SEMI-CLOSED ♞ CAR CRASHES AND SLEEP DEPRIVATION

WHAT: Souji is severely sleep deprived because of Bad Memories and New Powers so comes disaster

Since the beginning of the month, Souji has been getting some... unpleasant memories, to say the least. Memories that made him feel uncomfortable and isolated, but it was nothing that he couldn't really handle. A few sleepless nights weren't anything new and he has been good enough at trying to reassure those who've noticed (Ardyn, Tatsuma, Shin, to name just a few...) that everything was just fine. Everyone has a bad night or two where they just can't sleep, right? Souji is just having some of those right now so it's nothing severe or anything to worry about.

But then those regains came and everything went to total hell.

In between having difficulties falling asleep and pushing himself to master his newest Persona (something that drains him of energy every single he uses it), Souji hasn't been well-rested for the past week and a half. To say the least, he's suffering from a severe case of sleep deprivation and it shows through his behaviour and just his overall look (he tries to be well-groomed and dress properly but that doesn't hide the bags under his eyes). Throughout the city, he can be seen doing any of the following:

i) Falling asleep on the bus. Anyone with a keen eye or an attentive mind would notice that he's been sleeping on this bus for multiple stops and he doesn't seem like he's going to get up anytime soon. Plus, if the bus goes out of service or is at its final stop? He still doesn't seem like he's going to wake up. He just slouches in his seat and sleeps away.

ii) Walking down the street and occasionally bobbing his head up and down as he tries to stay awake. He accidentally bumps into poles and people as he walks. He immediately apologises without even looking at what or who he walked into so here's a guy just apologising to a pole. Yeah, he's really tired.

iii) Recognise him and try to call out to get his attention? Nope. He wouldn't even notice. He'll just keep on walking by. He's going to need to be called out a few more times or physically stopped before he notices anything.

The other problem with being this sleep deprived is that you don't take in your surroundings as well as you used to. Asides from bumping into pedestrians or falling asleep on the public, there is also the chance that you might not even notice that the street you were crossing had their traffic lights change. Add that with some distracted drivers and you have a bad case of everything going wrong at once.

i) He walks into traffic but can get pulled back right in the nick of time. There is some honking and yelling about how he should watch where he's going but there doesn't seem to be a lot of trouble for this one.

ii) He walks into traffic and he's too far out to be pulled back so he can only be pushed. For those who are willing to Die For Souji, this is your chance. Hopefully, you aren't expecting the car that hit you to stick around, though, because the moment there's an impact, that driver is speeding off.

iii) He walks into traffic and actually gets hit by a car. Luckily, it wasn't going very fast so there isn't a big crash but it is still enough to push Souji down and fall onto the road. Again, this driver doesn't plan on sticking around and drives off, leaving Souji to deal with some really nasty bruises. Hope you aren't expecting to do anything for the next immediate while.

iv) He may or may not have been involved in an accident but word travels fast so chances are that you might have heard about it. Heck, you might have even witnessed it because couldn't do anything in all the chaos that was going on. Whichever it is, you just know that whatever happened wasn't good.

[ Truthfully, no, it hasn't sunk in just yet that he might have died if Mako didn't come to save him. Everything is just tired and a blur, and he wishes he can just get by like some superhuman where he doesn't have to worry anyone and take on everything by himself. But alas, he's just a normal human being trying to survive on a few hours of sleep for an entire week. ]

No, thank you, I'll just... I'll find a way home.

[ And possibly get hit by a car this time? ]

And... thank you for earlier. For pulling me out of that.

[Does he trust what he says? That's the real question. Mako's gut says that he should take him home, and fast. But he also-- still isn't sure that it's his place. Maybe as a police officer, but his boss would tell him to call him a cab and be done with it. But screw his boss.]

Hey. Do you even know who you're talking to?

[He hasn't acknowledged him verbally-- Mako's not even sure he's registered. Maybe it's the police uniform, maybe not. But he's gonna try to... tease out how aware he is before he agrees to let him go anywhere.]

[ Don't try to use rhetorical questions on him while he's this exhausted, Mako because he's just going to answer them literally. ]

I'm... talking to Mako?

[ See how tired he is? It's definitely not a freak accident that Souji nearly got hit by a car. He really is just this dazed and out of it. ]

[An answer. Mako sighs, placing a hand on his shoulder, in part to stop him from wandering off again. He didn't want to manhandle him into a car, though he still seemed way too dazed to focus on trying to get away. He glances over at the police car, and then back to Souji.]

And I'm insisting you let me give you a ride.

[he looks him dead in the eye, his stare pretty intense. He's not brooking much in the way of an argument, here. He wants to know what happened, but first..]

C'mon. You can tell me your address in the car.

[ Souji's only known Mako for a short period of time but during that time, he feels like he has a good enough handle on Mako's character to know that there's no way he can budge out of this situation. ]

All right... I'm sorry for all the trouble.

[ Apologizes are his go-to response to everything but it seems kind of... pathetic and sad coming from someone who looks like a dazed and lost little kid. ]

Don't worry about it.

[regardless of how ridiculous they looked, Mako wasn't going to push. Whatever happened, must have been big. At least, it must have for the change in demeanor.

He starts to guide him towards the police car.]

Just make sure you give me your address, alright?

[ This is perhaps the first time that he realizes that Mako is an officer and while he does walk over to the car and nods to Mako's question, he begins to worry about one thing. ]

... Do you have to write up an incident ticket?

[ He knows that nothing exactly happened but he has to ask. ]

For this? No.

[he holds open the passenger seat door for him. Normally, it's against protocol to let people ride up front. But... he trusts Souji. And he's not going to make him ride in the back like he's in trouble.]

Your secret is safe with me.

[at that, he walks around to the driver's side, a opens the door.]

But don't make yourself sound anymore suspicious.

[ Souji gets into the front seat and rather than relaxing into the chair, he sits up tense and rigid as if he's afraid that if he does sink down into the seat, he'll immediately fall asleep. ]

Thanks...

[ And he just falls into a silence. He just looks... so tired and exhausted, not just from a lack of sleep but through everything else affecting him right now. So, well, if Mako wants to ask any questions, this is probably his chance. ]

[He was hoping he'd take a moment to rest his eyes, though. Mako glances over at him, making a mental note about all the questions he had going into this. But the most important one:]

What's your address?

[he presses the navigation system to get it started. The last thing he wanted was Souji trying to focus on direction giving. It would be bad for both of them.]

... And relax, okay?

[ Souji will tell Mako his address which is by some dorms by the local Recolle High School. He and Yu need to move out to a new place soon but who knows how well that's going to go after all this... ]

I'll relax when I get home.

[ That comes out a little more adamant and snappy than he wanted so he pauses and shakes his head. ]

... I'm sorry. I just don't feel like sleeping right now.

[that's punched in-- and they're off. Getting out of the square is pretty easy when he can just flash the lights for a moment to get out of there-- something he abuses for a moment.

He places his elbow against the door, and leans his head against his hand.]

You don't look like you've felt like sleeping for days now. That, or something just... came crashing down.

[ And the terrible thing is that both have hit down on Souji. Even before all those soul-crushing memories of Nanako came back, he wasn't sleeping properly at night and it's only after he regained all those memories, that's when things got worse. ]

[ Souji leans his head against the window, just watching the cars and buildings they pass by, not looking at Mako. ]

... I've only been sleeping for an hour or two each night. I... can't fall asleep.

[ That's all he'll admit right now. The other stuff is a bit too much for him. ]

[if this were normal, he'd tell Souji about this creepy story he read online about sleep experiments. As it is, this didn't... really help. There are a couple of things he could think of that might cause something like this. And... it's probably none of his business.

Maybe later, he could ask him.]

If you're hit by insomnia, don't make it worse by taking long walks or doing any sort of strenuous exercise.

[it's advice. he's not questioning that something like that could happen.]

It's... really not good for you. Obviously.

[ And if it was any other situation, they could have joked around with some other conspiracy theories or anything insane like that but now is neither the time or the place for that. ]

No, I... [ And he sighs. ] I thought it could clear my head. And I could get groceries at the same time.

[ Better than being cooped up inside all day and being reminded that he let both his brother in this world down along with his sister in his past life/world/memories/whatever. ]

So much for groceries.

[he muses aloud, and then glances over once more.]

Look. If you can't fall asleep normally, it's fine... stuff like that happens sometimes. But... I'd like to think you could relax for a few minutes before we get back to your place.

[the please is unspoken. This is about as mild as he can get, with criticism]

[ The please is unspoken but Souji hears it loud and clear. He still feels bad for snapping at Mako earlier and he's afraid that maybe he'll snap again, so he'll listen to Mako on this and attempt to get some sort of rest. ]

... I'll try.

[ He shifts in his seat, trying to get into a little more comfortable position but before he tries to doze off, he'll finally look at Mako. ]
