WHO: Marcell, Ichirou, Yato, and Yukine
WHERE: Ichirou & Marcell's house.
WHEN: 9/2. Dinnertime.
WHAT: a lovely "meet the parents".
WARNINGS: language?
( for the longest time, yukine has made a concentrated effort to keep a solid distance between both of his parents and yato. he hadn't met yato under the best of circumstances and neither did they really hang around the most respectable crowd. in fact, yukine and yato themselves weren't anything that could be called respectable.
not that it really mattered to yukine. all that mattered was that he made sure that his parents didn't find out and start interfering with that side of his life.
which, uh, he honestly isn't all that afraid of anymore and on top of that, it seemed like a bit of a sore spot for yato. he got weird about it before and it's been in the back of yukine's mind since then, so he figures he might as well solve it. he talks to both of his parents first, making sure that they're comfortable with him inviting over a guest. ultimately they agree even though his mom is a little wary.
then he texts yato, telling him exactly when and where he expects him to be. it's not a question, just a command to come by for dinner. )

Besides, he doesn't really have too much room to talk, with how he acted as a kid. He is now curious to see who this guest there's an air of nervousness about actually is.
His mental image is significantly less track-suited than the actuality will be.]
no subject
Well, Yato's already met one parent. It's the other one that's a minor mystery. Yukine mentioned that his dad was a cop, which automatically puts a certain image in Yato's mind.
He leaves his katana behind.
Is he supposed to dress up? Nah, that would be weird. So, like, tracksuit. Yato shows up at the address Yukine gave him looking 100% like he always does, jacket open and sleeves pushed up against the waning warmth of the day. In one hand, he bears a big bottle of sparkling cider because Yukine is a damn child ruining the drink selection for the adults.
Knock knock! Yato waits for someone to answer... ]
no subject
He's is in the kitchen wrapping up the preparation for dinner when he hears the knocking on the door. ]
Dear, can you go get the door for me?
no subject
[Ichirou toddled over to the door and opened it.
It's highly unlikely Yato's mental image included Ichirou's hair. But that's fine, cause his own mental image was significantly less tracksuit-y.
His expression doesn't really change. Well, no. That would imply he was being stoic, or hiding his reaction. In reality it just sort of, freezes. Freezes mid-reaction, so he looks about 20% of the way to an alarmed stare.]
....Hello.
[It's a weird tone, too. The end doesn't rise, like a chipper sort of greeting. It also isn't inquisitive. It's more like the end. Drops. Like the end of that poor word was weighed down with so many emotions it sort of just. Died halfway out his mouth.]
no subject
Yato's tone of voice is perfectly level like nothing is strange, because nothing is wrong. Everything is okay and under control. ]
Hey. I think I got the wrong house.
[ TURNS TO WALK AWAY TBH ]
no subject
Nah. It's the right one.
( he interjects with a smile, but he's not ignorant to the fact that something is going on. the trouble, however, is figuring what it is before something stupid happens. had they met before? it seems likely. the city isn't all that big and yato seems to be a pretty active presence here. he just hopes that it wasn't under crappy circumstances.
good god, don't let it be under crappy circumstances. )
Have you guys met? Yato, this is my dad, Ichirou.
( might as well just let it slide for now. )
And Dad, this is Yato.
no subject
["And also when he cut that guy's hands off."
To his credit, Ichirou's expression recovers from shock pretty quickly. It's not really that he dislikes Yato. Even the whole attempted murder thing was... well, it was a lot closer to 'revenge' than 'defense' and he can't get behind that, but it's a pretty far cry from considering Yato some maniac.
Just really, really dumb.]
It was only for a moment though. Why don't you come in.
[He does scan Yato briefly...he doesn't see any objects that could be a katana or even a tanto or knife sticking through his despicable tracksuit, so that's probably fine. If he gets them alone he may ask how he got out of prison and how he didn't hear about it, but at the moment he got snatched up by the events of last month. Ichirou ain't gonna blame anybody for not returning to jail.]
no subject
Since it's clear that Ichirou won't be attempting to arrest the jail escapee standing on his doorstep, which would be entirely within his right, Yato tentatively relaxes. Ichirou is even inviting him into his home, presumably to have the pleasant dinner planned for the evening and not to trap Yato for easier apprehending.
Yato is finding that cop dads are surprisingly forgiving when it comes to letting criminals into their homes. ]
It's making a lot more sense why you were chaperoning that night.
[ He hands Yukine the bottle of cider before tugging his boots off and stepping in. ]
Good thing I brought this, or else it'd just be me and your mom drinking.
[ Speaking of Yukine's mom, Yato should say hi. He raises his voice and shouts into the house. ]
Hey, Marcell! It's me!
[ Yukine didn't seem to like his mom being called Tailor Man, so there you go. Also Yato may have left his sword behind but he still brought his pocket knife... it's small, not leaving much of an impression in his pocket, and more importantly, legal. ]
no subject
Hello, Yato. Dinner's almost ready, so make yourself at home.
[ Give him a moment to realise something is up with Ichirou and Yato. ]

( yukine mutters underneath his breath. that night was really one problem after another and any reminders of it were pretty frickin' annoying. well, okay, not any. he made an exception for the really good photos that had taken over the course of the night. hell, even the ones that that hacky photographer had taken were pretty good. he still liked to look at them fondly.
it makes sense to him, however, that both of his parents had met yato during that night, but what really sells the idea is that his dad is the one telling him. he has no reason to doubt what his dad has to say, but on the other hand, he's also now dead convinced that yato had already successfully embarrassed himself in front of both his parents. you know, if the interactions yato had had with his mom were any indication.
he snorts. )
You think he was some weirdo just aching to hang out with a bunch of high schoolers like you?
( then he's getting a bottle of something pushed towards him. cider? huh. okay. that's unexpected. )
Oh, whoa, I can't believe you actually brought something! Thanks?
( except he's wearing a tracksuit, so he's not sure if yato deserves any points for that. doesn't he have normal clothes? with a gentle hand at yato's elbow, he tries to steer him towards the living room couch. )
no subject
[ ... To be fair, his manners could use some improvement. But it's less that he doesn't know manners and more that he chooses to ignore them.
He'll let himself get herded into the living room, where he sits and looks around at the decor. He's been in a lot of homes in Recolle, often because he didn't have one of his own. Observing the similarities and differences among them is always a point of interest. ]
Are you staying here now, Yuki?
no subject
yukine doesn't bother answering that. not when yato already knows the answer. )
Yea. They were super lonely without me.
( that's absolutely not the reason or what he thinks, but he doesn't wanna talk about why he chose to move in when he did. )
And my mom's a great cook. It's not like that at my aunt's house.
no subject
[ He says it fondly, though. And he grins. ]
You sure you weren't the one feeling lonely for Mom and Pop? C'mon, you can admit it.
no subject
[The normalcy isn't really an act. He was initially weirded out by Yato, but he's not really wary around him. He thinks he has a pretty good nose for that sort of thing, and Yato doesn't put off anything THAT worrisome.
I mean.
Sweat and tracksuit, but that's nothing.]
Although I'll admit I'm surprised he didn't come around more often than he did for food, considering his aunt...
no subject
Dinner's ready!
no subject
( the call from the kitchen is enough to silence him mid-sentence. he casts a glance between his father and yato once before heading out of the room, waving yato with his free hand to come with him. )
C'mon aniki. It's this way.
( oops. )
no subject
He's more wondering if Yukine does. He suspects it's something similar to it's real meaning, of course. Yato does live a bit of a knifey lifey so him being a crook isn't that far out.
He pointedly ignores it though.
He just files it away. His expression flickers for the briefest moment, but nothing more than that. Law enforcement, if nothing else, gives you a decent poker face.]
You're so excited, you'd think we never have company...
no subject
Whooaa! You made this, Marcell?! It smells great!
[ He helps himself to a seat at the table. Please get that chicken into his mouth. ]
Man, you guys really are a family.
[ whatever that means ]
no subject
Haha, thank you. But whatever gave you the impression otherwise, Yato?
[ It just seems strange to make that kind of comment... ]
no subject
As opposed to what? A fake family?
( he snorts. what did yato expect? )
Nah, they picked me off the street and told me to pretend or else I'll be back on the street again. I've been living a life of fear!
( obviously kidding. then in a fake whisper, he continues. )
I'd tell you to call the police but he is the police.
no subject
He hardly has to eat gruel at all, and we give him a blanket with only a few holes in the winter.
[He's very politely sitting. It's the kind of politeness that was clearly learned rather than innate.]
We even let him live in the closet under the steps, you see.
no subject
[ Take your gruel to the broom closet and enjoy it, you ungrateful brat. ]
I met all of you guys separately, so seeing you as a family is like... finding out your friends have been Destiny's Child all along. Freaky.
no subject
He's a sweet boy, though. Besides, I don't think it's that freaky that we're family.
no subject
( this person is not nearly old enough to know of your 90's girl bands, yato. his brows furrow as he considers it and reaches for his phone for the sake of consulting google. nothing will answer a question faster than google. patting his pockets, yukine comes to discover that they are woefully empty.
. . .
fuck. he left his phone upstairs in his room. he needs that! he's probably missed some texts from koushuu. )
Uh. I'll be right back! I left my phone.
( before anyone can tell him that he honestly doesn't need it just to eat dinner, yukine is already escaping the kitchen to begin his search. )
no subject
Aniki, huh?
[His eyes lock onto Yato quite effectively. It's sort of an inquisitive, yet also stern stare.]
I seem to recall that meaning something very specific. [In a tone that adds 'and I know exactly what that something is.]
