semi-open || cowgirls need not apply

WHO: Dreadful Women's Adventure Club
WHERE: Churchill Downs Riding School and Stables
WHEN: Backdated to July 9th
WHAT: July's DWAC adventure is chocobo riding! Please sign up here to join the club if you haven't already!
WARNINGS: I apologize in advance if some of these horse riding terms are wrong ahaha.

[Those bingo cards sure have gotten everyone in a tizzy! Minako has to admit that it's a surprisingly nice game, though, despite where it'd come from, and decides to move the DWAC date up by two weeks to help anyone who needs the 'chocobo race' tile filled-- including herself, of course.

Saddle up, ladies, it's time to ride.]

STABLES

[Time to pick your partner! The stable have a variety of docile sunshine yellow chocobos used for beginner riding lessons. Well, they're supposed to be docile. The stables can't help you if the one you pick decides that you're looking at it funny and starts pecking at you. Or tries bucking you off while you get into the saddle. Or just decides to be ornery in general.

Good luck?

The stable has two prized black chocobos too, the proud parents of a little baby chick that likes to somehow squeeze out of her pen and wander around the barn. Maybe you can help the stablemaster herd her back to her parents. And don't you dare think of stealing her.]

MANEGE

[The area outside the stables is wide and spacious, but not quite used to accommodating groups of riders larger than five or six. The ladies might have to take turns going out with their chocobos. But don't worry, Minako arranged for a picnic lunch to be delivered, full of 'cowgirl' foods like pulled pork sandwiches, cornbread, chili, twice baked potatoes, and peach cobbler for dessert. The little black chocobo chick is wandering around too, so anyone waiting won't stay bored.

The trainers will be out with the riders, guiding them through basic gaits and even some obstacle jumps once they get the actual stop and go part down. Did your chocobo stop being ornery? Probably not, huh. Don't be too startled when your chocobo jumps at the sight of a random but h u g e bug in the grass, and be careful of not digging too hard into your chocobo's sides, too. They don't like that very much.

Once the trainers have deemed everyone one knowledgeable enough to continue on their own, they move to a different area to keep watch over the group. Now you can ride however you'd like! Which means it's the perfect time to take care of that bingo tile, of course. Who will throw down the gauntlet first?]

You're—

[What. Why? When did this happen? Lucy bristled, hands curling into fists.]

I was here first!

[Well, sort of. Not by very long though. The majority of things the DWAC did didn't interest her significantly, but they weren't terrible either. And Minako was here.]

Wait, you're also a member? [There's a duality she's seeing in that. On one hand, she's not against the idea of having more contact with her sister. On the other hand, her sister evidently had very different ideas. Katherine's eyes flicker for a second, noticing the change in the other's body language and clear shock at her membership.]

I had no idea you were so close by. [Really, what were the odds of this happening?]

Did I stutter?!

[Or not say so directly, that too.

Suddenly that lukewarm feeling about the club switched to a jealous possessiveness.

I'm not leaving because you're here!

Lucy, what are you talking about?

[There's concern in her voice, along with confusion from trying to figure out what she means. Guilt is starting to bubble up in her again, because she knows that her sister's agitation is because of her.]

What does me being here have to do with you leaving? I'm not here to kick you out or anything. I'm just here to have fun like everyone else. [She already has a feeling she's hitting a nerve just by being here: Its the sort of instinct you get working as a counsellor for young adults. And she knows how bad it can be to hit a nerve.]

That, just--

[The more she thought about that, the more it fell apart.

Lucy's shoulders were still as stiff as before and her expression was still an agitated grimace, but she broke eye contact with Katherine.

There's a small but very loud wark from down the corridor; the chick was back, staying in place and pawing at the ground. Playing tag was no fun if no one was chasing it!

Lucy...

[She frowns as her sister drops eye contact, a tired and somewhat sad sigh escaping her lips. There's the guilt again, that she had been the one to bring distress to her sister. Again....Dammit, she can't dwell on this now!]

Look, Lucy, [She pulls herself up off the ground, then slowly makes her way towards her sister.] I'm sorry if me being here...upsets you, in some way. I know there's probably a lot bothering you because of it. [God knows its weighing on her as well.

Finally when she's close enough, she bends over and offers her hand.]
But I'm not here to do anything wrong by you.

[She knows fully well that Lucy might just slap it away or dodge back like the last time, but she's reaching out anyways.]

Interfering chocobo

[personal profile] long_live_the_queen 2017-07-24 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
What.

[Lucy snapped, before Katherine even finished saying her name. She listened afterwards, but the sullen look didn't leave her face.

...maybe it was true. Maybe she shouldn't be like this. Lucy could see her sister again, talk to her again--there was no one to tell her she couldn't follow, to tell her Lucy had to leave. She should be happy. She should talk to her sister more.

But festered wounds didn't behave as they should, and it wasn't something easily bandaged over. It had been so long Katherine had blurred into the same antagonistic mass of people that abandoned her and threw her away, who took her out of houses she was just starting to call homes.

Lucy shrank back from the offered hand, but didn't recoil as violently or take a single step backwards. It was hard enough to will herself not to react; some little twitches snuck through anyway. Accepting apologies was difficult for her even under normal circumstances, let alone this. She hesitated, only briefly and awkwardly looking at Katherine.

She was trying not to react. She wasn't lashing out. Wasn't that good enough?

Lucy didn't take her sister's hand.
]

...what do you want, then?

[Her voice was marginally quieter and slightly less hostile.]
totallynotanoni: (#20)

Seriously, Chocobo's do not like Katherine.

[personal profile] totallynotanoni 2017-07-24 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
[Well, it was worth a try anyways. She lets out a sigh she didn't know she was holding in,

The question still stands, though: What does she want? In the long-run, she wants this to work out. She wants to be able to make up for lost time and finally be a sister. Its the idea she's been thinking of for so long now that she really doesn't know how to act now that the possibility is before her.

But right now, what does she want right now? She actually didn't think of this earlier, and right now it felt like they were in a bit of an awkward position. Speaking of that, wasn't]

I...I guess I just want to talk right now. Its not every day you run into someone you haven't seen in such a long time. [She pauses to consider that, then moves to edit herself.] Of course if your busy then I totally understand if your busy or something like that. [And a tiny bit of awkward backpedalling.]

[This time, Lucy didn't run away. She was chasing that chocobo before, but since it was impatiently waiting for them that didn't take as high of a priority anymore.]

What's there to talk about? You left.

[The blunt response hurts a little, especially when it feels accurate: she did leave, and left her little sister behind. Dammit that still gets to her.

Letting out a sigh, she shoots one last death glare at the baby chocobo, before returning her look to Lucy.]

Lucy-[She begins, but there aren't any words that come to mind immediately. Can you please get back up, first? I don't feel comfortable with you sitting down with whatever the chocobos have been walking around in.

[She sighs, leaning against the near wall and rubbing the shoulder Lucy jetted into.] Yeah, I did leave. [She left her little sister behind.] But I want you to know that there was a lot more to it than that. Mom wasn't in the best mental state at the time and I didn't know [Though she had definitely been uncertain of the chances, even if she held out hope for a long time.] that you wouldn't be coming back with me. I thought because of all the complications your part of the situation had, you would be back a little bit later but [Her hand clenches around an empty sleeve. She really should have known better.] you never did.

[personal profile] long_live_the_queen 2017-07-26 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
[At first, Lucy didn't respond.

But this...her stubbornness wasn't enough to cover this too. Stiffly, and grudgingly, she stood out of the dirt and concrete.

And she listened. And frowned, and shook her head in some places, but listened.

Even more than her sister, Lucy's mother was an antagonistic thing, something faceless and hateful. The reason she didn't have a home in the first place. It was something easy to hate, and something she didn't need—want—to think about.

Lucy's memory of the events before she was separated from her sister were hazy, half-remembered things; being with Katherine all too briefly, being separated with no one and nowhere to hide from bullies anymore, the time she snapped under the pressure.

It was one of the few things she remembered with clarity. Going after one of her bullies with her fists, the number of shouting, angry, frightened adults—the warped satisfaction that came from finally finding something that'd get her listened to.

Katherine was never a part of that. Her mother was never a part of that. But seeing her sister clutch at her empty sleeve made something in Lucy's chest twist.

[She shakes her head in response, knowing fully well who she is.]

Back in San Francisco. Never really left. [She's...not sure how she feels about her mother anymore. She still cares for her and loves her, but there was a divide between them, one that had taken many years of stupidity and denial to create.

If there was a word she had used to describe her mother in her more recent thoughts, it was broken. Broken by being abandoned by her husband, left to raise a daughter and having to deal with another one on the way, forced to bare the burden of a child's life-changing injury and a lack of finances, forced to watch as her good intentions (albeit questionable ones) blow up in her face and cost her more than she intended, forced to deal with seeing part of the reason walking around her home, then to have that same reminder grow to antagonize her and-

She stops herself, realizing that she's gone rigid and her hand is hurting from squeezing the empty sleeve. She takes a breath, and straightens herself. Not now, Katherine, not now.]

Our Mother, she had a rough time dealing with everything happening around her. It was a lot of pressure for a single person to take and she..well, she suffered lapses in judgement. [There's a sad, guilty look on her face now, not ready to admit to just how deep her mother and herself had been in despondence.]

[The long silence had allowed pressure to build back up again. Lucy snapped, harsh and angry again.]

Why are you making excuses for her?!

[The guilt on her sister's face made that wrenching feeling in her chest worse.

...the hypocrisy wasn't lost on Lucy either. So much of that could apply to Lucy, too, and that her life even slightly mirrored that of someone she never met and even hated so much was...upsetting.

[She jolts a little with the comment, obviously jolted out of her thoughts. ]

I'm not making excuses for her; thats her job to do. [She actually raises her voice a little, not in an angry fashion, but more in a defensive, countering manner. Even a slight tinge of bitterness. Though Lucy is right to some extent: Kath is sort of making excuses for why she should hate herself her mother is less at fault here.] I don't, and never have, agreed with the decisions she made, but I understand she had her reasons. They weren't the best or most thought-out reasons, but I understood why she had them and how they affected her. [She sort of had to. It made blaming herself easier.]

[Lucy broke eye contact again, shifting her weight back on her heels. She understood, in an oblique way, but...didn't want to understand. Lucy wasn't like her mother. Her mother wasn't like her. except in the exact ways she was.

Lucy shifted back half a step, shaking her head still.

Ok, thats fine. [An understanding look comes across her face. Yeah, she's totally ok with that. Thinking about her mother isn't exactly easy for her, either.

She's silent for a - Maybe its a good time for her to ask a question.]

...Lucy, I know I probably asked you something like this last time, but I feel like I just need to say it... [She's actually dreaded the answer to this one, because she has a feeling she knows what it is.

Its obvious life hasn't been easy on Lucy, the attitude is enough to tell that from. Psychology had taught her to figure these things out, and empathy made it all the easier to understand. Here her sister was, affected by who knows what turmoil over the years, much like herself. The difference was, Katherine had willingly sought these things out, as some sort of escape, while her sister possibly had no control over much what happened to her. Its a rather somber thought.]

...Where have you been all these years? [Before the orphanage shut down, Katherine and her mother at least had an idea of where Lucy was located. But then, when the incident occurred and the orphanage was shut down, Lucy and every possible way of getting her back had slipped away into the system. Her sister seemingly went under their radar, and disappeared altogether. Whether it was too a new home or through the foster system (both possibilities had drawbacks Katherine was very aware of.) they had had no idea where she was.]

...away.

[Her past was always something she had difficulty sharing. Most of the time people didn't care, or care to ask. Cops only wanted to hear how many noses she'd broken or tires slashed. Social workers knew already.

...some people here were different, though.
