WHERE: At Noct's penthouse and around town
WHEN: March 13th
WHAT: Boring, mundane shit but plenty of catching up
WARNINGS: none
[ Truthfully, it hasn't been particularly bad. But it hasn't been as if they were kids again either. At least not lately.
Noctis isn't used to living with someone else, at least not since he'd moved here to Recolle. It's been years since Noctis and Ignis had spent an excessive amount of time together, so it should be like old times, right? But it's somehow been different because of Ignis' place in all of this; a caretaker. A nurse. While Noctis hasn't been ornery or stubborn, he hasn't been the most upbeat about this either. Mostly awkward, because... Well... He's still adjusting his pride here.
At the very least, he hasn't been standoffish with Ignis. Nor distant.
By now, it's been a couple weeks since Ignis moved in. His room is set up, the kitchen is full of food for the both of them, and Noctis hasn't eaten out in weeks. Having Ignis around means that his privacy is a bit minimized here, but he's by no means without it. But he certainly hasn't gotten away with the same habits he'd maintained before. Not anymore. He's on a diet, he's on a schedule again, and worst of all? He's back on dozens of medications that Ignis maintains. It's right back to where he'd been as a child, but at least he can come and go out of the apartment.
It's morning, and Noctis had promised the night before that he would accompany Ignis to run errands for much-needed amenities and supplies for the apartment. He's got an alarm; multiple set, actually, and the first two he'd turned off in his sleep.
By the time the third one is going, Noctis is sleeping right through it. Snoring away. It's blaring loud, enough for Ignis to likely hear in the next room.
Guess who's gonna need to be reminded of his promise. ]

He knows exactly what he means, and he doesn't know if he's been waiting for this conversation or he sort of hoped it'd never come up. He falls silent for a moment, licking his lips as he settles his cup onto the counter.]
Rather strange question to ask.
[His fingers tap against the cup as he stares down at it..]
I thought it was nothing. Simply dreams. [Something about a pastry. Surely, it was just an old memory of something his uncle used to make that he forgot. Then there was Noctis, meeting him as a child, except it wasn't at all how they met and that was what he thought would be the stranger one to explain. Yet still, it was certainly only a dream. They were all just dreams.]
Before I met Prompto... I already knew what he looked like. And I couldn't understand why. Why it was the four of us-- yourself and I, Prompto and Gladiolus. Like...
[Like it wasn't just some strange dream, some hallucination, something brought about by coincidence, deja-vu as Noctis calls it.
"Unfamiliar memory". That's it. It was like a memory. Like recalling something that had actually happened before. But it doesn't make sense. He'd never met Prompto or Gladio before, he hadn't seen Noctis in years. He doesn't know where the restaurant even came from.]
I don't know how to explain it.
no subject
He looks down at his cup of coffee, mulling over the words. He hangs on every aspect about Prompto and Gladio, getting further confirmation of them having been that group back in Eos. Noctis suddenly finds himself capable of finding clarity in the memory of Deadeye.
The two others, the ones besides Prompto who's faces were blurred out and voices were distant become clear. Ignis and Gladio had fought beside him, too. They were a part of the royal procession that coasted through this war. It brings on so many more questions.
Well, he did this with Gladio. Might as well... ]
That's... Part of the whole "Retrospec" experience. Some sort of reflection of alternate or past lives or... Something.
You, me, Prompto, Gladio, Ardyn...
We all had this experience on a planet called Eos. When I saw you had the app, I knew I'd have to explain something about it all to you, just didn't think you'd be involved in what the rest of us were seeing.
Figured that was wrong this morning. I saw you at this camp sight we were staying at.
[ He pauses. ]
What did you see?
no subject
Ignis stays silent, his eyes narrowing in further confusion as Noct brings up one of his own memories, something about the two of them spending time at a camp. They'd never done such a thing during Noct's childhood. He was lucky to ever be allowed outside the estate. One of the few times he'd been allowed out was on a visit to the park with himself and his mother.
This is insane, he wants to say, but instead Ignis chews at his lip and returns his attention back to his coffee.]
I wouldn't say there was anything of significance. Nothing very out of the ordinary, simply the four of us eating at what appeared to be a diner. [There is a flicker of what's almost amusement on his face.]
You were very averse to eating your greens. Gladio and I had an argument over it. It felt, very natural. Like it was a common occurrence. The four of us together.
no subject
Noctis wears a cool expression for the time being, uncomfortable as this all makes him. He sighs as he leans back against the booth. ]
We traveled as a group, the four of us.
[ And since Ignis is about to get plenty more memories as time goes on, he may as well add context. ]
From what Prompto and I have gathered, we were on our way to this other country. Altissia. Neither of us know what was there, but it was in the middle of a war. So we were armed.
[ His eyes flit back to Ignis. ]
With weapons and magic.
no subject
He lifts his gaze and just looks at Noctis like he's grown two extra heads.]
Please repeat that last part.
no subject
The other me had these weird, almost paranormal sort of abilities? I could warp through walls and pull weapons out of thin air.
You, Prompto, and Gladio could borrow some of those abilities from me.
[ He reaches back, rubbing the back of his neck. ]
I uh.
I have those abilities now.
no subject
He doesn't want to believe it but suddenly, an off-hand comment from Prompto sticks in his mind, right at this moment.]
I thought it was a joke. [He murmurs under his breath.]
Prompto mentioned something about "warping".
[And then he just sort of. Breaks. Ignis removes his glasses and pinches at the bridge of his nose, rubs between his eyes.]
This is bloody well fantastic, isn't it? Christ...
no subject
Of course he did.
[ Probably slipped by mistake. Oh well. ]
Wish I were joking, but... That's not it.
[ He's just going to get this out of the way now. He'll let Ignis recover later. ]
That world was messed up. Bad. Don't exactly know the entire story or cause, but the war was between a country we supposedly lived in and another with... What's called Magitek technology. Robot armies that basically took over countries while trying to take over "ours". Partly over some giant rock with ethereal powers or something...
[ He stresses that word because the ownership is arguable to him. Noctis starts to feel sick just thinking about where he has to let this go. He's not looking at Ignis when he goes further. ]
The name of the country was... Lucis.
no subject
Ignis needs to take off his glasses and rub his temples. He just needs to breathe, needs to ease away the ache already developing under his skull.
Stupid. It's stupid. It's in books, in old folklore, purely make believe, some low budget money-grabbing television series or even a movie. This isn't their lives.
He takes a deep breath, runs a hand through his hair and replaces his glasses.]
And I'm supposed to simply believe this. All of this. Just like that? Is that how this works?
You mean Final Fantasy, Ignis?
Noctis leans back in his seat again, looking away a moment. ]
Most people with the app do.
Trust me, I’ve been refusing to swallow being a king since it was shoved in my head.
[ There. Announce it casually. ]
But the powers are real. Can’t do it here, but I can prove it.
he wouldn't know because he's NOT A NERD LIKE YOU, NOCT
Wait, you--? [His eyes narrow, he shakes his head in utter denial before he leans in closer to whisper harshly.] Noctis, you can't simply state these things so dismissively. You just said that... you're a king. A king. You.
[Noct, Noct please. This is going too far. The only king last in existence was King George the VI and he's very much dead. Last he knew, Noct wasn't part of the British royal family. Unless there's something he wasn't told about or clearly missed at some point.]
LEARN YOUR FUCKING HERITAGE
It makes him uncomfortable, honestly. Prompto is so stoked about it, and Noctis entertains the little "your Majesty's" that Prompto drops to be cute. But there's a line, and talking about him actually being royalty beyond the little quips? That crosses it.
Noctis shifts his glance back to Ignis quick. His voice is soft, but firm. ]
Him.
[ He softly shakes his head and lets his gaze flit back down. ]
I'm not king of anything. Based on the memories I've gotten, neither was he. Don't read too much into it, Ignis, there's not a drop of royal blood in me.
NO NEVER HE WANTS TO STAY A NORMIE
And Ignis doesn't know what to believe anymore. But if this is something Noct would prefer not to pay any attention to, Ignis honestly has no problem with it, as much as a clear state of denial as it is.
So he relaxes, slightly, replacing his glasses and taking a rather long sip of his coffee to steady his nerves and get him back to sorts. With a hard swallow, Ignis sits himself more comfortably in the booth.]
I clearly know far less than you, so whatever you wish to accept... I won't choose to debate.
[There's still the matter of magic. Ignis looks at Noct very dubiously.]
Are you sure it's safe to prove these... powers, of yours? This "warping" or what have you.
HEY SO DOES NOCT BUT WE CANT ALWAYS GET WHAT WE WANT HUH
Noctis is relieved that Ignis doesn't press further, and instead shifts to a subject he at least isn't uncomfortable discussing. As far as he's concerned, Retrospec is giving him these abilities and he sees it purely as borrowing. Seems this King did that plenty. ]
I used to puke every time I would warp, but that stopped a while ago. Sometimes, calling weapons takes a second.
Even if the normal civilians without the app ignore the stuff that goes on here, I avoid doing it in public. I'll show you at home.
REEEEEE
I'd assume that the first incident of vomiting would be enough proof not to continue doing it...
[Even if it doesn't seem to be an issue any longer, and Noctis isn't going about warping and summoning weapons all over the place all willy-nilly.]
Are you sure it isn't a danger to you physically? Have your doctors noted any changes? [Ignis stresses this greatly, not just because he's still very much wary about these abilities that Noctis has and the fact that he's very sure this is not safe, but of course, he's genuinely concerned here. He has enough issues with his health as it is.]
no subject
Uh, it would've been if it weren't just happening on it's own at first.
[ i.e. Warping through his bed in the middle of the night when he fell asleep with his phone in his hand and dropped it. Or when he tossed his garbage away and warped directly into his trash can. And then the dumpster when he tried to manage control over it.
He's warped into trash a lot.
Noctis takes another sip of his coffee; talking about this at least, hasn't bothered him much. ]
I don't think it's caused any new problems. Not since the problems stopped at least.
[ He scratches the side of his cheek, looking away. ]
Haven't exactly told the doctors, if I'm being honest...
no subject
Well, I suppose I can't be entirely displeased with you. I can't imagine they'd take the essential ability to teleport very seriously.
[God what even is happening anymore?]
no subject
It’s helped. I’ve actualy got some pretty sick fighting skills now.
[ He gestures at Ignis with the coffee cup in his hand, speaking just before he sips. ]
Hell, I bet you’ll get some. Prompto did.
no subject
I'm... unsure if I want to know the details. [Fighting skills? Hand to hand fighting, or weapons? Why would he even need any of that? Prompto as well? Ignis gives a bit of a miserable sip of his coffee. He's barely able to enjoy it now.]
"Fighting skills..." granted I enjoy a good morning run every now and again but I haven't been athletic since those fencing courses. [Ignis has the advantage of being tall so he looks as if he's fit, but he's always thought of himself as lacking a lot of muscle. Not scrawny to the degree of Noct and Prompto but he's not anything impressive.] I picked up a bit of yoga in college but that's about it.
no subject
I totally forgot you fenced.
[ He remembers when Ignis started. Noctis has been taken along to a few of his practice classes. His posture loosens a bit. ]
I tried getting into it and busted my ankle the first day. Shattered like glass.
No, I’m not kidding. I’ve gotten memories of us fighting gigantic monsters. We killed a huge dog-beast-thing with weapons. You were there.
no subject
[He'd forgotten Noct's participation as well, it'd been so long, but he's now recalling that particular injury. Poor Noct was put into a cast and he'd been so miserable for weeks. Ignis and his mother had to make more frequent trips to care for him while he recovered.
It's a very nice distraction from all this talk about fighting and killing things and-- oh. Oh no he didn't want to hear that. Ignis groans as he covers his brow with a hand, he can't believe this. This is absolutely not the sort of life he wants.]
Oh God we killed something. [Granted it's not a person. That's good. But aside from spiders and roaches and the occasional pesky household cricket Ignis has never killed anything in his life, let alone some.... beast.
Okay, he's taking a longer sip of his coffee.
Actually he's going to down the entire remainder of the thing. He needs it. At least their conversation has been going on long enough that it's no longer piping hot.]
no subject
If it makes you feel any better, I separate it as an alternate thing. You haven’t done anything specifically there.
But I guess it’s sort of badass.
The fighting skills come in handy here sometimes.
