FEBRUARY EVENT LOG

EVENT
FOUNDER'S DAY
It's finally here. This is the day the city has been waiting for. It's a day like no other when every resident of Recollé can be found buzzing with energy and excitement. Shops open early. The Recollé High School and University marching bands begin to play, and over in Tribunal Terrace Mayor Mayer strides up to the microphone atop his beloved giant chicken, Seabiscuit.

--wait, giant chicken? You're sure the Mayor has something important to say, but all you can do is focus on the fact that Seabiscuit didn't have bright red feathers the day before. The rest of the Mayor's speech may not get through to you, but it's his last sentence that makes everything official.

"Welcome to Founder's Day! Let's do our part and celebrate the city that we love."

I.
All of the hard work from the days prior has paid off. The weather is slightly brisk with no chance of snowfall until well into the evening and businesses are booming. Shopkeepers and employees working today will have their hands full taking orders from customers and keeping up with demands. Maybe that 50% off deal on wool-knit scarves wasn't such a great idea. On the other hand, residents that aren't working today will find the streets pleasantly busy. Chata has plenty of sidewalk sales to peruse. Music and the scent of cinnamon-sweet coffee will surely lure some people to the businesses in Tisse. School is closed for the day but an open campus tour runs a few times a day at the university, and the Founder's Day play is performed once in the morning and once in the evening at the Atrium.

Are you enjoying a day with your friends? Or are you stuck behind a register wishing you were? Wherever you may be, the spirit of Founder's Day is all around you.

II.
At noon sharp, the bands strikes up again as crowds gather around Tribunal Terrace. Ladies and gentlemen, it's time for the main attraction! That's right, it's time for the annual Founder's Day Parade featuring the city's newly elected royalty: King Kurt Wagner, Queen Maya Aimoto, Prince Ryoji Mochizuki, Princess Rose Strider, Duke Viktor Nikiforov, and Duchess Arlene Sinclair. The marching bands play with gusto as they stride through the streets, the Recollé High and Recollé University cheerleaders right behind them. Beautiful floats follow in their wake, all decorated with flowers and depicting the historical events of the city. One thing that's different this year, however, is the addition of beads from the King and Queen's float at the end of the parade. The Recollé Royalty's float-helpers sit on the edge of the float tossing colored strands of beads and candy to the audience below. Most residents may not notice, but the beads seem to be shaped like a new logo some residents are quickly becoming familiar with.

Residents will find that wearing the beads will produce some interesting results though. Are you on a romantic date? Your beads might slowly turn red with passion. Are you nervous about one of those floats suddenly veering off and rolling down the hill? Your beads might turn pitch black. No matter what district you're in after the parade these beads will respond to your current mood, and even if you take them off they seem to mysteriously turn back up in your pocket. If you take them off and try to get rid of them often enough, they might just appear around your neck, and you won't be able to remove them for the rest of the day. Then again, this doesn't seem to be a rule so much as a pattern. Perhaps you'll be lucky enough to ditch the beads to your pocket instead of having them prominently displayed no matter how many times you do away with them. Talk about wearing your heart on your sleeve. What's up with that?

The beads may not be everyone's first priority. After all, once the parade's said and done someone has to be on clean-up duty. Will you volunteer?

III.
Later, back at Tribunal Terrace, residents who passed by a large metal truck earlier in the week will quickly see what all of the fuss was about as Mayor Mayer walks Seabiscuit down the street, monitoring over a small, gated pen for Chocobo-back rides. You know the Mayor used to own a horse. Seabiscuit has always been a beautiful Palamino with a shimmering coat. Asking most of the other residents, however, will earn you a concerned look. Recollé has always been home to Chocobos. What's a horse?

Nearby there's a petting zoo that has been set up by the same company. Thankfully, those animals look familiar. Goats, sheep, bunnies and other small animals reside in the petting zoo. Are you the type to feed them? Or are you stuck on pooper-scooper duty? Gross.

The Chocobos themselves seem friendly enough, though the little ones are prone to nipping at hair and fingers. Are you brave enough to get closer to take a better look at these mysterious creatures? Do try to be careful...especially since some of them are prone to running away and relocating themselves in other parts of the city. Seems like even the Chocobos want the Founder's Day special from Expressive.

IV.
Mayor Mayer, as good and true as he is, isn't one of the most careful people in the city of Recollé. It would make sense to keep Seabiscuit away from the city's pride and joy, the world's largest ball of red string. If you've been in Recollé for any length of time, you'll immediately recognize the ball. Large enough to see from any district, the ball has been wound and displayed near City Hall for years.

Too bad Seabiscuit isn't one for tradition and this creature does startle easily. It's hard to say what caused the poor thing to become so scared that it kicked the ball right off of its pedestal, but once it starts rolling there's no stopping it. The red ball of string picks up pace, rolling down the streets and unraveling to tangle up anyone in its path.

The string winds its way around the city and all districts, seemingly pulling people in and tying them up with at least one other person. It seems that the only way to undo this mayhem is to find your other half and work together to unravel yourselves.

BONUS.
You don't remember that building in Tisse being there. Was it there before? Perhaps it was empty in the days prior to Founder's Day, but today a small neon sign illuminates the front of the building with the name of its current business.

Retrospec. Huh. Isn't that the name of that app that installed itself on your mobile device? As you've noticed by now, all aspects of the app are available to use. But there's still something ominous about that building. If you're brave enough to go inside, you'll find…

…nothing. The building appears to be empty save for a few chairs in a waiting room-type area and a large fake potted plant in the corner. There appears to be several doors and even an elevator, but it seems no matter how hard you try you can't access any of those. What a waste of time. (And why isn't there a staircase?) There's really no point in staying here when the festival's outside waiting for you. When you try to open the front door to exit though it appears to have locked behind you. Are you alone? Hopefully you aren't alone, that would be quite dreadful.

Of course, you can try a few things to break out. You can try ramming down the door for example. That won't work, but you may certainly try. Though the city is full of creative people with undoubtedly interesting methods of breaking free, residents locked inside Retrospec will find that the only way to open the door is by using the Retrospec app to post a status update, comment to someone else's status, or post a picture from their Founder's Day adventures. Is there a right or wrong way to do this? That's for you to find out. Time to get creative and maybe make a few new friends!

Welcome to [community profile] recolle's February event! As a reminder, all characters will be begin in-game AU'd as Recollé residents. As with our TDM, you may use any of the above prompts for ideas or make up your own depicting your Recollé AU! Prompts do not have to be set in the districts listed above. You can review our list of locations for what's available and be as creative as you'd like.

As a note, the effects from the beads in the second prompt can last throughout the month if you would like, but will fade as soon as February is over. Additionally, you may post Retrospec updates in your top-levels on this log for the bonus prompt if you wish to keep everything in one place.

As another note, by participating in this log in a thread with five or more comments from you, you are eligible for one free memory regain! This means you can claim a memory without a trigger required. Please see our monthly plotting post for more details.

Any questions you have regarding this event may be directed to the mod comment here.

III- Mambo de chocobo

[After the mayor's speech, Iris just had to check out these giant chickens for herself. She stopped asking about them after the first couple of people thought she was crazy. She's a little concerned about her own horse. I he a bird? Will he still remember her? Can she still ride him? This is all super weird.

Although... up close they're sort of cute. She's leaning against the fence around the chocobo rides. The little kids seem to like this as much as pony rides at least. Good for them. Still... she turns to the nearest person who also looks confused. Maybe you.]

Okay, so level with me. Are the birds new? Or am I crazy?

I- coffee break

[Late in the afternoon, Iris can be found taking a break from the festivities. She's seated at a corner table in Expressive, with various shopping bags at her feet, sipping a latte and reading. Every now and then she stops and marks something with a highlighter. Could she actually be doing homework on a holiday?

Nah. Sharp eyed onlookers will notice that she's reading a script. A soon to be shot episode of 'A Song of Crystals and Daemons.' Bother her?]

I have never seen a creature like them in my life.

[The voice was a little high pitched, soft, and carried a french accent to it. A dark haired, short girl was staring at the same creatures that she was looking at with a similar level of curiosity, her gaze marveling at them. At first, she'd thought they were ostriches.

That had lasted until a green one passed by, making a 'Kweh' sound as children rode it with glee. No, that was definitely not an ostrich, definitely not.]

Are they perhaps from Africa somewhere, imported for this event?
borntoolate: (not buying that)

Re: 3

[personal profile] borntoolate 2017-02-04 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
No such luck.

[She shakes her head, and pulls her phone out of her pocket.]

Check this out.

[Iris brings up a photo of herself, maybe a year or two younger, riding a sleek black chocobo.]

true_noir: (Cloak20)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-02-04 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, how very lovely! So, you've seen them bef...no, no, you were saying they were new.

How is it that you are in a photo with one? [Cue her being legitimately confused.] Was this taken today? No, you look younger. I do not understand?
borntoolate: (what's going on down there?)

[personal profile] borntoolate 2017-02-04 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Me either. Because this...

[She gesture at the picture.]

Used to be a picture of me with my horse.
true_noir: (Ummmm...?)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-02-04 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
... that is not a horse. You are, what is the phrase, pulling my leg? Horses do not look like this at all. [She frowned.] Or, did someone ... no, how would someone steal your picture from your wallet, replace it and make everyone...

This is all too elaborate to be a prank. If you are joking at my expense, it is not funny. It is just strange.
borntoolate: (frustrated)

[personal profile] borntoolate 2017-02-04 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Believe me, this is no joke and I'm not laughing. This picture was different yesterday.

It was taken just over a year ago, and Night Sky used to be a horse.
true_noir: (Cloak9)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-02-04 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
... wait, we have spoken, yes? I remember your picture, I think? You are Iris, no?

[She frowned, the confusion mounting. They had been joking about the conspiracy nut earlier, hadn't they? She folded her arms, wondering if this was some sort of very serious attempt to prank, but she seemed serious. The suspicions, though, caused the beads she was wearing to shift between blue and black as she thought about it.]

Night Sky, it would still be a horse, yes? It is home, so you cannot go see it, as there are not stables, but if you were to call home, you would hear the whinny, no doubt.

[personal profile] browbeater 2017-02-03 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
[This was his chance to enjoy the festival. And he was buried in an old jacket, and an older hoodie. He preferred his uniform, because that was newer. It was thicker. All taken together, it was warmer. And he deeply regretted not grabbing coffee or something warm to drink as he wandered the festival. He was wearing some blue beads.

He looks over with her first sentence-- and then with her second.]

Oh, good, I'm not the only one talking crazy.

Re: iii.

[personal profile] borntoolate 2017-02-04 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
So you remember horses being like, a thing? Because a lot of people suddenly don't.

[She frowns an fold her arms over her chest.]

I mean, they're cute and all, but how does something like this even happen?
browbeater: Because I hate them for not asking me if I wanted starbucks. (Who ordered the pumpkin spice latte?)

[personal profile] browbeater 2017-02-04 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
[how did this happen was a great question, and one he wished he had an answer to. But he doesn't, and he offers a shrug in response. He focuses his look on the chocobos for a minute-- they were conspicuously strange colors. He wasn't even sure how they survived in the wild.

At least horses were, well, brown, most of the time.]

I don't know. But try explaining the concept of a horse to someone who has no clue what you're talking about.
borntoolate: (not buying that)

[personal profile] borntoolate 2017-02-04 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Tell me about it. I gave up after the first couple of minutes.

[She makes an expansive gesture at the crowd.]

How could thousands of people suddenly forget the existence of something so... basic?
browbeater: What, that's the look, right? (How you doin' sugar?)

[personal profile] browbeater 2017-02-04 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. [a stubborn sigh, and then he digs his hands a little further into his pockets. He's cold.]

But, honestly, I'm glad I caught you. I thought I was losing my mind for a minute there.

[another pause, and then he takes one of his hands out of his pockets to offer it to her-- for shaking]

I'm Mako.
borntoolate: (waiting)

[personal profile] borntoolate 2017-02-06 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Iris.

[She shakes his hand with a smile.]

I still haven't totally ruled that out yet. But it's nice to know that if I am losing my mind, I'm not alone.
browbeater: (Cool kid pose.)

[personal profile] browbeater 2017-02-07 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
There's probably a song about some sort of collective mental break.

[a pause]

That sort of thing doesn't just happen, though, right?

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-02-03 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Togusa's 'on duty' posture completely relaxes, and he looks at Iris with a little relief. "Oh thank you for saying something. If you're not crazy, I'm not crazy. What in the world?"

Togusa turns back to the birds, watching a tiny one trotting across the pen towards a kid with their hand out. "I mean, I'm not complaining, they're awfully cute. But where were they a few days ago?"

Togusa hesitates and looks at Iris for an extra second. Why does she look familiar? "Ah- Officer Togusa," although she probably spotted that from the uniform and badge. "...Have we met?"
borntoolate: (for you)

Re: III

[personal profile] borntoolate 2017-02-04 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
[Okay, she can't resist flashing him a wry smile.]

Well, we could both be crazy. But I kinda hope we're not.

[She turns back to the birds. She has to agree they're pretty cute. If that one gets a little closer maybe she could pet it too.]

Iris Amicitia. And no. I haven't done anything that bad yet.
standalonehuman: (TogusaUnsure)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-02-05 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"I-" Togusa holds up his hands and shakes his head. "No no, I didn't mean it like that. Just maybe I've seen you around my neighborhood or something." He can't quite place her.

Kweeh? The bird cautiously steps closer. Step. Step. It bobs its head as if to look closer at the people.

Togusa looks back at the bird. "I think it can tell we're talking about it."
borntoolate: (teehee)

[personal profile] borntoolate 2017-02-06 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kidding. I know what you meant.

[She doesn't bother elaborating. Honestly Iris isn't sure if it would be a little too braggy to keep telling people 'I'm on tv.' Especially when she's only appeared on one season of one show so far.]

Aw~ Hey there...

[She reaches out to pat the chocobo. It stretches its neck obligingly. So cute~]
standalonehuman: (TogusaHeadScratch)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-02-07 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Togusa can't help but smile, despite how very strange this all is. "I suppose they can't fly, unless they've all got their wings clipped?"

Kwe-kweh. "You can't possibly understand me, can you?" Togusa looks at the bird sideways, before turning his full attention back to Iris.

"But where could they have come from? I've got to trust my instinct and the idea that something else was here before, instead of what everybody else is telling me."
borntoolate: (pleasant)

[personal profile] borntoolate 2017-02-10 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Not that it wouldn't be the coolest thing if they could, but their wings look too small for that.

[Flying around on a giant bird sounds pretty awesome though. In response to his question, she shrugs.]

I remember horses too. Heck, I used to own one.

[ Noctis glances at Iris when she speaks up, waiting for her to speak her mind (...as well as... make sure she's actually talking to him). ]

...They're new. The mayor never had a red bird as his mount. [ Considering his love for animals, this is absolutely a detail he would not have missed prior.

Shifting his position, he leans down inside the fenced area to pick up a long leaf a lettuce and offer to one of the chocobos. It steps forward with a rather joyful sound before going for the kill at the heart of the lettuce leaf with its beak, wings flapping in enthusiasm in the process.
]

What happened to the horses, though?

[ yes, he may be more concerned the horses are missing rather than really concerned that most people don't even seem to think horses existed. Or maybe he's just not really thinking this completely through. ]
borntoolate: (sizing you up)

Re: iii.

[personal profile] borntoolate 2017-02-04 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I noticed that. What worries me is that a lot of people didn't.

[Aw, that's cute. Iris follows his lead, picking up a piece of lettuce to offer once the bird finishes it's current treat.

At his question, she gives him a sidelong glance and a shrug.]

Actually? I kinda think these are the horses. Or were the horses, I guess.
riviation: (pic#11014210)

[personal profile] riviation 2017-02-08 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Now that she mentions it... ]

So, as in: the horses weren't swapped but changed into these guys? ...Or... is mutated a better word here?

[ these birds are adorable and he already finds himself in love with them. But, horses were beautiful and to try and imagine them mutating from mammal to... ostrich-like-but-cuter bird mount is... the creepy stuff of Weird Science. ]

As... much as it sounds like "not a good sign" to have horses turning into large flightless birds, your idea makes a lot more sense than the horses all disappearing and being replaced overnight.

[ The chocobo at least seems quite happy with the attention it's getting from the two teenagers.

About her other mention... he hasn't really gone out of his way to ask anyone about why the horses are now suddenly chickens, but he has heard plenty of the others doing so. The answers aren't encouraging just as she suggests. It's clear that something is strange—it isn't as if only one or two of them remember horses being real and around the city just yesterday.
]

I just can't... [ he trails off in favor of exhaling before trying again: ] Sounds like a crazy SyFy original series plot. But, hey, have you ridden a horse before, by any chance?
borntoolate: (waiting)

[personal profile] borntoolate 2017-02-10 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Sure have! I own one, actually.

[She pauses then, and frowns.]

Well... I used to anyway. Now he's a giant bird like all the others.

[She fishes out her phone.]

Even my pictures of him have changed.
