dreadful women - march adventure
WHO: Dreadful Women's Adventure Club
WHERE:Deadeye Shooting Range
WHEN:3/10
WHAT:The first meeting — Women can sign up here!
WARNINGS:guns, i guess? also probably swearing but...

Today is the first day for the Dreadful Women's Adventure Club. If you're attending this event, you've gotten a personal invite from Elizabeth or found a flyer around the city. This is open to women over the age of 20 to join in! Each month, the location will change... this month the "adventure" will be a small private gathering at the Deadeye Shooting Range.
There will be a plethora of open space available in the indoor shooting range which focuses primarily on smaller pistols and automatic guns. There are mobile targets in the form of these guys and stationary targets for distance shooting.
Outside the building in the back is a large expanse of land for rifles. You'll be able to rent equipment here as well.
The main take away is there is a trained instructor offering help on handling your weapon! Maybe you're not so good at aiming? There's an incentive prize for having the highest score on the range — a trophy and $100 gift card to A Good Bean.
In the back there's a small gathering of food and drink available. This is for socializing further. White wine, red wine, and juice is an option for our members under 21. There will be no drunk girls with guns though, this is strictly casual. One important thing to note is that the TV on the screen is focusing on recaps of the Founder's Day situation — will you relive your horror of being tangled up in thread or see those bright yellow giant birds?

but she craved more. she felt wanderlust in her bones. the need for the release of adrenaline. it was an obsession she'd had since she was young — like it was genetic. on a whim, she decided to come to the meeting today.
she'd been around guns her whole life. her father and her father's father had been in the military, like most men had been in their time, and had several guns of various countries of origin collected. she had never shot one, though. her father would never teach her. he had wanted to keep her feminine, had wanted to ensure she was safe enough under his care that she wouldn't have to learn.
and truthfully, she was always a little scared of guns. it had been several years, but the memory of her father shooting down a coyote that had assailed her was still fresh on her mind. she still remembered watching the life leave its fierce eyes. she knew knowing her way around a gun would be an awesome power.. so she decided it was time.
she walks to the gun stand and brushes her hand across a pistol. a glock. the design wasn't very intimidating, being made of plastic and all, so she decided to pick it up. ]

Elizabeth's been zipping around, helping the person in charge of monitoring their group since the whole building is rented out for the day. It's not until she spots Dolly that she gives a wave and appreciative look on her face. ]
Goodness, at least those flyers did some use! Didn't think I'd see much of anyone from the college here, but look at that. [ Her voice husky, a bit more pleased than she'd ever admit. She spots the gun that Dolly was eyeing and notes it's a rather safe option. ] Oh — settled on that one, huh? It's a nice model, not too much kickback compared to a desert eagle but ... I'm not paying extra to rent those out for this. Have you been here before?

[ she hadn't looked at the flyers too long, so if elizabeth's name had been on them, she'd probably missed it. just enough to jot down the necessary information. but elizabeth being here made sense. she had the looks of a daring woman — she looked edgy and confident in a way dolly had only encountered in the big city. no one looked like her back home. that made her sort of fascinating, in an intimidating way, but she respected her as a staff member of Recolle U. ]
No, I haven't. I've never actually shot a gun, even though I have a few daddy collected from the war in my apartment. I think I've always been a little.. scared of them.
[ she says this with mild embarrassment, offering a sheepish smile and a small chuckle. it was a little silly, really. she had been around them her whole life. a gun was the reason she was alive and not a coyote's meal. but the power a gun contained.. it was a lot of responsibility. ]
I guess what I'm saying is.. I have no idea what I'm doing. It probably shows.

Liz would rather be armed with a nice pistol. ]
Only reason you should be scared is if one is pointed at you. If you don't draw first, you don't get to draw.
[ Elizabeth motions towards the range a bit, the small cubicles offering ear protectors, goggles, and a pistol laid out for the next user. ]
It doesn't show too much, you're not hanging around the entrance. That's always a plus. Would you want to watch me shoot and then give it a chance for yourself?

[Penelo is not exactly sure what she's doing here, but she's genuinely curious. Her parents had been soldiers, her brothers too, so she wasn't exactly uncomfortable around guns, and she'd shot them a few times. So, she's not a total newbie but she is definitely a novice. AT the indoor range, she's not doing so hot, missing the target more than once, the shock of the shots from the little handgun she's rented definitely a problem. Pointers would be nice!
Outside is a different story though. She's much more comfortable with a rifle because of her upbringing, her pop having taught her how to shoot at small targets like gila monsters back home. It takes her a few tries to warm up, but when she hits her target dead center for the first time all day she lets out a noisy little squeak of delight!]
The Back Room
[Pen files into the back room after it's all said and done, taking a seat. Grabbing a glass of white wine and a few crackers and cheese things to nibble on she settles in, looking at the crowd of women, a little unsure of where to start. She's kind of awkward in person, but she doesn't want to just leave. Unfortunately she might just come off as the weirdo who's staring at you...]
the back room
[Minako comes by with a glass of red wine herself, an easy grin on her face for the other woman.]
Pen, right? I saw you out in the range earlier but didn't get a chance to say hi. It's nice to see you again!
Re: the back room
That's right. Glad you remembered after the other night. You were pretty tipsy!
[Just a little light teasing.]
Have fun on the range?
no subject
Not tipsy enough to forget being embarrassing throughout the night, go figure.
And yeah, it was pretty interesting. Not what I was expecting to do for the first meeting, but I'm glad I got the chance to do this. Even if I'm apparently a terrible shot.

I just haven't practiced in ages. And I was so awful with a handgun it felt good to actually hit something.

The Range
At the bullseye, Asami offers applause and congratulations. ]
Look at that!
no subject
Look at that indeed. A dozen misses, but one hit is good enough.
no subject
All it takes is one.
[ She smiles. ]
And it's definitely better than I've been doing.

[Regina had fired a gun exactly twice in her entire life, both times prompted by a now-dead bodyguard/boyfriend who'd insisted she should know how to protect herself. It had been mostly a disaster really, but she'd been hitting the targets by the end of the second try? Kind of?]
[Still, she was self-aware enough to know she probably needed more friends her own age who she didn't mostly associate with in bars. And it couldn't hurt to try and shoot again, right? Bad memories or not.]
[So she'd asked the instructor for a few suggestions, and after a while was standing in one of the corrals, earphones on, and was trying to hit the target. She mostly missed, but a few actually went through the dangerous looking illustration of a man.]
[Progress?]
Event Room
[This was more like it. Small talk, snacks, drinks. Something she couldn't feel like she was failing at, really. What could go wrong?]
[She'd gotten herself a glass of red wine and a few crackers on a plate, and set about to mingling, offering a friendly smile to anyone who happened to look her way. She might like to keep her life private, but she was actually pretty good at meeting people when she was in the right mood.]
So that was fun, right? [She asked whoever was nearby.] I mean, I was terrible at it, but at least it was entertaining.
shooting range
She's not one to back down from a challenge, though, so after she shoots her professor a little grin as she faces the targets. A deep breath, and then recalling something Jade had told her, pulls the trigger while she exhales.
The recoil startles her, but her hands are steady enough to aim...and hit the very edge of the target.]
Hm.
[She gets the nagging feeling she's doing something fundamentally wrong, even though she's sure she followed all of the instructor's pointers to a tee...]
no subject
[She waited until the younger girl had taken off her earphones before speaking up.]
Not having much luck, hm?
no subject
[The bullet holes are clustered together at the edges, not a single shot making it past the second-outer ring. Minako pouts mightily.]
And here I thought my crane game depth perception skills would come in handy here.

When she sees Regina conversing with the instructor, she waits a bit until her rounds were over. ]
Not bad! I didn't hit a single target my first time here.

[Still, she had to admit, she'd done better than she had expected.]
I've done this...twice before. But it was years ago.

[It was a hell of an event to start the club off with, jumping straight into firearms like that. Freya should be socializing, she knew, but she kept getting distracted by the TV, staring at it with her brow furrowed and the wine glass forgotten in her hand.]
...have they always looked like that?
