Party rock is in the house tonight
WHO: Penelope Raban and College Aged Friends
WHERE: Penelope's House
WHEN: 9/1 and into the wee hours of 9/2
WHAT: A Labor Day/Back To School/We're Alive/Welcome to Retrospec Party
WARNINGS: Language, Drinking (Potentially underage), possible mentions of violence/sexuality, stupid college shenaningans.
In the wake of the general nightmare that was August, the addition of new Retrospec users in their age bracket that a lot of them knew, and the general holiday + back to school rush, a party seemed like a good idea to Pen. Conferring with Vera and others, Pen decided to make it happen, setting up her place for more than just the usual drinking and shenanigans. They all deserved it, after all, for Balancing School, Life, and Retrospec, sometimes these sorts of things are all that keeps you sane!
I. Afternoon
It starts early, as these things often should. By late afternoon, Pen's backyard is filled with the smells of grilled meats and roasting vegetables. A table is set up with condiments and buns for the, burgers, hotdogs, chicken, tofu, all that good stuff plus chips and chili to go with it. Coolers of beer and spirits, tea, soda, lemonade, and some Japanese soda abomination Pen found called Ice Cucumber Pepsi that seems to have been left there for the truly adventurous.
There's a cornhole game setup, and tables and cups for beer pong and other party games if people feel inclined, as well as an elaborate outdoor speaker system set up by the host herself playing a mix of music ranging from classic rock to low-key pop hits of today. Enjoy!
II. Dusk
Night's approach heralds the arrival of the bane of all parties: mosquitos. Everything mostly moves indoors, with snacks and leftovers in the kitchen and seating set up all over. Drinks still flow and games come out.
Pen's got things set up for people to play Super Crash Brothers and Dario Cart and things like that in one room, and what party would be complete without Never Have I Ever and Truth or Dare? Someone even thinks it might be a good idea to set up Two Truths and a Lie...
III. Night
It's getting on in the evening, but Pen has one last little surprise for everyone set up. Just like the 4th of July, there's a rather nice fireworks display set up! She's actually taken the time to sobor up too, so it goes a bit more smoothly. Firecrackers, sparklers, and other such things are laid out for anyone with an interest...and citronella torches line the back yard like soldiers, forming a shield against invading insects.
This is the time to take a moment, relax, pull someone special aside and have a moment. Nobody is looking, and even if they were, nobody'll judge. Everyone needs a little peace sometimes, to enjoy the simple things. After the last month, it's clear that nothing is permament, and everyone should take time out to appreciate nights like this. You never know what tomorrow will bring.

TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE
no subject
One: I broke a window out of Seto Kaiba's office on the top floor of the Transcend:GAME studios to jump out because Baren Kaiyou called security on himself.
Two: When I was fourteen my dad was invited to play at the Grammys and I snuck out of the green room and stole Taylor Swift's seat while she was up schmoozing with a bunch of pop music execs.
Three: I've gone to a party in the Parisian catacombs where one of the kids crowbarred a skull out to try and use as a drinking goblet like in the movies. ...it went about as well as you'd expect.

Vera
[After her last grilling adventure, Vera's learned well enough to leave the burgers to the professionals. Still, she might hang around to watch other people cook, taking some mental notes as to when the best time to flip them is. Seriously, they go from "done" to "burnt" so quickly. How do you know???
She'll be all over the place in the afternoon, mingling with people, mixing drinks, and trying her hand at cornhole. She's surprisingly accurate for someone who hasn't played before, but it's not long before the drinks bring an end to that. Hopefully someone doesn't catch a bean bag to the back of the head. Oops!]
II.
[Vera's going to kick your ass in Dario Kart and you are going to thank her for the privilege. Or at least she's going to talk a lot of shit while doing decently at the game. Once she figures out how to boost from the starting line, she's going to think herself invincible.
Otherwise, she'll be hopping around hanging out with people or playing games. A drink will always be in her hands, and after a month like this, she plans on getting pretty hammered. Please don't mind the drunken heiress trying way too hard to be your friend. At least she's in a good mood?]
III.
[The night is winding down, and Vera's stopped drinking for the night. Like last time, Vera's offered to pay for Ubers for anyone who wants to go home for the night.
When the fireworks begins, she'll park herself on a blanket under one of the citronella candles. This time, she'll leave the show to Pen, as she's not sure she's quite sober enough to do it this time. Instead, she'll just sit back with a piping hot mug of cocoa and watch the show. Care to join her?]
Wildcard
[Come at me with whatever you like!]
II
Which means when Vera rockets off at the starting line, and Cleo doesn't start until the green light, she's very confused.]
Did you just start before the green light?
[She sounds more confused than angry, at least, her cat ears twitching in alarm.]

[You can find Minako sitting near the speaker system, singing and humming along to her favorite songs that come up. She's enjoying the atmosphere, finding it pleasant to people watch, but if you come to her to socialize, she'll offer a smile and the seat next to her.
Or maybe instead--]
Do you want to play Charades with me? We can pick an easy category like 'animals' or 'act it out' to get us warmed up.
II. POUR ME ANOTHER
[Around this time Minako can be found curled up on the couch with a glass of something that looks suspiciously like...]
I mixed that Iced Cucumber Pepsi with...something. It's really good. Wanna try?
[She's already a bit tipsy by then, but maybe you find her later when she's pretty much flat out drunk, very affectionately reaching out to bring people into hugs as she wanders the space.]
III. WHEN THE MOON REACHES FOR THE STARS
[For all that Minako gets drunk really quickly, she also sobers up pretty quickly as well. Once night falls, she can be found outside, a blanket around her shoulders and her arms around her knees, head tilted back to stare up wistfully at the fireworks...and the moon just beyond. It's not a full moon, but it's very close. Is it already time for harvest moon viewing back in Japan? She closes her eyes and counts syllables with the rhythmic tapping of her fingers until she has a poem.]
Citronella scents / Take me to other summers / Watermelon slices / Shared with child-like chubby hands / Juice dripping from sweet twin smiles.
II.
Oh well, down the hatch.]
Oh wow, that's... actually not bad. What did you put in it?

Yuffie
[Weird and stupid Japanese sodas are not abnormal to Yuffie. She lived on the crap when she was in Japan. So she takes one of those ice cucumber Pepsi bottles and does what anyone else would do to make it less gross. She dumps some out and adds some vodka to it.]
There! Now that’s a big improvement! Ah, it’s good to be home!
[She needed this. Just a conglomeration of bodies and people to make a bunch of noise. Time to share her concoction and get drunk!]
[B]
[When night falls Yuffie has several of the sparkles in her hands. She’s passing them out to people and encouraging them to light them up. There isn’t much left of the summer and school starts right away so might as well enjoy these times while it lasts.
She takes a collection of firecrackers and sets those off somewhere nearby. The crackle and pop makes Yuffie giggle with delight. She likes explosions.]
Hey, how about we set off some more fireworks?!
A
[Vera's already had a couple in her as well, so she's fairly loosened up. Loose enough to talk to people that she doesn't know.]

Pen
Pen's spending a good bit of time actually working the grill today, and will definitely be taking orders if someone has a specific request. After someone else takes a shift at the meat-station though, she'll be found with a plate laden with food, all of it slathered with chili because truly everything is just a vessel for spice. Catch her chowing down?
Beyond that, she's probably just mingling, walking up to people with a wave, happy to catch up!
II
In the early evening hours, Pen is moving from person to person, making sure everyone's still having fun and trying to play the positive host. She's definitely got a drink in her hand now, and she's wobbling just a little as she walks.
Eventually she winds up sitting in front of the TV though, and if anyone's up for a drunken game of basically anything, come at her!
At some point in the evening, she also hooks up a computer to a TV and starts running through some of the Go-Pro video she'd taken up in space. Which shows, weirdly enough, the interior of a submarine along with Seto Kaiba.
"I still can't believe this actually happened."
III
After the display goes off, Pen can be found standing outside, just staring up at the stars. It's been a long month, a long year, really, and it's all pretty overwhelming. Approach as you like, though don't be shocked if she doesn't immediately notice your presence. When she does, she shifts and looks back.
"Hey. Thanks for coming out tonight."
III.
"You kidding? After everything we've been through last month, there's no way I'd miss something like this. It's nice to feel normal again."

Cleo
[Cleo wasn't exactly invited, as such. Rather, Minako mentioned it to her, and despite the cat ears, she's closer to a lost puppy, following those few people she knows.
Of course, being herself, she's showing up in her motorcycle gear, with a goddamn sword strapped to her waist, so she's probably more than a little strange to see, her cat ears twitching in anxiety. Especially given that she's just gotten a small plate of food, and is seemingly intent to wallflower the whole time. Being social is hard, and she's not what to do here, but she knows she should try to make more friends...]
[II: Games]
[So, somehow, Cleo's been roped into the Dario Kart. The problem is, of course, that she's never really played any video games, and of course, she never learned the strategy. So when she suddenly takes first place when everyone in front of her hits the brakes, she's very pleased.
Until a spiked shell flies from the sky and explodes, causing her kart to fall off the edge of the arena, as she herself makes a completely undignified yelp and fumbles the controller, trying to catch it and get back into the game... It's not going well.]
[III: Fireworks]
[The problem with fireworks is that she has very sensitive ears, but she still appreciates them. So you have Cleo, trying to cover her cat ears, while still trying to watch the fireworks without backing off to a quieter distance.
That said, when she finally notices people around her pulling aside their special someones, her face burns almost as hot as the torches, and she quickly just. scampers off backwards to the torches and very determinedly does not look at any of the other partygoers. Someone help her.]
iii;
We should really have some of the tech people on Retrospec design some ear buds or something for you.
Ah, maybe we could ask Leo?
[Can Cleo even hear her talking right now.]

[Once again, the salt shakers have steadily gone missing from near the grill. Not the ones on the tables, and they're still hidden in inconvenient yet easily accessible places. Behind a stack of cups or a cooler, for instance.
The culprit(?)'s sitting out in the open, though, on a bench facing the grill. Arms crossed and seemingly minding her own business. And staring at whoever came up to it.
Like a normal person.]
III.
[Lucy's found a box of those little twists of paper and...whatever else inside that went bang. Or well, pop. These weren't very obnoxious, and made a pretty little puff of sparks when thrown hard enough against pavement. And she seemed to be enjoying herself! ...if occasionally jumping away and cursing whenever one of the poppers landed too close to her feet.
But soon she'd emptied that box out down to the sawdust, and Lucy returned to the legal explosives table. She didn't care that people were nearby, and addressed one directly.]
Is there another box over here?

[She might not have gone through what some of the others have, but this party feels like it's just what they needed.
She's out in the backyard for the most part, trying her own hand at the occasional burger. The poor girl has never really been taught how to barbeque, so when it comes off the grill as a hard, charred puck, Aria's really reluctant to give it to anyone.]
...This is not like regular cooking, is it?
[She might have to eat it herself. She's too nice to torture someone's mouth with this.]
ii.
[She's a little buzzed by the time they moved inside. Truth be told, she can already tell that some of them are going to be far more drunk than her already, so she's trying to do her best to keep an eye on a few people. She's seen what overdoing it does to a person.
Buuuuut, despite not being a gamer, she becomes thoroughly distracted when someone starts up a game of Super Crash Brothers. After a few rounds of play, she gets the hang of things and figures out most of the combos for her character.
Which means, she might be button smashing the hell out of the controller. Sorry Pen. If she breaks it, she'll buy you another one.]
Come on! Come and get me!
iii.
[Aria's actually out in the backyard long before the fireworks are supposed to be set off. This is her first real party in a long time, mostly cause it's either work or practice or try outs...
It's nice to actually just cut loose a little bit, even if she isn't drunk off her ass.
But it's nice to take a little bit of time for herself. She's got one cooler in her hand that she's slowly nursing and a sweater to take off the chill as she keeps her eyes to the sky. Hikari's already told her a little about the constellations, so she's trying to place them in the night sky.]

[Honestly, Mako's the guy who is hanging behind everyone, leaning against the walls, watching all the shenanigans. He enjoys people watching, but... drunken shenanigans aren't so much his thing. Especially when it becomes obvious he's only going for sodas and waters.
But, hey, he'll engage if people come close enough! Especially after some of these awkward Truth or Dare/Never Have I Ever shenanigans.]
Don't remember that arrest.
ii.
[As the night wears on, and people get more drunk, Mako is going to be passing out waters.
Seriously.
You need water. Just take it. He'll even helpfully lie and say it's vodka if he thinks you're far gone enough man. Just let him do his job as a cop.]
II
[And there was Felicia-- slightly tipsy but not so far gone that she's lost her head to the wind, with eyes bright and shining eagerly once she realized what it was that this kind, handsome young man was doing amidst the drunken revelry. She had noticed him only drinking sodas throughout the day and hadn't thought much of it, but this was an interesting turn that she hadn't expected.
Besides, she was sure that Pen didn't want to call the ambulance because of someone passed out drunk on her lawn that evening.]

[Terra is late to the party, as he tends to be to things that he's not completely comfortable with. Even though his number of friends has doubled since last time, there's still a weird sense of not belonging. Leaned up against the wall in his jacket like only cool, depressed loner boys do, watching everyone play their games with a soft, reserved smile. It might be fun to play truth or dare or any of those games like that, but...not for him. That sort of thing just leads to inevitably talking about something that he doesn't really want to talk about, or doing something he isn't comfortable with. Not much of a game, actually.
He takes a long drink of his Ice Cucumber Pepsi, which is surprisingly refreshing. Polishing it off, he places it onto a nearby table, which also holds a numerous empty or discarded beer bottles and soda cans. Absent mindedly, Terra starts placing the empty drinks next to each other, and then collecting a few more, and stacking them on top--after a few minutes, a full on beer bottle/can castle is being constructed as though it were a jenga tower. He realizes that this is fucking stupid, but the pleasant music and raucous atmosphere actually makes it kind of fun.]
Wow, I'm an artist.
Kinda cool...
II
[Come nightfall proper, Terra is still continuing to be a dumb loner, laying on the grass outside looking up at the fireworks and the stars. He feels pretty certain that stars hold some sort of special significant to his other life, so looking up at them definitely calms him down. Maybe he'll remember something if he does it enough? Each one is it's own world...? Something like that. He leans up to take a drink of the beer placed next to him--nothing especially strong. Terra doesn't really like getting drunk at parties--or at all. Just kind of unbecoming and dangerous. Going to parties reminds him of how little fun he is in general. At least it's relaxing. He closes his eyes briefly. Hopefully you don't accidentally trip over him tall frame.]
II, better late than never
Enjoying the show?

Seriously, Japan?
[she says to nobody in particular, holding up a bottle of the Ice Cucumber Pepsi. Well, at least it might be good for dares later...]
Day (2)
[As anybody who was at karaoke night knows, Arlene isn't a singer. She can't carry a tune in a bucket. Just don't give her a mic, seriously. What she can do, and prides herself on, is dance. When a suitable pop hit comes on, she picks out a section of lawn to be her dance floor, and hits that floor.
Of course, it would be a lot more fun with a friend (or likely stranger). Maybe she tries to pull you in.]
Evening
[As always, she's here for the party games... at least until things get awkward. Arlene retreats to the kitchen to get a glass of water and stew for a bit. Grumbling to herself about not being a mindreader, she picks a corner as far from the desserts as possible and huddles there over her glass.]
Night
[Arlene doesn't contribute to the fireworks show this time. She could, but most of the people on this lawn have seen it before; it wouldn't have the same impact. Instead she pulls up a lawn chair and kicks back, lazily waving one sparkler after another and snuffing them out in an empty can. Noticing somebody else passing by, she waves them over.]
Hey. Had fun?
Evening
But it needs to be handled, and it's her party so while Arlene's sulking Pen slips into the kitchen and in a low...firm but not unkind or angry voice asks:]
Going to guess you didn't hear about Ryoji Mochizuki?

bolin
[ Bolin has amassed himself quite a spread. There's enough food piled on his plate that it wouldn't be a stretch if someone thought that he got food for two people, instead of one.
He's also got that Ice Cucumber Pepsi. He takes a long look at it before shrugging and chugging it. ]
Hey, you know, this isn't that bad!
iii;
Whoa, did you see that? It was amazing!
[ Bolin is leaning against the wall, more so for support than anything else. ]
It's been a while since I've seen any fireworks. How about you?

[It's not a great day for a party for Dante, honestly. It was just earlier today that he found out that apparently Ari doesn't remember anything about her time in Recollé. He'd expected that she'd forget about Retrospec and everything that it had entailed, that much was almost a given... but he hadn't expected her to forget about the two of them. He'd thought that at least they would keep that. But no, on top of everything else that had happened in the past month, he's now having to deal with the fact that his girlfriend--his ex?--apparently has forgotten that the two of them were ever a couple, and what's more, that she hadn't even blinked at the fact that he hadn't talked to her in over a month.
Add that on top of all of everything else that happened in mansion hell? And it's no wonder that Dante's been drunk once already before he even reaches the party with Vera.
For the most part he's content to just hang out where everybody else is. He's being uncharacteristically quiet, only contributing his normal sarcasm every once in a while instead of needling at others like he's wont to do sometimes. If anyone asks he'll wave the concern off, but it's going to be an odd night for Dante.]
ii. rooftop
[Act out your most dramatic death. It's enough to get the wheels spinning again, throwing him back into the spiral he'd been starting to finally escape. Dante tries at first to just back out of the game a bit, turning his attention to his phone and the Retrospec post that's apparently gone up while they've been playing... but then he starts talking with Togusa and it's too much, too much.
He doesn't say anything as he slips out of the house, shutting the door quietly behind him. He can't talk about this while there are other people around; it's too likely that his expression would give everything away, in spite of how good a poker face he normally has. So Dante jumps his way up to the roof, landing lightly and finding a spot where he can sit comfortably in the night air.
He'll be here for a while.]
