PESGARE

READY: START.

On the morning of the fourth at 9am, you'll find yourself gathering at the beach with several other volunteers. Many of you will find yourself partnered up and with a name in mind, and awaiting in front of you is a small fishing boat equipped to carry your group. A text comes through not long after, Zee's name attached.

All aboard! Welcome, good morning, thanks for coming out. We've got a little journey ahead of us. Hope you like the ocean.

Stepping aboard, you'll notice that the boat is equip with everything you could need for a short trip three hours south of the city: fishing poles, breakfast, life jackets, etc. In addition, you'll find a handful of flares with the Retrospec symbol stamped on them that you may want to take with you. At the end of this trip, you'll find yourself pulling into a harbor of a region known as Pesgare.

Constantly overcast with the threat of rain, Pesgare is a bustling little harborside town with a wide ocean and streams leading fishermen and traders in from all parts of the world. There’s greenery and the scent of salt in the area and it’s a balmy sort of feeling the longer you linger outside.

The region known as Pesgare is filled with cramped quarters and cobblestone-esque roads and it’s hard to tell who is and isn’t from the area. There are multiple languages that can be heard (including some that are absolutely not from this earth) and it’s hard to track all of the activity in the main village. Along the roads are brick buildings and wooden shacks and the general area of the town itself is only about 500 square miles. Most of the area to explore ahead is the ocean itself to other ports and islands around.

Everyone in the town is friendly. Literally everyone. It’s hard to find anyone who isn’t in a jovial mood and who isn’t willing to help a neighbor or a stranger and they will be happy to chat about the places they’ve traveled or the people they’ve met along the way. Several of the stories revolve around travels around the globe from once upon a time, and there are others that speak of worlds far off and strange planets that you may never have heard of. It’s hard to tell if they’re serious stories or not though as the townspeople regale the tales and laugh all the while. It’s hard to go anywhere in the town without someone stopping to offer you a free loaf of bread or rush up to talk about how you remind them of someone. It’s busy, busy, busy. A lot of the places in the area appear to be trade posts for certain specialties. This includes weaponry, types of fish, cured meats and veggies, bakeries, books, equipment, curio wares and more. It’s all about supply and demand and barter and trade here.

It’s not recommended to travel at night, so most out-of-towners are directed to the inn at the top of the hill, The Ontispan. Several stories high and easily the most recognizable building in the port, you will find that it’s near the lighthouse and the owners, an elderly couple, are more than happy to take you in. There’s plenty of room! The lodging is nice and comfortable and the rolling sea outside your window is calming. However, payment must be made in the morning. No problem, right? You must have your wallet on you, mustn’t you? But the amount due is in a currency you do not have. You’ve never even heard of it! How are you supposed to pay for something like this?

It’s all about supply and demand and barter and trade. The boat you came on is nowhere in sight and none of the other fishermen will consider taking you back to the mainland while you're trying to leave without payment.

Looks like you'll just have to work off your debt, now won’t you?

This is the Team One Event Log! You are free to toplevel and thread as you choose on this log, but only team members may utilize this log.

Remember, your activity to qualify for your two free memories and one item is supplying at least 30 comments spread over the three objectives per group (minimum of 5 comments per objective!) with at least three members of your groups. You will not be eligible if you do not participate in all three objectives somehow, and you will not be eligible if you only stick with your preferred partner!

People who are paired with partners will experience some of the following:

-Telepathic connections, but only the thoughts you don’t want your partner to actually hear. You can also use this to influence your partner’s thoughts.
-Color fades when you’re not cooperating, it brightens when you are.
-Cause and effect. If something happens to your partner, you feel it (i.e. if your partner trips somewhere, you’ll feel the effects.)
-Timers. You and your partner will have a countdown embedded somewhere (hand, foot, chest, whatever) and if you don’t complete your missions and see each other before the timer runs out, consequences occur.

These are not required and you may play with these as little or as much as you want!

We certainly do like a lot of things. Primarily...uh, places. Things that are places. Around here. What kind of places do you have around here.

[Howard wishes he could just sink into this cobblestone street, never to be seen again. His cheeks flush, embarrassed by his bad attempt at speaking, before his gaze turns to his shoes.]

[Man, he needs to get new shoes.]

[Shinji gives Howard a brief Look before turning back to their informant.]

My brother's boyfriend isn't good at talking to people, sorry.

["Oh, that's alright." At least the local isn't letting the other adults' awkwardness ruin the conversation. "We have a wonderful bakery, you should stop by at least once before you leave!"]

[ ’my brother’s boyfriend’...

odasaku’s certain that he can hear karma laughing loudly at his ears; even ponting fingers. involuntarily, he feels his face heat up, but makes no attempt at correcting the boy either. it’s not like this is anything important either.

instead he nods, taking out a small notebook and pen from his bag. the bakery... the book store—wait, a book store? now that piques oda’s attention. ]

Book store’s great, actually. How far away is that? [ please keep this man on track ]

[Howard's face instantly flushes - he coughs, shooting a glare down at the boy before turning away. He wants to deny it. God, he does. But they have to lay low or something, and he can't deny it, and now he just has to stand here and just accept that he has to play the part of Oda's boyfriend, now.]

I'm down to go to the bakery after the bookstore. Where is it? I'm starving.

[Says Howard, in the tone of someone who clearly wants this whole thing to be done in two seconds so he can leave this conversation forever.]

[Their informant gives the "sweet young men" directions to both the bookstore and the bakery.]

I guess I'm going with these two. They probably won't let me go somewhere on my own.

[Even though he would be Totally Fine.]

Of course we won't.

[ although a small part of odasaku can't help but wish that they would leave him alone. but he won't.

with a nod, he thanks their informant for the information and begins to make his way to the bookstore. after a few seconds, he turns back to make sure that howard and shinji are following him.

oda won't admit it, but he's a tiny bit excited to see what the bookstore in this place is like. ]

[Honestly, a bakery sounds like the best thing in this place. He gives a curt nod to their informants before following after Oda - a bookstore for some peace and quiet, and possible sweets? It doesn't sound bad at all.]

[But what if the sweets are poisoned by these overly nice people? Howard lifts a hand, gnaws at a nail. Perhaps Oda will suddenly hear the thought being broadcasted over their connection...]

[I'll make Oda try the sweets first at the bakery, just in case...]

I hope we don't have to walk very far.

You've got longer legs than me, you shouldn't be complaining.

[Why is this guy such a weenie, god. Now that he's not trying to charm an adult, Shinji's full brattishness is unleashed.]

[ he's not really listening to shinji's bratty act towards howard because he's too busy wondering why howard was referring to him in third person.

out loud, he answers: ]

I'll try the sweets. I don't mind.

Longer legs doesn't mean more stamina, you know...

[He sighs. He's disliking this child the more time goes on.]

Oh, good. Thanks-

[A pause. He does a doubletake at Oda, eyes widening. Unconsciously, he even takes a step back, away from the other man.]

[What was that? I didn't say anything? I-is my face that easy to read...? Is there even an expression that says "I don't want to try the sweets in case they're poisoned"? What the-?]

When did we even start talking about sweets?

[Shinji, being not a part of this telepathic connection, is very confused. At least confusion takes his attention away from how big a weenie Howard is.

For now.]

You didn't hear him?

[ the fact that howard continues to talk about this is not strange to odasaku. what is strange is the fact that he can hear him talking, but not see his lips move.

not only that, it seems that shinji doesn't know what they're talking about either. but oda...oda can hear him just fine, as if howard was right next to him.

what does this mean? is it some sort of, what, telepathy? is that even real? but then again, lots of things that shouldn't be real are real so... only one way to find out. ]

[ I can hear you just fine. But I don't know why. ]

It's nothing. I-it's nothing.

[Howard doesn't hear Oda whatsoever. Instead, he raises his hand to his face, already starting to chew nervously on the nail of his index finger.]

[What's happening? He's not some kind of mind-reader. That can't be. That's impossible. I mean, actually, that's not really impossible, I suppose...I mean, I've got super hearing now, maybe he's got mind reading abilities?]

Can we just...hurry up and get to the bookstore, already? How far is it? A-are we there yet...?

No, I didn't hear him. Why are you both so weird?

[Small child judges two grown men, news at eleven.]

It's like a block down this way. Kids are the ones who're supposed to go 'are we there yet', sheesh...

Of course you didn't. And don't bully him, we've had a long day.

[ and yet he can STILL hear him like it's clear as day. this is not only worrisome, but a tad annoying. does he have mind reading abilities? fuck if he knows.

this is all my fault. maybe if i had stayed in the city with him this wouldn't be happening...and yet you forced him to come with you. you selfish idiot. ]

We just gotta get to know the town. Once we do we can go back to the inn.

Well, maybe adults can say that too...

[Howard suddenly jerks his head in Oda's direction, hearing thoughts as clear as day that certainly don't belong to him.]

[What? Is that...Oda? Is Oda saying he's a selfish idiot? I-I don't understand. I thought he was the one reading my mind, but maybe I'm reading his? What's going on? Is it this town...?]

Uh. Well. I hope this goes quickly. The town can't be that big, right?

It's bigger than the couch you were gonna stay on forever.

[Shinji has no concept of 'not bullying people', sorry Oda.

He also has no concept of what's making Oda and Howard give each other weird looks, so he doesn't comment on that again. Not until he has something clever to say. Or something he thinks is clever, not always the same thing.]

It'd be strange if the town wasn't bigger than the couch.

[ at this point, oda has decided to put on his best poker face and act like nothing is wrong. it's difficult, considering that there is definitely something that's wrong but...as long as he can't figure it out, there's nothing he can do about it besides maybe tell howard.

with his poker face still on and keeping pace between the boy and howard, he pulls out his phone and searches howard's name on the retrospec app. might as well tell him. ]

I think I can hear your thoughts. Or something.

That couch was worlds better than this town. I'm already missing it...

[The phone grabs his attention - thinking it might be someone he knows, he opens it, and...]

[Wait a second.]

[Howard's face blanches. He quickly glares over at Oda, before tapping away at his phone - he looks like an embarrassed, guilty kid who's been caught with his arm half in the aquarium tank.]

well then stop listening to them!!!

Are you two texting each other from like a foot away?

[Rude! It's so rude to leave him out of the conversation! Shinji's going to try to look over Oda's shoulder at his phone to see what they're texting about.

Way under Oda's shoulder, rather, but same idea.]

No. We're not.

[ and oda will just go and put his phone back in his pocket in one swift motion. he had managed to read most of howard's text, trying to hold back a glum sigh.

as if i could do something as simple as stop listening to someone else's thoughts. ]

We just got texts at similar times, I guess.

Yeah. That. Just...at the same time.

[He also pockets his own phone, glowering at Shinji before just shaking his head. This is...bad. He doesn't want this, he never wanted this. It's just the rotten icing on top of a cake made of trash.]

Can we just...focus on getting where we need to go? Please?

[Adults are dumb. Adults are super dumb, and way whinier than kids, and not at all intimidating even if they are glowering at Shinji.]

I don't believe you, but we're almost there anyway.

[Which is when he'll find a way to ditch these two.]

[ and, just like shinji says, the bookstore comes into view. it's certainly beautiful, and oda can't help but get just a little excited. not much, but it's definitely there. ]

Well, there's the bookstore.

[ he takes a notebook and pencil out of his bag, writing down whatever landmarks he can find around it. he'd love to look through it, but maybe that can wait for another day. another day when he's not being followed by a child and a whiny man. ]

Where else should we go?

Uh. Bakery. I'm feeling a bit peckish.

[He stares, morose, at the storefront. He really wants to go inside but APPARENTLY HE HAS A JOB TO DO. God. This is the worst.]

I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to grab something to eat...
