[ souji hasn't known keigo as long as some of his other friends so he couldn't have expected this kind of response from him, but to see how touched keigo is over a gift like this... it can't help but make souji smile softly and makes him glad that he chose keigo as the recipient of the flowers. ]

Because you're my friend. And I truly do think that you're an amazing person who deserves this.

[ it didn't seem to matter much to keigo how long he knew someone, just that he felt a connection. you could know someone for years and never really know them, was his opinion on the matter. even still, it probably was a little much to be so deeply touched by the gift, but it was a matter that ran deeper than the surface.

people weren't just nice to him like this.

what made it more poignant was how souji spoke with such confidence, as if there really wasn't any other reason. keigo wasn't inclined to believe most people when presented with an unfamiliar situation like this, but that smile souji wore, coupled with the heartfelt response, well... ]

But...

[ ...it sort of pushed keigo over that edge. tears started to well up in his eyes and he sniffled, raising his free hand to his face in an attempt to quickly mask the embarrassing shift in his expression. ]

I'm nothing special! This is too nice! You didn't have to do something like this, y'know!!

[ souji just places a hand on keigo's shoulder and squeezes it. it's not embarrassing at all but very heartwarming to see him reacting like this over just a gift and some compliments. souji keeps in mind to do this more often in the future to boost up keigo's apparently low self-esteem. ]

But I wanted to. Because you're special and you need to start believing that.

[ this was beyond mortifying for someone like keigo. the only people that had really seen him cry with genuine emotion were yosuke and renji, so letting someone new in on something like that was hard to accept. but it was done; there was nothing he could do to reverse it, and with souji gripping his shoulder like that, there was no way he could deny it as reality any longer.

but perhaps the good thing to take away from all of this was that this was what supportive friendship looked like. it wasn't just exclusive to one or two people; keigo was actually capable of making other friends who would care for him just as much.

it was stupid, in hindsight, to get upset over it, and as he held those flowers to his chest and rubbed at his eyes yet again, he couldn't stop himself from laughing. ]
