[OPEN] Side Effects of Memories

WHEN: April 1st- 14th
WHAT: SIDE EFFECTS FROM GETTING A BUNCH OF MEMORIES!
WARNINGS: There is one prompt with Derek hearing voices. Don't choose that one if that's not your thing. Also Fire, a very emotional Derek, and watching Derek's own magic kick his butt. Derek might use magic on your character!

At the end of March, Derek was bombarded with so many memories of Draco, is took him a while to mentally sort through them all. Occasionally, he would notice weird side effects when he got memories before, but NOTHING like this. The first half of the month, seemed to be against him, no matter how hard he tried to cope.

I. April 1st-4th: Levicorpus! NEEDS TO BE WILLING TO HAVE MAGIC USED ON THEM!

Side Effect: For the first four times this spell is cast, Derek will also find himself hoisted into the air by his ankles


When Derek remembered Levicorpus he thought, "Well, this is a fun spell." That is... until he tried to use it. Of course he didn't know the consequences of his actions when he goes up to you and taps you on the shoulder, with a goofy grin on his face.

"Hey... I remembered a new spell and I kind of want to practice it. But I need someone to use it on. Could you spare... oh... fifteen minutes? Apparently, you're suppose to be hoisted up in the air by your ankle. And I know the counter jinx, so when you want down, I should be able to do it. What do you say?"

At least he is asking permission for this one? Improvement right?

II. April 1st-3rd: Writing with Fire!

Side Effect: Any time Derek draws anything on paper, it will have the same effect! This will last for three days.

This side effect Derek was not expecting. He got his first shock when he was signing some records at work and he noticed he had burned through the paper with his pen. And then the whole record caught on fire. He ended grabbing his morning cup of coffee and putting it out, destroying any papers on his desk. After apologizing to his boss (which he's not sure how he convinced him that "creating too much friction with his pen" was the reason) and many reprinting of the papers later, Derek resigned the paper and quickly blew out any flames. Hopefully they won't notice the scorch marks...

He had just about had it with anything he signed going up in flames. He is paying for his order at a cafe, when he has to sign the slip of paper for using his credit card. His mind is still processing what happened in the morning, that he forgets what happens when he signed something. He is sliding the slip of paper over when it bursts into flames and sets the counter on fire. The poor girl behind the counter was new and shrieks. Completely flustered, she grabs the nearest post of coffee next to hr and throws the contents on the fire. This results in Derek'd shirt being splattered in coffee. Fire alarms are going off and many people are looking at the incident.

Derek takes a step back and just... looks down at this ruined shirt. This is not his day.

"You've got to be kidding me..."

III. April 5th-10th: Just a pile of human flesh

Side Effect: For the next five spells, regardless of what they are, Derek will find himself falling to the ground in a heap.

Maybe his was summoning a book to himself off he shelf in the library, or maybe it was a record off of his desk. Perhaps he was simply using his wand as a source of light, or maybe he was casually levitating something, just to keep up the spell. Either way, if you see him wave his wand, the spells will happen, but then he will suddenly fall very ungracefully on his face.

Derek lets out a moan, as he tries to pick himself back up, but he fell pretty hard... please help him!

IV:April 1st-???: A Crippling Sense of Loss

Side Effect: Upon remembering this, Derek will feel an intense, almost crippling sense of loss that he can't quite pinpoint. This will disappear over time.

When Derek isn't having to deal with his magic going to shit, he's dealing with internal issues of the heart. He can't figure out why, but he has had this overwhelming sense of loss since the beginning of the month. The thing is, he hasn't lost anything recently. Not to his knowledge. That being said, it won't be uncommon to see him in the Three Broomsticks or at a cafe, tearing up into his drink and then ferociously trying to wipe the tears away.

"Ugh... what the hell is wrong with me?"

V:April 1st-7th: Need a Parent? [FOR CHARACTERS UNDER THE AGE OF 26]

Side Effect: Derek will begin to feel strong paternal feelings for anyone younger than himself that he speaks to. These feelings will last for several days (probably no more than a week.)

Something is wrong with Derek. Even he knows it. But he can't help himself. His heart just goes out to every single person who is younger than him. He has to watch over them, protect them, make sure they are OK, get them an ice cream Sunday if they need! Derek is slowly watching his wallet thin as this progresses. But he can't help himself. So if you are younger than 26, even by a little, Derek will have this urge to come up to you, place a gentle hand on your shoulder, and smile at you.

"Hey, how have you been? You've been doing alright? Do you need any help with anything?"

Out is the sarcasm and IN is the more gentle, concerned, and understanding parent like Derek no one is use to.

VI: April 8th-14th: Voices Everywhere! [Derek is hearing voices in his head]]

Side Effect: For the next week, Derek will hear the sound of voices in every direction alerting him to danger, even if it's very minor danger such as "your shoe is untied!" or "there's a car 50 feet away!" Little informative things like that, but all in the tone of something more drastic.

"YOU'RE SHOE IS UNTIED! YOU'LL DIE IF YOU DON'T TIE IT!

Derek whirls around to see where the voice has come from. Though it doesn't seem like anyone was talking to him. Some people gave him strange looks though. Why was this man suddenly whirling around? Derek looks down at his feet, and to his surprise, his shoe is untied. Derek slowly kneels down and ties his shoe. As he stands back up he hears another voice. A different voice.

"There's a car 50 feet away from you!"

Derek looks around, and 50 feet away from him, is a car, driving down the road, way out of the way from hitting him.

"What is the world?"

Derek crosses the street and picks up a newspaper from the vendor.

PAPER CUT!

[Derek about drops his paper and trips from the sudden out burst.]

ASPHALT AHEAD!

Derek catches himself with one hand and stands back up.

Derek is just going to stand still for a bit. Hoping the voices stop yelling at him... where ever they are coming from.

VII: April 8th-14th: Loosing Control [Derek might accidentally hit your character with a nasty spell]

Side effect: For the next week after he remembers this, whenever Derek casts a spell, he'll find that his body will be out of his control and his spells may go awry.

If Derek thought falling over when he cast a spell was bad, or being hoisted up in the air was annoying, this new side effect scared the shit out of him. It is early in the morning and his practicing various spell in the park. Open space, few people around. And the NPC's have learned to stay away from him when he has his wand out. Derek is levitating a log, when suddenly his arm goes stiff, the log drops and his arm is pointing is wand at the nearest person. Is it you? Derek's eyes fill with fear. Why can't he control his arm? Derek instantly recognizes this as the imperious curse. This can't be happening.

"G-Get..a-aw..a-wa.."

Derek is trying to tell the person to get away from him, but he can barely use his own voice. Before he can register what his happening, his voice speaks for him.

"Locomotor Wibbly!"

The spell his a tree not far from the person his was aiming at and part of the tree explodes. Suddenly Derek has the freedom to move again. Derek's legs instantly start running towards the person.

"I'M SO SORRY! Are you OK! I didn't hit you did I! I-I don't know what happened.!"

Derek is extremely flustered.

"I've never lost control like that before! I'm so sorry!"

VIII:April 8th-14th: GLASS [SEMI-CREATE YOUR OWN PROMPT]

Side Effect:Whenever Derek hears his own name for the next week, it will be followed by the sound of shattering glass.

Any time you see Derek during this week, and you call out to him, you will see him jump a bit. Not because you called out to him, but because every time he hears his voice, he hears the sound of shattering glass. It's a bit unnerving for him.

[When Derek looks up, Rinka will be standing there, sipping a coffee from a nearby cafe. She'd stepped out just in time to watch Derek get slammed to the ground by some invisible force... and wow had that been funny.]

[Derek is still in some pain, and painfully looks up from the ground when he is addressed. Oh, it's Rinka. Great. Perfect. Just who he needed to see him look like an idiot. Trying to act tough and not at all in pain, Derek painfully grins.]

Hello Rinka. How's your day going?

[As he says that, he is slowly, so very slowly, picking himself up off of the ground.]

It was pretty decent already. But, not gonna lie, it just got five times better.

[And then she drops the teasing tone, her expression showing some actual concern.]

What the hell happened to you? It looked like you got body slammed, but no one touched you.

Well, I'm glad I amuse you...

[Derek finally gets up off his ass and stands in front of Rinka, dusting himself off.]

No idea. I was casting a levitation charm to practice the spell and the next thing I knew, I was face planting into the ground. That is the complete opposite of what I was wanting to do.

Maybe... your spell backfired? Like you said, it was the opposite effect of what you were trying to do. Instead of lifting something, you can slammed down instead.

[Surely magic backfires. It seems like the sort of ability that could backfire, at least to Rinka.]

Maybe you should try levitating something again.

Or maybe I could try a different spell. Just to see if it was only the spell I was using and not my magic over all. How does that sound.

[Derek flicks his wand.]

Orchideous!

[A bouquet of daffodils shoot out of Derek's wand. And then he face plants into the ground again. He lands hard with a groan.]

Ugh... definitely my magic... shit.

[He's in a bit of pain, so he's just going to stay down for a bit OK?]

Yeah... and I think the spell didn't work properly either. Since those are daffodils and not orchids.

[Rinka picks up those bouquet though, because it'd be a shame to waste them.]

Though, they are very nice flowers.

[She looks down at Derek]

So I guess you're going to have to lay off the magic for a bit, huh?

[Derek raises himself up on his elbows. Progress. He shakes his head.]

The spell worked fine. It doesn't have to be orchids. It can be any flower. I meant for it to be daffodils. I just don't get why I suddenly fell..

[Derek slowly moves his legs and is finally able to kneel, sitting back on his feet. Derek looks up at Rinka holding the flowers.]

You like them? You can have them. I was just planning to toss them.

Huh. What kind of stuff have you remembered lately? Maybe it's linked to one of them.

[since most of the weird extra stuff that's happened to just her, she's more or less been able to link to a recent memory]

So that spell can make any flower? That's useful. Saves you money on Valentine's Day I bet. But yeah, daffodils are nice. Roses are overrated.

[Derek thinks for a moment.]

I got a spell that hoists someone up by their ankle, a duel, confronting an idiotic git at a train station... some dumb teacher screaming about a troll...

Pretty sure I didn't because Draco was eleven and told to go to his common room. Concerning the memories though... I just kind of get use to it. Getting that many at once is starting to be a regular occurrence.

[ This is definitely uncomfortable, and it shows in how Raina grimaces when she's suddenly touched. She isn't used to being touched like that - at least, not by people she barely even knows, so she immediately flinches and tries to brush the hand off her shoulder, grimacing. ]

Yes, I'm perfectly fine. Are you? You seem stressed. I'm a bit worried about you honestly. Is there anything I can do?

[ It's the genuine smile coupled with everything that comes after that concerns her just a little more. Not that she shows any of it on her expression, instead just smiling through it, even if it's a little strained. ] I'm. [...] I'm not stressed at all! And there's no need to worry about me. [ She was almost tempted to say "I'm not worth worrying about", but she's trying so hard to get out of that mindset. ] But there's really nothing I need or anything you can do... I mean, it'd be rude of me to take advantage of your kindness when I barely even know you.

Ah, but if there is the potential to take advantage of my kindness, that means there is something troubling you isn't there?

Something doesn't have to be troubling me in order to take advantage of people's kindness.

Oh, so you would take advantage of my kindness if you had the chance?

[This girl is making it hard for him to figure her out. OK, what buttons can he push?]

[ She huffs a little bit through her nose, sighing a little. ]

Of course not. That'd be cruel.

But what else would I be here for if not to give you help, advice, and wisdom? This is role. To help those younger than me that need help from one with more life experience.

What, so are you saying that your sole purpose in life is just simply to help others?

[ She's not buying it. ]

[It's about now that Derek starts to realize something is off... with himself. Why is he pushing this so much? He's not normally like this so why...?

He pauses for a moment before responding.]

It wouldn't be a bad purpose now would it?

[ She hesitates, just slight. ]

I think it would be kind of sad.

[Forget the irksome feeling he was getting, that last comment was just... you're kidding right?]

Then what do you call doctors, police officers, and any other people in the service industry? I don't think their lives are sad. Or how about parents whose purpose is to raise and help their children? What makes wanting to help people and making it a focus of my life so sad?
