WHERE: the park in front of a makeshift screen for a borrowed projector
WHEN: later in the evening on wednesday when it is dark enough to be fun
WHAT: showing off monster videos for fun and zero profit
WARNINGS: stupidity probably

[ so dave mentioned the screening on the last group mingle retrospec post, but also will have done a handwaved post with further details and times just publicly for whoever. there is popcorn and people were advised to bring snacks if they wanted like a party. dave...supplies popcorn. and soda. that is about it. though there are blankets to sit on??

anyway there's a screen set up which is makeshift and possibly involves a sheet and a projector definitely borrowed from a school hooked up to his laptop. dave will be playing any films people hand over or any youtube videos requested. maybe an actual movie will make it into the queue, who knows. this will go until probably it gets late and/or he gets bored. it's summer and it's a distraction ok. feel free to do whatever. i'm good at this.

THE ROAD NOT KRAKEN dave why

[ so, the film dave is showing off for some godforsaken reason is The Road Not Kraken (starring emil västerström). it is...definitely Extra for a film shot at the beach with his handheld video camera? there are like, scenic atmospheric shots and special effects and a goddamn soundtrack, which seems to be full of original compositions. it's like someone spent every waking hour on it for weeks, which should be impossible given it was shot literally the other week.

there are previews? like. one is for "alien influenza" and seems to involve silver asking to be taken to someone's leader (...at the pizza part, in a duct tape alien uniform with a glowing firefly jar at his chest) with super dramatic musical cues. another is for "daylight saving crime" which involves some kind of spy thriller on a badly shot phone video with lots of sidewalk chalk drawings, including a still shot of an outline of some dude who died in the middle of catching a gnarly wave. he appears to be in space, doing a shaka sign. thanks, whoever the hell.

the film starts out with a hopeful kraken trying to take over the city with benevolent totalitarianism. he runs for mayor. however, he is run off by a cast of do-gooder kids who dance and sing in tandem. not...very well, mind, but those damn meddling kids. there are also some weird shots representing capitalism and emil looking dramatic and emotional as he goes Full Evil. this is represented by more and more seaweed accumulating on him, for some reason?

the scene where emil wrecks the gothic-horror / muk looking castle larger than him is highly dramatic. there is shouting? "I just wanted to bring good things and peace to this city... With totalitarian dictatorship! They will see the error of their ways!" he is attacked by citizen-children with pool noodle weaponry. "Your puny town will be reduced to ashes!" and as he punches the castle to bits... "EL-EM-AY-OH! You can't stop me now!" when the kids take him down at long last, his final words are "No, not.... Capitalism!" the final shot is on emil returning to the sea...never to return...

what the fuck did emil and dave do all day, back then...but anyway.

at the end the credits actually list out emil's name in bold and comic sans and then all the random npcs who consented to this nonsense. ]

( things Yuri counts himself grateful for: in part, not being raised in a fractious period of Russian history (one of many, like any long lived nation sees). but it does make the Not Capitalism carry a note of amusement. of course. capitalism knocking out the totalitarian dictatorships. not like rigged elections couldn't produce something similar in a capitalist empire, right? (ignore him.) )

the fast and the infuriated 8: fate of the furies

( a popular franchise in and of its own right, the eight installment of the fast and the infuriated brings out car-racing fam known from the other films while they've been moving into a life without crime. their leader, Dominck, has been blackmailed into participating in another race on the less than legal side of things...

... against the clock...

... to prevent a cyberterrorist with links to Grecian Mythology from setting off a chain reaction of nuclear wars to bring about a very unfortunate state of being to the world.

his favourite part is when they're racing down by the rivers of hades, having to evade the chase by a three headed dog and various other figures out of Greek mythology at one point or another. there's a tense moment where it seems Dom has just driven through the river Lethe, emerging with no memory of his fam, only to have it turn into a bait and switch as they take down the cyberterrorist through a twist of the Fates.

no one said this movie had to make sense.

Yuri has been grinning and cheering for various parts of this film, looking very pleased with himself by the end. YOU CANT'T TAKE HIS SILLY ACTION FEST MOVIES AWAY FROM HIM, WORLD?!

anyway he's p sure cerberus and the minotaur and the rest for all the hades chase scenes are perfect monster movie additions, somehow )

( okay, which is debatable, but as they cut a diagonal across the landscape, centaurs rounding the far curve of the Styx, Cerberus is keeping pace on the opposite bank, howling. )

[Good. Now that Yuri, the person who seemed most invested in this movie, is also yelling at it, the floodgates are open for Tuuri to do commentary of her own without pissing anybody off.]

( here lies the conundrum: Yuri knows the answers to these questions. but he's also a dedicated watcher, caught up in the moment, not concerned with petty details such as repeat movie viewings. he leans forward, one hand firmly planted on the ground, gesturing at the screen. )

[ while dave hangs out near the laptop/projector for most of the evening (until he gets bored enough to retire, but he seems to have. infinite time on his hands for some reason) he doesn't seem to mind speaking to people. he's looking markedly more Alive than he has for the past two weeks or so, although no less exhausted. the film he put in was the road not kraken, god save everyone.

for the most part he'll just chill and queue up anything people want, while idly streamlining soda after soda. he does have a small bowl of popcorn for himself, but he eats it a kernel at a time, slowly.

anyway, if you approach he will give you a Nod and either chat or just help out. what's up. as usual despite the summer heat he's in a long-sleeved shirt and jeans, and despite the hour he's in shades. why. ]
