WHO: James Barnes and YOU!
WHERE: the prison
WHEN: November 1st through November 15th
WHAT: visiting James in prison!
WARNINGS: general prison visit stuff
[ This month, when sitting down to a visit with James Barnes, people may notice something about him feels off. Earlier in the month, he may just seem restless--his feet tapping furiously against the floor as he sits in the visitation room, or deeply inspecting every groove and crease of his metal hand. Some days, he may look like he's seen a ghost--literally.
But as the month wears on, he'll become moodier. Maybe he's frowning and hunched over in his seat. Maybe he's distractedly looking out the window with his jaw set. Whatever it is, he doesn't seem nearly as relaxed as he has the past few months since turning himself in. ]

Nov 1
James.
So here she is James, plonking down a large pumpkin spice latte and a small box containing a 6" round cake. It's vanilla, made of four 1/2" layers, with sweet cream and fresh strawberry layers in between, topped with a light vanilla whipped icing. All topped with sliced, fresh strawberries. Hope you aren't allergic to strawberries, James. About half of it is already missing, as she might have bribed a guard or two to let her bring the food in... but hey, that's still half a cake more than he had this morning!]
I see you managed to not escape.
no subject
I guess I'm just really good at getting in and staying in trouble.
What's all this about?
[ He gestures to the cake and drink. ]
no subject
You can't even stay out of trouble in prison. That takes effort.
[Li-Na leans her elbows on the table]
Well. Back in February I told Zee I'd make him a pumpkin spice latte. And a birthday cake, though I didn't tell him about the cake part. And yesterday was his birthday.
[she rests her chin on the heels of her hands]
I just... wanted to celebrate his birthday for him. Is that silly?
no subject
[ James reexamines the cake and the drink in a different light now. He doesn't know how to feel about this. Guilty? But he didn't kill Zee. Appreciative? He wasn't exactly close to him either. If nothing else, it feels significant. ]
...Nah. It's not. People have celebrated the dead in weirder ways. Why here, though? With me?
no subject
He was nice and sent the cake since Futaba and I have birthdays really close. So I asked him when his was.
[and that's how she got on Zee's favorites list]
You're willing to do the time for his murder. Even though he'd probably like his actual killer caught, I think Zee would appreciate that you tried to give people some sort of closure on what happened.
[not... what happened... but... hey, assumptions]
And it's just... it's kind of weird in the city right now. There's altars everywhere, with our pictures. Like the one I have at home for my parents. But we're not dead.
no subject
Altars, huh? ...Is there one for Zee?
no subject
I don't know. I haven't seen one yet, but I've mostly just looked for it around Tisse and Apprassage. It could be in one of the other districts.
[She's going to find it though.]

November 11th
Even if he doesn't agree with James being behind bars for the next fifteen years, he doesn't see the point in arguing further. Especially on their shared birthdays! So here he is, ready to greet James with a smile and wave.]
Yo! Happy birthday man! Turns out they're not fans of birthday candles, but here's a real slice for ya!
no subject
What is this, are you throwing me a birthday pizza party? In prison? Kurt, what the hell.
no subject
no subject
Double birthday? Who else's birthday is it supposed to be today?
no subject
Why don't you give it a good guess!
no subject
[ THEY COULD'VE PAINTED THE TOWN RED
or, well, in Kurt's case, blue. ]

after the 6th
god, is she a little flashy. looks like she went on a major shopping spree to boot. not throwing away a t-shirt that’s eren’s trademark.
the ghost of a young girl who never had a chance to live more would love to be in a rich young man’s shoes, looks like. so she comes in to sit, name tag and all (it still reads “eren jaeger”), and she sets a neatly packed paper bag in front of james.
“what’s with that look?” she says, getting herself comfortable in her seat and honestly, honestly acting like this was any old visit. acting like james should know her. she’ll blink and click her tongue. “don’t tell me you’re surprised.” ]
no subject
Something is up here and he can't even begin to guess at what. He leans back, his finger conspiratorially on his chin. ]
What's this now? Is something new happening that I didn't get the memo on?
no subject
“a lot of ghosts are popping back up into the city, they’re all over the place! i’m surprised there aren’t any here—”
another scream outside, louder this time.
“—or maybe there are.” that isn’t important, though, and she shrugs nonchalantly, pushing his box over to him. ”that’s mom’s pumkpin pie, by the way. you’re welcome.” ]
no subject
And at the same time, he's trying to focus on whatever the girl is saying. ]
Yeah, ghosts...I've seen a couple of them here.
[ And talked to a bunch of them, but that's not important right now. He peers into the box, looking suspiciously at the pie. ]
What are you trying to do here, exactly?
no subject
“you’re pretty shitty if you’re playing this game with me, james.”
but what happens next gets her to jolt in her seat as the yell echoes inside the room. eren, the real eren, doesn’t need to say anything for her to mutter a rushed shit and bolt for the exit. or at least fast walk to it.
at least she left the keys behind in the rush, to which eren snatches back, but leaving james here to go after her? he could only frown and sit back in the seat. ]
That . . . [ he wants to say bitch, but with the word at the tip of his tongue— he can’t blame the dead wanting to be alive. succeeding with his life was just. augh. he pinches the bridge of his nose and takes a breath. ] Sorry.

But this time here was here for a reason. He wanted to give him some sound advice, share with James some of the memories he had been getting. But first, an apology was due.]
First, I do believe I owe you an apology. Sorry about last month and turning you into a ghost. Last month was... very emotionally challenging for me.
no subject
[ He's well aware that infecting was some kind of weird impulse people couldn't control. Which still sucks for whoever got infected, but James really doesn't think he can blame someone for it, especially now that it's over and done with. ]
no subject
At least I was upfront about it eh? I went all out.
[He shifts in his seat a bit.]
Other than being infected, how's it been?
no subject
Weird. As usual. There's ghosts all over the place. Or at least I think that's what they are--they just pass through the cells and the walls like it's nothing. And they all seem...old-timey.
no subject
Yeah, I've noticed that too. But anyway, why I really came here, you besides to see your face.
[Derek lean against the back of his chair and folds his arms.]
Have you decided whether or not to appeal your case to the court?
no subject
[ He says it like it's the most obvious thing in the world. ]
