MAGATUS

READY: START.

On the morning of the fourth at 9am, you'll find yourself gathering at the Recollé Zoo and Aquarium. Many of you will find yourself partnered up and with a name in mind, and awaiting in front of you is a large bus with the Retrospec logo on the hood. A text comes through not long after, Zee's name attached.

I'm no Ms. Frazzle, but I think this bus will do the trick. Hope you packed a book or something.

Upon boarding the bus you'll find that's it's equipped for a longer road trip. There are snacks, books, video game consoles, and even a few beds and bathrooms. Just as well, seeing how you're going to be traveling north of the city, traveling through the woods for about seven hours. As you travel, the sky begins to change colors and the temperature drops toward the end of your journey. Outside the window you'll see a mountain range and snow on the ground, and stars streak across the sky as you enter the beautiful region of Magatus.

Permanently semi-dark with beautiful colors streaking across the sky, Magatus is filled with rivers, grass, coniferous trees and snow-capped mountains. The temperature is quite frigid, so travelers will need to bundle up!

The region known as Magatus is fairly open and while there may not a huge population like Recollé, there are small clusters of buildings and homes that characters can find by exploring this region. There is roughly 1,500 square miles to cover in the area claiming to be Magatus and some parts of this region may experiences changes in weather including heavy snow, ice, and blackouts.

Most of the towns are quaint and friendly though most people appear to mind their own business. If spoken to, they will explain that they’ve been enjoying their time alone and away from the hustle and bustle of city life, though it may be a little hard to know if this is actually true. Some of the younger ones will say they’ve lived here their whole life, but most will shy away from the topic of where they came from. Shops that can be found seem to range in the realm of basic general stores, hardware stores, mini foodmarts, and weaponry. The Magatus people truly live a simple life.

The true nature of this region doesn’t seem to come out until nightfall, however. As the light fades and the sky darkens, the colors brighten above and the sound of wolves begin howling nonstop. Depending, you may even hear the sound of snarling and growling, quick footsteps crunching through fresh snow and irritated barking. The townspeople know better than to stay out at night when the wolves run and the shadows dance, and they would advise that anyone from out of town take cover.

Too bad they won’t invite you in. You’re on your own out in the wilderness.

This is the Team Four Event Log! You are free to toplevel and thread as you choose on this log, but only team members may utilize this log.

Remember, your activity to qualify for your two free memories and one item is supplying at least 30 comments spread over the three objectives per group (minimum of 5 comments per objective!) with at least three members of your groups. You will not be eligible if you do not participate in all three objectives somehow, and you will not be eligible if you only stick with your preferred partner!

People who are paired with partners will experience some of the following:

-Telepathic connections, but only the thoughts you don’t want your partner to actually hear. You can also use this to influence your partner’s thoughts.
-Color fades when you’re not cooperating, it brightens when you are.
-Cause and effect. If something happens to your partner, you feel it (i.e. if your partner trips somewhere, you’ll feel the effects.)
-Timers. You and your partner will have a countdown embedded somewhere (hand, foot, chest, whatever) and if you don’t complete your missions and see each other before the timer runs out, consequences occur.

These are not required and you may play with these as little or as much as you want!

[The fortress certainly looks worthy of investigation. There's no telling what secrets might be hidden within - but also of what danger might lurking there as well.

Byakuya presses at his glasses as he listens to Cleo's explanation and nods along.]

Thank you for your elaboration. The more we know of our limits, the better it will be should we have to act on our feet. I don't doubt your ability to protect. And I shall do my own part to be of some use and to prevent any casualties.

[He prides himself on being a leader and looking out for those he works with. But in a situation like this, he sees that he will have to make some concessions and entrust his wellbeing to others instead, due to his own lack of supernatural powers.]

Now... let us proceed. [Byakuya nods at the Feraligatr and follows Silver's lead towards the entrance.]

We'll just have to look out for each other. Let me know if you need any backup.

[He pokes open the door, about to step right into the action, then pauses to look at Byakuya instead.]

You seem like you've got a level head. Look out for us if we get into the thick of it, alright?

[Cleo is strong for sure, but who knows how she gets when she's heated, and he... Well, he can keep a cool head sometimes, but Elda wasn't wrong for worrying about his reckless streak. Those thoughts don't linger for long, however; he steps inside and is immediately welcomed by howls and chains rattling.

They really blew their halloween budget here, that's for sure...]

[... Cleo will just remain quiet after hearing Silver's suggestion. She, uh, is most definitely not cool-headed when she gets mad.

Still, as she hears the howls and the chains, she folds her ears down, placing her hands over them.]

It's quite a noisy welcome in here... Shall we move on? Quickly?

[As Silver addresses him, Byakuya regards him seriously and nods.]

Of course. You can count on me to keep things under control. [While he has his moments of distress, he does also feel like he can reel it in more quickly than most others. And Silver having faith in him bolsters his resolve.

Those noises sure are things, though. Quite the ominous things. He glances towards Cleo as she speaks before starting to move forward.]

Indeed... Quickly and cautiously. That is the way to proceed.

Is it too loud for you, or are you just not into chains?

[Shouldn't have said it like that.]

Don't let it get you too rattled.

[That's not any better...

Silver scoots along at a reasonable pace... Or perhaps too quick of one, to try and forget those two mishaps. This place can't be that big, right? They're sure to find the source of the noise sooner or later.]

Both.

[Of course... It isn't too long before they come to the round room, a wolf's paw gem in the center on a pile of chain links...]

... This... seems like a trap.

[cleo logic: something's easy? it's fake.]

[Byakuya just raises an eyebrow at Silver's comments and looks ahead towards that gray gem at the center of the room.

Cleo's logic isn't so bad, though. He pushes at his glasses as he takes a moment to contemplate.]

It's possible. I'd even say likely. But it doesn't seem like there's anything else to do in this room... Why don't we brace ourselves and stay on guard? A trap is not a trap to a prepared mind.

[Silver takes a few steps forward up until he properly hears their words, at which point he stops his advance. Don't just, you know. Go to grab the gem or anything. Yeah. That's a smart plan. Who would do something stupid like that? He's never sprung a trap before.]

Maybe we can outrun the trap.

[It's a bad idea, but I still want to grab it...]

[Cleo looks between them, and nods.]

Silver, can your, ah... smaller companion get it and get back to us quickly?

And if we stay spread out for the moment, we may not all be caught in it... [He's assuming that the trap will likely involve the chains wrapping around whoever tries to grab the gem, so as long as they're not all caught in it, escape should be easy. And Cleo's suggestion sounds even better - he glances towards Silver.]

Well, Silver? Are any of your creatures up for the task?

[Silver pulls out a Pokéball, eyes the general distance, and nods; that shouldn't be too difficult to pull off.]

Just leave it to us.

[He tosses the ball right at the gem, and his aim strikes true, letting Sneasel emerge just a couple of feet from the gem with enough momentum that he'll have it before he even lands, then bound safely over to the rest of the group without a problem.

That's... How it was supposed to play out, at any rate, but the chains are quick to come alive and smack Sneasel away like an unwanted gnat, batting him right back to Silver like he's a damn baseball. The chain then grabs the gem and amasses into the metallic version of a tentacle monster, holding its chain limbs up high and making broad sweeping strikes as it tries to determine the largest threat.]

[A chain tentacle monster.

Memo to self: Kill Silver for asking if she was into chains later.]

Both of you, back!

[The largest threat? That'll definitely be Cleo, who is practically hurling Silver away, turning towards the chains in one smooth motion. Chains mean both her sword and gun are useless. That leaves...

She punches the air, and spears of ice fly at the chains.]

[His eyes widen as the chains come to life. And he curses himself for underestimating how ridiculous this trap would be.

Byakuya knows his place and takes some steps back to protect himself, while keeping an eye on the others.]

How preposterous...! [That's all he can manage to say at the moment. He'll observe how well Cleo's attack does as he tries to guess at the best way to battle this unnatural beast.]

[A couple of the chains are halted by the ice; they reel back and try to shake off the parts that are frozen, so to speak, then launch at Cleo again, along with a couple of others. A few stragglers decide to focus on everyone else; a couple of tendrils come for Silver and Byakuya and swing in an attempt to herd them closer to Cleo, while one wraps around Feraligatr's leg, managing to grip him firmly but not topple over the crocodile.

Not that there's much time to attempt something like that before Silver recalls him back into the safety of a ball, of course. There's too much to focus on here, but he's pretty sure not letting his buddy get chained up is pretty high on his priority list, and if the ice seems to be giving them pause-]

Let's use ice too!

[Sneasel shakes out his head and blows ice out onto one of the chains. The resulting ice seems to slow it down, and not being able to bend means that it's going to have a harder time latching onto everyone, but how many are there? Eight? Nine...?]

This isn't working...

[Or, well, it's working, but too slowly.

But then Cleo remembers something about her ice magic. How it worked when she first woke up with it...]

Both of you, get behind me, now!

[She's starting to retreat a bit herself, trying to get back towards the hall they came from, keeping herself facing the chains. If she can keep their attention...]

[Byakuya stays on his feet and runs as the chain nears him, resulting in him successfully being herded towards Cleo. The ice is indeed slowing it down, but will it be enough to win this fight? He does hope that they can secure that gem too, but getting through this alive is the priority...

As Cleo speaks, he does comply and stand behind her, but he cannot guess what she's attempting.]

Do you have a plan?

[As Byakuya makes his way towards Cleo, the chains going after him focus their attention on Cleo instead, trying to help surround her so that she can be more easily grabbed and yanked apart. Silver's chains go after Cleo as well when he complies and moves where he should, although he doesn't like this arrangement and directs Sneasel to ice at least one more for the road. One of the (frozen) chains slams into his leg much like a club for his efforts and in a futile attempt to get off some of the ice; it hurts, but it also hits his boot rather than his bare leg, so it shouldn't do more than bruise. Unfortunately, it does also ruin his balance, which means he's less backing up towards Byakuya and more stumbling towards him and trying to use him as support so he doesn't eat shit onto the ground.

Smooth.]

I hope she has a plan.

[Hell knows his uncool ass sure doesn't.]

["Plan" is giving it too much credit.

She retreats, facing the chain monster. And she remembers- When she first woke up with these ice powers, and this new eye, she was so alarmed, she froze her entire apartment... She needs that feeling again. It's true, her ice magic is hard for her to control still. But she doesn't need control right now.

Her visions- Her memory, the memory of another her- flows through her mind. Instructing her in magic. Teaching her- Flexibility. Freedom. Focus on your own image of it.

She lifts a leg high over her head, and then swings it down like an axe kick, heel striking the ground. And from that point of impact, ice forms. Ice. So much ice. It flows forward, rushing forward like an inexorable iceberg, forming around the chains and freezing them in place, until most of the room is simply a glacier with the chains frozen in it.

Of course, having now expended most of her energy, Cleo wobbles, trying to stand steady.]

[Well, that sure was a thing that happened. A very ice way to dispatch the monster! Byakuya stares at it in awe for a moment.]

Incredible... [He'll notice Cleo's wobbling as well and step towards her just as in case she could use some support.] Are you alright?

[And he also glances between Silver and the frozen mass, noticing the gem among the ice.]

I'm glad that the threat is done with. You've done well. But, beyond that... Do either of you have the means to extract that gem from the ice? [They shouldn't leave empty-handed if they could help it!]

[There's a moment's pause out of Silver as he moves to guard himself on reflex. Whether or not he was expecting something sort of like that doesn't change the hint of fear and immediate primal urge to leave the room that courses through him. He's not as brave as the him he's remembering.

But he can shake off the memories that dredges up. Cleo looks worn out. Byakuya is taking care of her. He can fetch something out of this overgrown frozen puddle, no problem. ...Probably.]

Let's make some magic happen, Berry.

[Sneasel nods and goes to retrieve the gem. Silver moves to follow, winces slightly at his leg, wisely decides that he doesn't feel like climbing around and leaves it to the expert. The expert of course isn't having any trouble reaching the raised tendril holding the gem; cutting it free is easy enough, but it takes a short slap fight to actually get the damn thing out of its hands... And it doesn't exactly come out smoothly, with the gem sailing down the ice and flying up in the air. Whoops-]

[Cleo nods to Byakuya in gratitude for his concern.]

I'm all right. It's merely... mental strain.

[In other words: She's exhausted. And that's not something that normally bothers her. Normally, she'd be able to power through that just fine. But this is not a normal day. She's exhausted mentally from her magic, exhausted emotionally from trying to channel those visions, and exhausted physically from trying to stop the hog earlier. Which means... Well.

She doesn't notice when the gem goes flying, only looking up at the noise from the slap fight... Just in time for the gem to nail her right between the eyes.

She isn't sure if she should be indignant or confused.]

Very well. [He acknowledges Cleo's answer with his own nod, though he still stands nearby just in case. Then he looks up in order to behold Silver and his Sneasel doing a Berry good job of freeing the gem.

The gem goes flying before Byakuya can even articulate an attempt to catch it! And then... he looks back at Cleo again as it makes its landing.]

...Ah. [He hopes that won't leave a mark! But before he can say anything further, the area begins shaking and one wall starts to crack.] Wh-what now?!

[He opens his mouth to apologize to Cleo- Sneasel certainly looks concerned on her behalf- but the shaking and sudden crumbling of debris better gets his attention.]

It's just one thing after another...

[And it's time for him to get running to the edges of this round room to look for some sort of way out. They could wrestle their way through hogs, but that... Doesn't seem like the wisest option at the moment.]

[It's just one thing after another.

Cleo grimaces, forcing herself to move. Her body isn't that tired, after all, it's her magic that's exhausted... But she can push through it. Ignore her limits. Move on. Protect the others.

She draws her sword, and hurls a small spear of ice at the pig to get its attention.]

Get moving, you two!

[Byakuya looks around quickly as he tries to assess the situation. The fortress feels like it's falling apart, the boars are on the offensive, and Cleo is already trying to engage them...

While there could be another exit somewhere in the fortress, it's not worth the risk of the place collapsing on them while they search. So he looks back towards the entrance with a thoughtful frown.]

You shouldn't try to take them on by yourself. Let us evade them as one! Come, Silver! [With that, he starts to move back out while debris starts falling!]
