JULY EVENT LOG 2.0

EVENT
CRASH AND BURN
The last day of the ReConvention finds con-goers crowding the convention center for last-minute panels and purchases. The halls fill with attendees bartering for wares, attending autograph sessions and showing off their cosplays. But for a select number of people, time is of the essence.

Those who scanned their QR codes at the Retrospec booth will notice that their countdown clock draws closer to zero. With each second ticking closer and closer to the end, a sense of urgency settles around the crowd.

But, perhaps you’re one of the ones who will carry on as if nothing is happening. Or maybe you didn’t scan your code at all. It doesn’t matter though. There’s nothing stopping the clock from its descent backwards, and as the timer strikes zero a loud, piercing roar echoes off of every wall of the convention center.

I.
Those who were brave enough to scan their received QR codes (and even those who didn't but received one regardless) will find that their mobile devices shock them, a quick electric burst that leaves behind a white-hot sort of pain. When you open your eyes after the initial hit, a floating treasure chest appears. While there may be multiple chests surrounding you, it seems you may only open those with your name on them.

Another beam of light shines upon opening your prizes, orbs skyrocketing through the air as they circle briefly before settling around you. A surge of energy ignites within, and for some lucky few new companions and items have also been rewarded to those who played Jim's game. But…perhaps they aren't the ones you expected. Perhaps they make no sense at all. Why not give them a try?

II.
But seeing how the convention center continues to shake, it might be better to find out what’s up. The source of chaos can be traced back to Seto Kaiba's gaming booth as a projector in the wall releases monster after monster that pour out of the projection and come to life. Though the TV above Kaiba’s booth is shattered, the projector keeps rolling and the monsters appear while destroying the booth itself in their haste to be free. Among the rubble left behind the blue glow of the Retrospec symbol shines brightly from a side-panel of the projector.

For those in the convention center, there is the option to run and hide. With the building shifting due to the onslaught of attacks, piles of drywall, cracks and crevices and more provide for good hiding spots to give you time to make a new plan.

Of course, there's always the fight option. What will it take to bring these beasts down? Maybe it's best to lure them outside instead and away from civilians.

III.
Or perhaps that was a bad idea. Whether citizens manage to wrangle the monsters outside or not the beasts will make their way out on their own, fighting amongst themselves and chasing people through the city's streets. Even those who didn't attend the convention will find that the infestation spreads to every district of the city itself, and their QR-given items and abilities kick in. They aren't going for the kill, but they will follow any moving target including those who aren't on the Retrospec network. Though these citizens may run, hide or need rescuing, if asked they will simply remark that the city's always had a bit of a monster problem.

However, now that the fight's moved outside, it's easier to see the distinct red tint to the monsters' eyes every time they blink. A monster that has to forcibly change direction will flicker for a moment, like an image buffering and loading. Even when a monster unleashes an attack, some fighters may take the full impact while others get away with minor to no damage. In those moments, it's easier to bring them to a halt.

When a monster meets its demise though, something strange happens. The flickering is more rapid and faster, and the creature will dissolve into black blocks and spores that evaporate into thin air. What the hell was that? Now probably isn't the best time to ask questions.

IV.
The fighting rages on but with the sun still hanging in the sky it's impossible to tell what time it is. One of the monsters seems to have knocked out the nearby cell phone tower, too, taking down not only cell phone reception, but the entire Retrospec network as well.

It goes on for what feels like hours with the sun beating down from above. Retrospec users battle monsters and fight to reconnect while the network errors out any time someone tries to send a message about the city under attack. It seems as though a new wave of monsters appear just as the last one dies down.

It's with a sudden jolt that reception on your mobile device returns, but Retrospec appears to be in a maintenance mode where the network is still inaccessible. A quick glance at the date on your phone reveals that instead of the mere hours you thought, nearly five days have passed by and you realize the date is now August 3rd. Upon that realization everyone's devices begin to chime with several notifications and the monsters all seem to pause for one brief moment. Not long after, Retrospec members will also find themselves frozen in place no matter how hard they struggle. The spell on the monsters breaks as they swoop upon these unfortunate few, picking them up in their claws, hands or mouths. A large swirling portal opens not far away and one by one creatures dive straight through the portal with the Retrospec users.

These portals may spit you out anywhere in the city, but several of them send residents to Peach Beach. Strangely, the monsters are nowhere to be found, but way out in the distance appears to be a creature, swallowing up the ocean in a swirl of waves.

You can try to run out to fight it, but the moment your feet touch what used to be the ocean floor a forcefield throws you back to the sand allowing the ocean to slip away right before your eyes. The moment the last drop is drained, that monster disappears, too.

What happens next? To be continued…

And welcome to the wrap-up of the ReConvention! As Prompt IV says, monster attacks will continue through all five days (July 30th, 31st, August 1st, 2nd and 3rd) and the network will not be accessible to anyone in-game from now until August 3rd when a mod-posted Retrospec post goes live! Please feel free to play with the monster attacks as you wish! You can have your characters escape via glitches in the monsters, or you can fight the monsters and and your character can actually take damage for a real battle (though death is not an option at this time.) We leave that up to you!

Please do not post any threads in this log or in your inboxes set for after this log just yet! We will be setting up August's event via this log and for plot purposes we ask that you refrain from doing anything prior to our Retrospec post on 8/3.

Those who are in Group One or Group Two will learn more about their small-focus teams on August 3rd when your logs goes live.

Please direct questions about this log to the mod comment here. Thanks!

[Freya's arm slips protectively around her back. Kidnapped, beaten, left to die, and... god knows what else.] What's he got against her to dump her in a mine full of those things?
mincingminuet: (Down)

[personal profile] mincingminuet 2017-08-03 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it was because he had anything against her. [She draws a shuddering breath, utterly drained.]

He said something about using me as bait. And once he didn't have a use for me...? I think the only reason he let me go was he didn't want to waste the effort killing me. The monsters would do it for him.
belligerentwarrior: (I could see it in her face)

[personal profile] belligerentwarrior 2017-08-03 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have anything to be scared of. [Freya dips her head, pressing her lips against Pen's hair.]

These monsters aren't gonna do a damn thing. I won't let that happen to you.
mincingminuet: (Disturbed)

[personal profile] mincingminuet 2017-08-03 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[Pen takes a long, slow breath, Freya's scent...that of sweat, worbla, and the muted smell of her shampoo...filling her. Letting out that breath, she nods...]

I know...[But she sounds miserable all the same.] I know, I know. I wish...sometimes...I could just go back to being a Hobbit. No memories, no monsters ...nothing. Just me.

[Worbla, Pen might notice, that's losing it's shape near Freya's skin.]

Don't say that. [Freya murmurs back, almost immediately, her voice low. But... then what? She's at a loss for a strong reason why. Freya understood just as well—if not better—the weight and harm of those awful memories. She understood the longing to be rid of them.]

[She realizes, a second later, that it was entirely a selfish request; Freya didn't want to think about Pen as one of the oblivious crowd. Most of them probably would be better off. Still, her arm tightens around Pen.]

Look, everything's gonna work out. This'll pass. Just... don't give up, alright? You've got a lot of people to rely on.
mincingminuet: (Gloomy)

[personal profile] mincingminuet 2017-08-03 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[Pen remains quiet for a long moment, processing all of this, still shaking a little but gradually seeming to get a grip on herself.  Freya, of all people, she trusted.  And Freya, of all people, knew exactly how bad those memories could be.  That'd been at the start of their relationship, in fact, and she wasn't about to dismiss that as a platitude.  Or as selfish, for that matter.]

I know...I know.  [She still sounds a little frustrated, but manages to pull back enough to meet Freya's eyes.  The wild, fearful look has faded, a kind of wary resolve replacing it.]

I have you.  And other people, too.  I know that.  I just...fuck, sometimes it's easier to think about life before freaking monsters and knights and Gabranth, and weird rabbit people.

[One hand closes around the necklace she'd made holding the Auracite baubles.  The other reaches up to gingerly touch her girlfriend's face...]

But I wouldn't give up on you, or any of these little guys.  I just...Christ...you know what it's like.  I'm sorry if I freak you out like this, sometimes.

belligerentwarrior: (This'll be fun)

[personal profile] belligerentwarrior 2017-08-03 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[Freya smiles warmly at those weary silver eyes. She tilts her head enough to convey amusement, but not enough to break contact. Freya's skin's still unusually warm, but not as warm as it had been during the fight.]

Don't you worry; I get it. It's a hell of a shock. Easy to lose yourself in it. [Her free hand settles on the back of Penelope's neck, Freya's thumb moving briefly in a little caress.] Sure, it scares me, even if I get it; 'course it does. You're my partner.

[Freya leans in, catching Pen's lips in a slow, tender kiss.]
mincingminuet: (Hugs)

[personal profile] mincingminuet 2017-08-04 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
[Penelope lets the necklace drop, her eyes glimmering a little in the dimness, a weak sigh the only sound she can make without her voice cracking after that kiss. It takes her off guard, and banishes the bad feelings in an eyeblink, eliciting a weak groan from her.

But after a moment, she swallows thickly and nods.]

Thanks, Freya. [She slides forward, hugging onto the taller woman and kissing her again before laying her head on her partner's shoulder.]

God. It's so good hearing you say that. Doesn't make me feel less sorry for freaking out on you but I...I am so glad I went up on that roof last spring.

belligerentwarrior: (That's a good girl)

[personal profile] belligerentwarrior 2017-08-04 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[She sighs softly after the return kiss. The hand on Pen's neck slides down to her hip. Outside, the sounds of destruction and bestial roars grew louder. One of the bearthings, if she had to guess. ]

Mm. So am I. If things were different, I'd push you down on this table and show you how glad. [Freya chuckles, before her tone turns briefly exasperated, and she casually plucks the Zodiac Spear from Pen's belt.] Buuuut apparently the world's ending, out there. You on your feet again?
Edited 2017-08-04 13:39 (UTC)
mincingminuet: (Smile)

[personal profile] mincingminuet 2017-08-04 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[Pen's smile turns a little bit wry, her eyes flashing with heat.]

Well, we can always fuck like bunnies when the world is through ending. Or as we all go out together. Hell, that even sounds romantic right now.

[Grabbing Freya into another desperate, passionate kiss, Pen slides down to the floor.]

I'm good to go though. We should go help your weird dragon transformer. And then you're gonna show me how glad you are.

[That's as good a motivator as any. She eyes the spear in Freya's hand.]

I'll want that back later, though. The shillelagh just doesn't have the same oomph.
belligerentwarrior: (Come on then)

[personal profile] belligerentwarrior 2017-08-04 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[The kiss is someone ineffective and disrupted, considering Freya's shoulders start shaking halfway through, and a laugh bubbles out of her throat shortly after. After they part, she's looking down at her partner, grinning, eyes shining with amusement and approval and want.]

You are just deceptively voracious, you know that?

[Freya takes a deep breath, refocusing her thoughts to more helpful things. It takes her a few flicks of the wrist to get the spear to extend, and shoulders the ornate thing.]

Oh, the big guy? He's probably gone by now. Can't seem to stick around very long. And don't you worry; I'll give it back, after I've had a turn to play with it. Retrospec hasn't mailed me anything fun, you know.
mincingminuet: (Sigh)

[personal profile] mincingminuet 2017-08-05 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
[Penelope laughs, a bright, happy, almost normal laugh.]

I know. Once I get a taste of something I really like, I can't stop.

[Which is probably bad with most things, but she has this feeling that Freya likes hearing this. she doesn't feel a need to hide or be ashamed of her urges with this one, and she's always had a bad habit of equating touch with attachment. In this case though, it's probably okay.]

And really? Then he's not like mine. But...then he's also not cute so...

[She trails off, separating herself from her girlfriend at last, picking up her cane.]

I didn't think I'd be fighting monsters in my cosplay. We...should try and get home, get to where my gun and your bow are.
belligerentwarrior: (Come on then)

[personal profile] belligerentwarrior 2017-08-06 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
[That answer (and laughed) pleases Freya, and she give her girlfriend the pat-pat on a cheek she deserves.]

Sounds like a plan. Hell of a ways on foot, and I'm doubtful the streets'll be clear enough to drive in the state of things.
mincingminuet: (Flat)

[personal profile] mincingminuet 2017-08-06 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
We can make it.

[They will, they have to.]

Can't be any worse than when we were tiny, right?
belligerentwarrior: (I'm great you're great everyone's great)

[personal profile] belligerentwarrior 2017-08-06 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
[Freya's face flickers into something a little surly at the reminder of that miserable, godawful week.]

You know, I'm startin' to think it really can't. Hey, how about the time a bunch of people almost drowned? Or got pneumonia, or trench foot, or hypothermia? What about eaten by giant birds, and insects?

Gotta say, that one really takes the prize. [This mess? Downright easy.]
mincingminuet: <user name=axiometric> (Le Sigh)

[personal profile] mincingminuet 2017-08-06 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right?

[Pen leans heavily on the shillelagh, looking up at her partner with some serious consideration. That was a hell of a statement, really, and while she'd been joking initially...]

You left out the fact that we almost got eaten by possums. There is nothing freakier than a pissed off opossum. Not even undead bats.
belligerentwarrior: (That's a good girl)

[personal profile] belligerentwarrior 2017-08-06 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[Freya hated that week with a passion. At that size, the city was almost impossible to traverse, especially in the spring rains. After she got caught in one of the run-off streams, Freya'd been out for days trying to get back home.]

[But there was an opportunity in that sentence, so she turns back to Pen, her expression turn around in a grin, and claps her girlfriend on the back.]
Right? Nothing to fear at all, lookin' at it like that.

[What did she mean, "undead?" Oh well. Probably wasn't important, in the grand scheme of things.] C'mon. I think I lost the roo out there.
mincingminuet: (Lighting the Way)

[personal profile] mincingminuet 2017-08-06 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[Pen nods, agreeing with that. Though at the mention of the Roo...she can't help but crack a little smile.]

Yeah, we can't have that. Not now that you're getting attached.

[And her little squid makes a burbling noise by the door, clearly ready to go!]
belligerentwarrior: (Believe in Lady Luck now?)

[personal profile] belligerentwarrior 2017-08-07 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I am not gettin' attached. Just feel bad, leaving the little bastard out in that mess.

[Yes, she protests. This kangaroo mascot is totally targeting her, alright?]

[Freya grabs the metal rod she's been using.]
Would you get one of your little guys to hold this? I'm gonna need it after giving back the spear.

[And then, she unnecessarily kicks the door to the hallway open. Why open it normally, when the place is going to hell anyway?]
mincingminuet: (Little Shit)

[personal profile] mincingminuet 2017-08-07 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I understand. I wouldn't leave without my squid-friend.

[Squiddly burbles happily and reaches up to take the rod Freya's been using.

Setting herself with her club, Pen prepares for a fight.

And then Freya kicks the door open and there's nothing on the other side. Just a hallway, and the sounds of distant fighting.]

...way to go, Trambo.
belligerentwarrior: (Took you long enough)

[personal profile] belligerentwarrior 2017-08-09 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
You let me have my fun. As if I could go around doin' this when the city's not losing it's collective heads.

[You're not the boss of her, she can kick doors if she wants.]
mincingminuet: <user name=axiometric> (Hopeful)

[personal profile] mincingminuet 2017-08-09 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well you could. Just yell something like 'fire marshal!' or something.

[You know. That might be funny.]
belligerentwarrior: (Believe in Lady Luck now?)

[personal profile] belligerentwarrior 2017-08-09 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Hate to be the killjoy, but as if I'm doin' anything to risk the job I've had for less than a month.

[Freya stalks out into the hallway, looking around. Where'd that bloody kangaroo go?]
mincingminuet: (Hold Me)

[personal profile] mincingminuet 2017-08-09 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
[She snorts and follows, staff in hand, ready to move on out.]

Well, be careful. [There's still fighting, after all.]

Last I remember seeing, he was bouncing along at your left. Did you shut him out?
