently on the fabric of his own shirt until he can feel it tearing. More than anything else, he needs to clean that sword immediately.]

I'll be okay. [So, no, he's not feeling so good, but they don't have time to spare. All he can do is rely on adrenaline to push through until the end.]

What about you? Are you hurt?
