JANUARY EVENT - PART ONE

I.
It starts in the morning. It starts on the morning of January 5th the moment you step outside and notice that something's not quite right here. It's warm enough to venture into the city without a jacket, and over the course of the day the temperature seems to rise to an almost intense degree. All around you the snow begins to melt, rivers of ice water flowing down the sidewalk and into the streets soaking through your shoes and leaving your socks pretty damp. Gross.
That's not all that seems to be dissolving though. For anyone who ventures over to Tisse near Wiffle-Waffle, you'll find that Santa's Workshop is being dismantled. You may recognize the faces of the construction workers as those of the elves you encountered last month, though they are now full-sized people and don't seem to wish to engage. Walls are torn down, set-pieces are moved away, James' dunktank is emptied and Wiffle-Waffle resumes to its original state. Linger too much, however, and you'll be put to work helping haul away materials and load it into the giant moving truck labeled Sleigh-ers.
Likewise, over in Tribunal Square the members of Re:Va and other volunteer associations are working over the weekend to take down and de-decorate the large Christmas tree to haul away and store the ornaments until next year. You may wish to grab anything that's yours, including the baubles from last month. These volunteers could really use some extra hands, so pitch in and get to work! It's faster and easier with everyone tackling the same goal, after all. As the tree begins to droop under the heat and a shower of pine needles falls over you, the baubles containing your past home worlds will become frozen in place with a scene from the location you visited. Touching these baubles will give you a clear vision of the location and though you may not return yet, a pleasant, warm feeling will settle whenever these memories occur.
But that doesn't seem to solve what, precisely, is causing the insane heatwave taking over the city. The sun sets at its normal winter hours (around 5pm) and yet the temperature remains the same. It's to the point citizens can roam in tank tops and shorts if they wished to, and as the evening drags on the scent of something sweet albeit smoky fills the air. Huh. That's weird...but at 9pm on the fifth, a whoosh of air overtakes the city as bright red and orange colors appear in the distance. Looking around, these colors form a circle around the city and seem to be far off in the distance. If you're feeling rather adventurous, however, it's easy to track down the source of light. Approaching the edges of the city just beyond the districts citizens will come face to face with an earth-to-sky-high wall of flames, gently licking the sides of the buildings, encasing the air before you and slowly closing in.

Well. That's unfortunate. The ring of fire appears endless and spins around you, engulfing the city at a glacial pace. Strangely, however, it seems as though the flames are passing straight over buildings, flora and fauna without actively burning them. The firewall leaves little damage in its path and it's near impossible to notice that the wall begins to inch forward at its crawling pace.
Your first instinct may very well be to call the fire department. It's hard for them not to notice this, isn't it? The fire department's on the case and will rush to the scene of the crime, but...it's everywhere. How can they fight a fire that's everywhere? The flames aren't destroying the city, and firefighters find themselves puzzled as to how the fire can be active without putting anyone at risk. Smoke inhalation is only a risk for those directly up against the fire, and while they'll encourage citizens to step back the flames are too massive for them to combat on their own.
Good thing a mass text is sent to your phone on the morning of the sixth.
Funny, when they called it a firewall I didn't think they meant literally. It's okay! You should be safe as long as you don't stick too close too long. Beyond the wall is the next security measure that needs to be opened; do your best! We're counting on you! - Jo.

Following these directions can lead you to the location of the nearest fire extinguisher, a tower of baking soda boxes, the longest hose available in any particular distance or even a stack of blankets. Work together to guide each other and combat the flames, dear citizens. It seems there's something beyond that's worth investigating.

Despite having the appropriate tools, clearing the flames doesn't appear to be an easy task, now does it? The fire seems to respond best to magic, but the flames can be doused with water, smothered with blankets or even just finding a way to separate the flames will cause the fire to extinguish. Utilizing any methods you have will help though and the further you cut into the firewall, the further back you'll venture in. Creating a tunnel for yourself, the wall expands as it stretches further and further and an inferno expands to give you space to explore. Though the journey is rough and the smoke begins to make your eyes water, inside each man-made tunnel will be a large silver door.
The extra boost in heat-resistance will help you here as the doors would normally be too hot to touch. You can place your hands safely upon them and even take the time to review the carvings engraved on each panel of the door. The scenery reflects locations you may recognize as the locations of the founders' estates you received access to in November and this close you can hear the sound of the wind howling and voices behind the door. Was this what Joanne meant about security measures? There's only one way to find out.
Granted, you may find that your door doesn't open. No matter how hard you push or shove or even try to punch it down, the door will remain locked and a small keyhole glows just enough to grab your attention. Without a key these doors will not budge, but another path of flames opens up for you to follow. Several doors that you come across will provide the same results, though you will find yourself rerouted until you hit a door that's already been opened. Will these doors contain what it is you seek?
The unsealed doors will remain open until two or more people step through the threshold at which time they'll swing closed and glow a golden color instead, indicative of being occupied. The world beyond each door appears different than the last in spite of how many doors you seem to find. Beautiful landscapes, desolate wastelands, and looming planets lurk in these spaces. The path is much less clear now as the space before you stretches for miles past your line of vision. The door behind you closes again, sealing you into this space and immersing you in this pocket dimension for the time being. While each space is different, you'll find that no matter which door you slip through the space around you shimmers and warps, reaching directly to your presence. Sinkholes appear beneath your feet. Clouds of dust loom over you. The pull of gravity gives out and in some cases these pockets send you somewhere with its own set of rules. You may find yourself wandering for some time, unsure of a clear path, but don't fret. It's only a matter of time before the sound of barking fills the air, and you come across one of ten creatures, all wearing collars.
Don't linger for too long though. They're impatient little things, and they will immediately grab whoever's nearby to begin dragging them along. Good luck getting them to release your pants from their jaws.

The dogs (and cheetah) are very excited to see you and will immediately begin leading you onward on a mission. These creatures aren't what they seem at first sight, and as you delve deeper into the closed off areas, they will use their specific skillsets to help you.
The cheetah is quick and she will be a good battle ally, charging in to destroy all foes. The chihuahua sports a tiny bowler hat but when pet in the right fashion, he will grow to be about 50 times its size. The german shepherd's eyes will glow like headlights and he can light up even the most darkened caverns. While the husky is only good for puzzle-solving, she's a clever girl and may help locate hidden items or crack codes. The bloodhound will pinpoint items buried in the dirt and he'll dig as far as the eye can see. The great dane is protective and if she senses danger she will bark and bark until she spits out fireballs. If told to speak, the dalmatian will open his mouth and spit out a hydrojet of water. The golden retriever will be able to knock out walls and he can deliver physical blows, the pomeranian (with a tophat) is small enough he can slip through small crevices and cracks, and the shiba inu has the ability to teleport ten feet ahead and search for hidden objects, and he has the ability to sense out wrong paths.
These creatures are used to search and rescue missions by now and will help all Retrospec users navigate the areas around them searching for hidden keys. These keys will be used to unlock the doors you've previously encountered, but for every door that becomes unlocked more keys appear inside.
Even with the animals helping out with these missions, combating monsters and helping you find the right paths, the keys themselves will not be easy to obtain. Sprouting silver wings or little feet, the keys will send users on a wild goosechase through the area. It will take some clever thinking (or brute force) to catch the keys and take them back, but upon holding them in your hands a thin, silver-esque substance will begin to spread over any expanse of exposed skin. The longer you take to get back and find the exit to unlock another door, the harder it will become to move the parts of your body coated in metal. For the truly unlucky, this may even mean becoming a living statue, stuck in these portals until someone can figure out a way to either pick you up and bring you back or break the key curse itself.
How does one break the curse though? Your four-legged friends seem to have the answer as they will disappear and return with a note tied to their collars, elegant handwriting bearing instructions.
The key to unlocking is unlocking the key.
Very specific, isn't it. If users appear stumped, the creatures will begin to bark (or meow, in the cheetah's case), waiting for users to understand the clue. It seems that something in particular must be said to the silver-bearing user to shed their second skin, and with some trial and error users will discover any use of the word "understand" does the trick. "I understand where you're coming from." "I don't understand you." "I wish you understood more." A conversation of enlightenment provides an answer, but it will only work with the right questions.

[ He has already stripped down to jeans and an undershirt, and even that he can feel himself sweating through. Gross. Being a sweaty adult is GROSS!!!
But more importantly, the city is being engulfed in fire. And, as James realizes the fire is encircling the city and gradually getting tighter, he races towards Peach Beach and Fort McCoy, which, further in the outskirts of the city, are the ones getting hit with the fire soonest. And even if it's not technically causing damage, he doesn't like to see the base he called home for three years up in flames.
He shows up armed with a couple of fire extinguishers, but the fire is still behind the security checkpoint. No way to fight it directly unless you're military personnel who can get inside the base. James would have to fight it from a distance. ]

[ He doesn't know if anyone's listening, so as he shouts, he also starts ransacking people's yards for one. Here's hoping this weird sweaty hobo doesn't upend your property too much. ]

[Today has been a weird day from the moment he woke up.
First off, he woke up with different eyes than he went to sleep with – they're now a pale lavender color instead of the brown he was used to. And there's a bit of panic that sets in with that, but for now, he elects to just hide them behind his glasses. The contacts can wait until he's a little less freaked out by his own eyes.
Secondly, he got dragged into helping volunteer to take down the Christmas displays. That he got roped into helping isn't weird at all, that's pretty much par for the course in Rean's life, but what is weird is that it's so hot. He'd expect to work up a sweat doing physical labor, but nothing quite like this...
By the time the sun's starting to go down, he's wiping sweat from his brow and the heat and humidity have done away with any styling work he did to his hair this morning. His hair, now back to its natural straightness, doesn't look bad or anything, but it sure as hell is leaving him with a lot more hair in his eyes than he's used to. Great.]
...I'm just glad we're finally wrapping up. I don't think I've ever felt it this hot in January before...

[With volunteer work out of the way, Rean heads home and gets himself cleaned up before heading back out. He doesn't even bother to re-style his hair or anything – until this heatwave is dealt with, looks like Rean's going au naturel.
He doesn't really have any plans for wandering out and about, but heat rises and his building doesn't have air conditioning, so it's better to be outside where at least there might be some night breeze to cool him down.
And so he goes, minding his own business until there's a sudden woosh of hot air, and then bright red and orange in the distance.]

[Rean doesn't even think twice before picking up his pace, making his way toward the edge of the city to find the cause of this. He'll stop if called, though. And he might not be paying the closest attention to where he's going, so he might also just run directly into someone.

[So, the whole edge of the city's on fire. That's awesome. Rean is trying to make sense of what to do about this, and for now, that just means grabbing some iced coffee from a local coffee shop and even trying to wake up. [Being a member of ReVa, it's no surprise that he's out there helping with taking down the decorations. It's always a little sad to see the physical signs that Christmas is over, but you have to move on. He managed to find the decoration that took him to Thors, taking a moment to smile at it before he carefully puts it in his bag.
Though like everyone else, Elliot can't help but notice the heat. As the day goes on, he finds himself losing layers until he's down to a t-shirt and still sweating like crazy. He's not really good at handling extreme temperatures, so you might catch him whining at some points]

II-A: Those aren't the Northern Lights
[It's evening time and he's finally off from his ReVA duties. He's outside, not wanting to deal with what the temp must feel like inside buildings still running their heating systems. He's got his violin with him, maybe with so many people outside, it'd be a good night to play.
Then, his nose picks up on the smokey smell.
He freezes in his spot. He knows that smell very well, having it been seared into his memories. Anxiety knots up in his chest, but he tries to reassure himself. Maybe someone's just having a barbecue. It'd be a good night for one. That's normal. People have those.
But no matter where he looks, he can't find this so-called barbecue. In fact, the smell keeps hanging in the air no matter which direction he moves in. He's trying not to panic, it might still be nothing, but he's definitely getting more anxious the longer he looks.
When 9pm hits with the whoosh of air and the distance horizon starts glowing with red and orange? The reality dawns on him. The heat, the smell, the way the wind is moving. Fire.
Any chance of remaining calm leaves as he starts to scream. ]
III (and IV): Get the Water Mage to the Fire: CHALLENGE MODE
[So it's not secret that Elliot is a water mage that can pack quite a punch. He'd be really useful to have combating the flames.
The problem? You're going to have to convince Elliot to go near the flames, and keep him from panicking while he's there. And if you want to convince him to go through the firey inferno paths....well, good luck to you.
He most commonly can be found at his home, or at school. He looks like a downright mess: shaking, pale, a complete lack of appetite, regularly on the verge of tears. And when he's not being oddly quiet, you might catch him quietly berating himself for being so afraid. Maybe you'll catch him muttering about him being pathetic, or useless. Not only will it take some work to convince him to go, but it'll also take to minding to make sure he stays in the right mindset to be of any use against those fires.

In fact, it seems like you're in the ruins of a city perched high in the sky, a strange mix of ancient, moss-riddled architecture and glass pathways, lush plants and floating platforms. The whole area seems to be one ascending, mountainous climb, reaching higher and higher through dark pathways and honeycombs, disappearing into the clouds above. No doubt there are various monsters and robots lurking about, ready to engage in battle and prevent you from going any further to find the key.
... of course, if the creatures don't get you, the crumbling foundations beneath your feet might do the job instead, so if you don't want to go tumbling thousands of feet to the ground, you might want to get going... and go fast.

Crow's been attempting to rally citizens to head towards the city's center, and getting closer to the flames as much as he can.
That's when he happens upon Xiaolang, who he only really recognizes from the profile icon on Retrospec. The boy had just finished up that last water spell, which was an impressive feat in itself that Crow'll have to comment to him later on, but he sees those flames getting a little too close for comfort for the boy.
Wrapping an arm around him, he holds out one of his pistols as an icy blue, frigid ball of energy forms just where the bullet would come out of, aiming and firing it right at the fire.
Which the fire seems to rightfully hate, jumping back a little to give them breathing room.
...the only downside is a snowball comes out of nowhere and hits Crow in the face. Something he's already too used to as he wipes it off his face.]

Togusa and Malik: CW for violence and blood eventually
When the first tunnel appears, it catches all of Togusa's attention. "What the-" It's as if the fire is opening itself up for him. He eyes the tunnel again and again, and realizes no one else is reacting to it.
A quick radio back, and Togusa gets leave to investigate it. Told his superiors there was a possible civilian, the response was to proceed with caution, they can't spare anyone to go with him.
The tunnel is sweltering already, and the somewhat familiar doors don't set Togusa at ease. He approaches the already open one with caution, one hand creeping behind him for the revolver holstered at the small of his back.
What he wasn't expecting was a german shepherd trotting up to him and looking at him expectantly.
Togusa steps inside the door, and relaxes, wondering if maybe this wasn't one of the K-9s that wandered away?
"Hey, buddy. How are you doing, come here?" He kneels down and tries to hold out his hand for the dog. He is completely not noticing anyone else coming up on him.

[Despite Crow's capitalistic mindset of doing odd jobs for money, he sure was one of the first in line to help take down decorations for Christmas. Call it an itch to get his body moving, or 'a good deed', but Crow's in pretty high spirits as he helps remove all the festive decorations.

[And thanks to the little extra dose of fire protection, Crow can find himself breathing easier when close to that flame. OK, time to get to work.
While still being only a trainee EMT, Crow's been gathering people scrambling to get away from the fire. The fire department's been fighting this thing on all directions, and Crow's not seeing an area where the sky was dark blue in any 360 degree turn.
His demeanor's completely changed from the Crow you might know: gone is the silly, joker-esque personality and replaced with one much more grave and serious, giving civilians advice to head towards the city's center and forming groups for them to go in to avoid less stragglers.
As for himself, he wasn't trained to put out fires, so he'll stay far enough back to let the professionals do their job.
Even if he is hearing his cousin's voice in his head: "Shoot it."
That's...really stupid, though, isn't it?]
Shooting bullets at a fire...I really AM going crazy.

He just happens to be in the area when he sees Rinka pacing around. Ever attentive to other people that seem to be having problems, he immediately zeroes in on her and approaches.
Rean looks a little different from the last time Rinka saw him. Most notably, he's wearing glasses. If she looks beyond those, though, she'll notice that his eyes are not the brown she might remember, but instead a pale lavender color. Retrospec nonsense, yay! Still, he raises a hand in greeting as he walks over, calling out to her.

The open door was suspicious, but between an immediate threat and a suggestion of a maybe-one in the future, Lucy knew what she'd choose. She nodded at Pen.
"Yeah. Only other way is back now," she said, stepping forwards into the doorway.
And it was dark. No--not quite. Light filtered poorly through the smog and looming, sulking buildings overhead. Nearby windows were much more clear, spilling illumination onto the street, but that did little to puncture the atmosphere of gloom. Lucy stepped forwards cautiously, leaving the sting of smoke and odd flames behind her.

Only to find the source. And that this was a Very Bad Idea, considering his past. Both in his memories of that other Japan, and his life here, regarding the fire at his home years ago. The fire that, here, led to his parents being killed as a result, while he was saved. He was also saved by someone in his memories of that other life, though that fire was set deliberately in his parents attempt to kill him. As a result, he doesn't take too well to being confronted with this literal wall of fire.
Yuu immediately pales, stumbling back fast enough that he trips in his haste to get distance between himself and the flames, the heat. He falls on his ass as he panics and ties to flee as fast as he can.]

[She may not have her cards back yet. But Sakura could at least help in terms of using things such as a fire extinguisher or hose. Which...still puts her pretty close to the fire in dealing with that heat and smoke, but she still wants to try and help.
This may lead to her to possibly overdo it some without initially realizing. Which leads to Sakura tiring sooner than she figures because of the heat, and trying and failing to suppress the coughing from the smoke as she tries to help put the fire out, at least trying to help.]

[She can't help but to be curious about this. The door, the landscapes she sees. Though, given this is Sakura, it's easy enough to distract her when the dogs appear, of course. She naturally, doesn't immediately clue in to the dogs trying to help, or how important they might be. She just thinks they are cute and immediately thinks to Xiaolang's dogs at his apartment with Leon and Li-Na. So of course she is wanting to pet it and make sure the dog is alright.
Which is how the dog nips at her sleeve of her shirt to try lead her along.]

[The great dane is a help, considering Sakura has no cards to use with her newly regained magic ability. As such, she is basically relying on the dog and how protective it is. And the support of whoever else she might be with at the time.
She chases after the keys, trying to grab it even if it might be something of a challenge considering it can move on its own with the feet. Sakura pounces, lunging and reaching after a few unsuccessful attempts.]

Okay, cool. Holidays are over. Time for Anna's head to get back in the right fucking place. It takes her a second to realize she's not being swept up anywhere. There's a brief vacant look on her face and a smile just barely reaches her eyes, and unfortunately that means that she trips and very nearly eats all of the shit on the rapidly-evaporating snow. Her hand reaches out and breaks her fall, but the box of decorations takes a spill, tinsel and garlands and plastic ornaments scattering in front of her.

[It takes Freya a minute to catch up, a closed 10-gallon bucket dangling from one hand and three fire extinguishers under the other arm. She looks a little like hell, face and uniform dirtied from her frequent close proximity to the smoke.]

[Freya almost panicked for an instant; she'd thrown them at the door at the end of the short, smokey tunnel, and if it weren't for the sudden lack of roaring heat, she'd have thought she'd gone blind. It might've well been total darkness, as adjusted to too bright as her eyes were. The sudden silence was just as overwhelming as the lack of light and heat. Still, she could feel Lucy in her grasp, and the air she breathed cool and damp and distinctly not smoke.]
You alright? [Freya's voice croaked, hoarse from constantly lingering around the fire.]

It was nice to see that Freya didn't have any missing limbs or third degree burns, at least, though Lucy's concerned mood turned grumpier the more mud and ash got stuck to her clothes and skin.
When her roommate had grabbed onto her, though, Lucy had at once tensed and let go of the hose in protest. It didn't matter much. The flames got close enough to touch, and Lucy shouted despite herself--but the fire didn't burn, and then they were through. Through...what?]
