EVENT
Re:Configure
Prologue.
It's on February 5th that every single Retrospec users receives a message from the liaison known as Zee Carlisle. Several of you have visited and expressed concerns already, but none of that mattered in the grande scheme of what needs to be said.

The thing about the city and the layers below is that the metaphysical can easily become the physical with the power you all possess. It's just a "handy" little trick that comes with intermingling soul essence. Thanks to my field agent, we've received some data that'll help advance our research to help track Vanderweele, stabilize the layers and figure out our next step.

The next step, of course, is going beyond.

You're not ready though. I know that, you're not, but I think I've figured out some workarounds. Just be careful and try to control yourselves. You'll need to embrace who you are and take the next step to protect yourselves.

It's not about finding keys anymore. It's about becoming them, generating the doors yourself and getting ready for things out there that're bound to be bad.

Keep balance in mind. And don't try to hide from what's happening. I'm not sure how this is going to manifest but this is all still you.

Well. That's not ominous, is it?
I.
Not long after the announcement, anyone looking in the sky will soon notice something strange happening. While the moon hangs peacefully in the night sky, the second moon that had appeared some months ago begins moving on its own, slowly beginning to eclipse the regular moon. As the two of them overlap one another, a soft blue light emits over the whole city and in your head you'll hear a faint animalistic cry. Some of you may hear the roar of a tiger while others hear the whinny of a horse and others hear the shrieking of a monkey. These sounds only last for a moment…and then there's silence. The moons split apart again and everything seems to go on as normal.

The next day on the morning of the sixth, you wake up and find yourself feeling incredibly chipper and rejuvenated, ready to take on the world and all things in it. Nothing can bring you down today and even those who are usually fussy or angry will find it hard to stay that way for long. Positivity is key here, and as you go about your day you'll find your thoughts are often drawn to capitalizing on positive qualities that you may not even know you have.

This doesn't always mean it's a good thing, however. Just because a trait is positive doesn't mean that it's only meant to do good. Being overzealous and foolhardy can cause a clash and several of you may find yourselves being too caught up in your own traits to notice they'll imbalance the people around you. A person who finds themselves in strong possession of being charming may wind up over-promising several things to several people in order to win favor. Someone who's suddenly lucky at love will have to fend off admirers that come from all sorts of directions. Goal-oriented minds will find that they're creating several to-do lists and pushing themselves too hard to finish all of the tasks at hand. Each trait manifests itself differently for each person, but it's the year you were born that seems to determine which set of traits are being amplified. It's a pattern that will take time to recognize, but talking to one another may help bring this comparison to light.

In addition to the consequences of your actions, the traits you exude will be capable of giving themselves a physical existence in the form of small, ordinary objects. Creation of these objects is for the most part involuntary and users will not always know how these will manifest. Do be careful, however. An overabundance of each trait may get you in trouble and the objects themselves will backfire in ways you may not expect. Those who are popular can wind up generating several friendship bracelets that physically bind them to too many people. Those whose sense of humor has been amplified could bring a laugh-track to life, a small object that cannot be paused and will chuckle at everything that's said no matter how serious it is. It's possible to resist giving in to these traits and avoid generating these objects, but the longer you resist the harder it will be to concentrate on anything else until the creation is expelled. You'll find your resolve weakening and compelled to give in as the days march on, but the longer you wait the more likely the objects will appear unstable. Perhaps it's best to continually create instead. You never know what you might get.

II.
When the night falls, things change and suddenly everything you may have understood about what's happening doesn't make much sense at all. As the sun sinks below the horizon and the two moons rise again, something in your personality shifts and all of your positive feelings fade away. These emotions are soon replaced by something darker and more negative, altering thoughts and ideas to the point that you may feel like you're a completely different person. Moodswings may run rampant, and insecurities will be heightened the longer the night draws on. Some of you may find greed threatening to overwhelm you, or impatience clouding your judgment and causing reckless decisions to be made. While these may not be traits you possess normally, it all comes back to when you were born and what traits the stars seem to have determined to be yours.

While you can still display independent thought and will when you possess your positive traits in the daylight, the amplification of your more negative qualities begin to overshadow all else. Giving in to your darker side is much easier than fighting it off and indulging in these traits never hurt anyone…except for perhaps yourself. While positive manifestation creates objects in abundance to the point of annoyance, negative manifestation seems to generate the metaphysical into a physical being that causes harm. The creation of elements bound to your negative side allows these objects to slowly drain away your energy, zapping the goodness out of you and leaving you as a pale, empty shell. This can be remedied by finding someone who's managed to hold onto some form of positivity, or even going to a place with plenty of lighting to drive back the shadows. Exposing yourself to either of these will help you recognize what traits have possessed you this time.

But what about your "normal" personality? Where has it gone? It's still there buried deep beneath the surface but it's much harder to reach when your less-than-stellar qualities are amped up to the point of consuming you. You may need to find people to remind you of who you once were and allow them to convince you to try and focus on your positive sides again. An imbalance is the likely outcome without someone to check on you. Being alone isn't really an option now, but can you convince others to stay? That's something only you can answer.

Additionally, you'll have to do something about the object you've brought forth in the dark hours. Leaving objects out in the open without binding them to some form of light will allow the creations to begin reaching out and draining anyone nearby. Of course, you can try to destroy these objects as well...but you may wish to remember that time is a factor here.
III.
There are two moments in each day in which your personalities will come into alignment and you'll have perfect clarity of the situation and who you are. During the hour of sunrise and the hour of sunset, an eclipse-like effect appears in the sky and allows users to grapple with both sets of traits. At the end of the day, you're still you, but these hours will give you the advantage to learn how to cope with veering too far in either direction and learn the sense of balance.

Working together, users will be able to generate items from both positive and negative traits during these hours. They must then learn how to fuse them together and create a balanced concept. Where there's light there must be darkness and while the answer may not be obvious at first, the overlayering of the sun and the moon(s) serves as a hint that perhaps the combination is the key you seek. Strangely, users are able to stare straight at this eclipse without worrying about damage to their eyes. Perhaps it's not as real as you think.

As objects come into being, willed into existence by embracing your positive and negative traits in performing some sort of action or skill encompassing the idea, they will begin to multiply and it will soon be up to users to find what items may match with someone else's items. An item created from love may go well with something created by indulgence. An item manifested from insecurity may react just as well with an item drawn from kindness. Should a user try to form an item created from two positive traits, it will explode into a shower of fireworks that rise up and spark above the city. For those who attempt to shove two negative traits together, a large smoke bomb will go off instead and the items will be destroyed, forcing users to start all over again.

Should users finally get it right and create an acceptable object, something unusual occurs. The object begins to glow and duplicates itself, hovering in front of both creators before they soon dissolve into black and white sparks that wash over you and add a thin, iridescent sheen to your skin. Your phone will beep loudly, announcing that a new feature has been unlocked on your Retrospec app and drawing your attention to a brand new map and a QR code to be scanned. The map will lead to a randomized location somewhere in the city of Recollé, and should a user choose to follow it they will come face to face with another silver door, QR scanner firmly affixed in the center.

Try all you'd like, citizens. These doors will not budge just yet, but the QR code will be accepted. A new message will appear once you've been scanned.

Make some preparations. The doors will open on the 17th and a group will be led down to undo what's been done. You in?

…time to make some decisions, it seems. What will your choose? At least there's a moment's reprieve to decide.
IV.
For the most part, this is actually fairly tame in comparison to usual Retrospec nonsense. It seems as though this storm can be weathered together and as users seek out one another it's easier to combat these effects with minimal damage. Create objects to manifest doors? That seems fairly simple and though the mysterious preparation message may leave some of you uneasy, it's the right direction to go.

Naturally, of course, there's someone who isn't too happy that light and darkness are becoming balanced and in sync.

On the morning of the fourteenth, positive traits are amplified as usual during the sunlight hours. It's a beautiful Valentine's Day in the city of Recollé. Sweet coffees are on special at both Expressive and A Good Bean. Romantic comedy marathons are queued to air all day long at Flix. Sweet Stems has a discount on flowers by the dozen, and oh look, there are black wispy hearts floating right past you through the air.

Wait, what?

Perhaps you're an overly curious type who will follow the hearts, or you may just be unfortunate enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. These hearts are slow to move, floating aimlessly until they spot a target upon which they zip forward straight into your own heart. A tattoo manifests somewhere on your person, heart-shaped and black, and you feel an icy chill run through your veins as all kindness, love, and "goodness" are washed away to be replaced by the traits you've combatted in the evenings. Overwhelmed by the effects of the heart, the power within you begins to churn and give life and form to your personal darkness. A musician will be able to play notes that come to life, stabbing their victims and putting them into a deep sleep. An actor will be able to give in to their overly dramatic side and create set pieces around them, manipulating people nearby into "performing" for them. A hair stylist will have the power to create scissors out of their hands and grow out their own hair to use as a lasso to trap those they wish to punish.

The darkness in your heart will generate something different for every single individual, and no "villain" will be alike. Chaos will run rampant during the light hours and those uninfected will have to find a way to reverse this curse. The infected will recognize this as a "kissing disease", and through trial and error the uninfected will have to seek out the new tattooed marks and kiss them away, freeing the characters from their binds and bringing light back to the surface.

Good luck getting to each mark though. It will take teamwork and some clever thinking to outsmart the infected and hold them down. With a little skill, you might just be able to create your own objects to pin down the problem and save the day.
BONUS.
Beginning on the fifth, a few things will happen. For one thing, anyone who visits the liaison's office any time after this point will find that the door is locked and the office is empty. That's probably nothing to worry about. However, messages will be sent to each user's phone over the course of the next few weeks with status updates.

Users will find themselves in possession of what looks like a digital map of Recollé with several black dots scattered around. As each user successfully fuses an object that manifests a door, a black dot turns white and flashes on the screen. Over time, all of these doors will begin to appear to show users locations that may grant them access to the next layer.

Users will also find themselves in possession of a short biography about themselves. Featuring information such as their height, weight, level of combat and other key notable traits (three best qualities and three worst qualities), these biographies also appear to have notes added about regains you've recovered or events that have happened in the city.

Too bad these biographies aren't just meant for you. The moment you read over them, the biography forwards itself to just about anyone on the Retrospec app and you'll receive someone else's biography to read over instead. Not long after, a video call will connect you to this new person and cannot be disconnected for a minimum of fifteen minutes.

This gives "getting to know each other" a whole new meaning, doesn't it? Maybe you'll learn something useful today.
NOTES.
Welcome to [community profile] recolle's February event part one!

You can claim three freebies on this log!
-Players may claim one freebie for manifesting an item and dealing with the consequences. This item may be a positive or negative trait, and this thread must be at least five comments from you.
-Players may claim one freebie by fusing one of their objects with someone else's and creating a door. This thread must be at least five comments from you.
-Players may claim one freebie by healing someone from the kissing disease. This thread must be at least five comments from you.

-Please keep in mind that the bonus is a bonus prompt! If you do not want your character's biography floating around for other users to see, you do not have to be affected by this prompt.

-While the Chinese zodiac traits are linked, these are merely suggestions that you can build off of. These traits will be what's most prevalent and attached to characters, but you're free to have others in a similar vein show up. Objects manifested from these ideas into real life may also vary and the above in the log are simply examples.

Finally, any questions you have regarding this event may be directed to the mod comment here. Be sure to review the mods' question thread on the plotting post for additional information as well!

i. roleplaying means to play a role

[ It is a vibrant paint job despite the brisk winter breeze brought on by the clouds scattered throughout the air today, the colors on the tabletop miniature lush and majestic beneath what rays of the afternoon sun do succeed in breaking through the condensated barrier. Even the (half) hash-shaped scar on the right cheek of the miniature is conspicuous for its size, hinting at an almost professional-grade quality of production; and yet, despite the sheer level of detail from the semi-accurate ancient Egyptian garb that adorns the miniature’s body to the wild, moon-white hair atop the miniature’s head, it is, in fact, the work of one of the Retrospec network’s own.

Unfortunately, regardless of to whom it belongs, whatever admiration anyone might have for the craftsmanship that had gone into the thing is probably going to be cut short when it starts climbing your pants leg to try to either pick at your back pocket for change, or to dive into your handbag in search of your wallet.
]

ii. bonus

- Bakhura Farouk (joined July 2017), age 18, born October 25th.
- white hair (originally dark brown), brown eyes, 5’9”, 115 lbs.
- lost his parents in an accidental apartment fire at the age of 5 and was refused by his extended family in Egypt; placed in the foster system
- because of his grief, developed an intense enthusiasm for the occult and started acting out around others even at the cost of being adopted or making friends
- copes with his loneliness through games, especially tabletop games and video games, and is an extremely sore loser
- was renowned as a delinquent at Recolle High School until his memories convinced him to reconsider his life choices; believes that his other selves had a just cause but went about pursuing it in the wrong way and is afraid of walking the same path
- now has a job at a local game store and is striving to be a better person than his “other” selves, though still somewhat rough around the edges
- has the Millennium Ring, a Duel Monsters deck, and clothes from his former life
- has a so-called “spirit monster” called Diabound and minor telekinetic abilities, but is otherwise less magically powerful than his other selves for the time being
- rolled to seduce the merman in August 2017 but did not offer himself as the bait
- failed a mission in Respatrum because of a particularly painful memory regain
- took down a handful of viruses with Albert Matthews
- tolerates people more than he did when he first joined the app but still reluctant to trust them overall because his childhood fear of abandonment now manifests as a fear of people forgetting about the app
- loyal and overprotective deep down
- practical, strong-willed, and extremely goal-oriented
- can be reckless and moody, but has been showing signs of improvement recently

[ Bakhura is sneering at the file in his hands, unaware that it's been sent off to some unknown party while he protests its contents: ]

Tch! What a load of shit. I do not have a fear of abandonment and I'm not overprotective. Who wrote this, anyway?

[ Wait, how long has this video call been on?

Shit.

[Oh, hey, this thing is really cool! And what amazing craftsmanship...

Rean's not too familiar with the world of tabletop gaming, but enough to know what he's looking at. And it does distract him, momentarily, enough to even get him to bend down and examine it a little closer when—

Why is it moving. WHY IS IT GOING FOR HIS WALLET. That's his emo wallet chain, little figure, you stop that!]

H-hey!

[Time to fight a miniature? This is his life now, apparently.]
hauhra: (and that's everything) (rifraff street rat i don't buy that)

[personal profile] hauhra 2019-02-18 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
[ Arching just above a pair of widened, brown eyes in shock are thin strokes of white paint, their color the sole reason they can be seen even with Rean's proximity to the miniature. How in the world could this young man have intercepted his raid like this, especially at that size when being stealthy should have been that much easier for the great King of Thieves? An invisible tongue brushes against the underside of equally invisible teeth, sucking them in annoyance while the miniature picks up the pace, climbing the length of the wallet chain even quicker than it was earlier -- though with its stature, going faster can only cover so much ground before it's easily snatched up by an ordinary-sized human being.

Yet, despite the odds, giving up has never been in its owner's nature -- and with its ties to its owner's soul, nor will giving up be in its own.

Come at him, bro.

[personal profile] motiv8 2019-02-18 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well, there aren't a lot of things that often go for Rean's pockets, for one thing. For another, it's not often that miniatures start moving, so yeah, Rean's going to be on high alert when it starts.]

Knock it off—!

[He cannot believe he is yelling at a miniature in the middle of the street? This is his life now, apparently.

So is trying to pluck the miniature off of his wallet chain. How much of a resistance can the little guy put up, anyway?]
hauhra: (and that's everything) (one trick ahead of disaster)

[personal profile] hauhra 2019-02-19 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
[ Lead is one of the more classic materials in miniature production, and for good reason: not only does it give miniatures a brilliant finish, it also lends them a level of durability that continues to surprise Bakhura despite the growing popularity of plastic amidst safety concerns. (Fortunately for Rean, this particular miniature doesn't have any weapons on its person that he should be worried about right now.)

In fact, that same durability is what allows the miniature to withstand the lower half of its body being tugged on while the other clings to the chain with all its might -- which, admittedly, isn't going to be much by comparison, and the very real possibility that the miniature that he had poured all of that effort into could end up in pieces is what ultimately brings its out-of-breath owner running to the scene.
]

Hey, seen any tabletop miniatures around here...?

[ It's a strange question, but one that he's desperate to answer at this point before the miniatures cause any more damage than they already have now that they were free from his control. ]
motiv8: (⚔️ 19)

[personal profile] motiv8 2019-02-19 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[Listen, Rean doesn't want to break this little guy into pieces. That would basically be murder, probably? And he is very much not about that life. So he's tugging at the lower half with one hand and trying to dislodge the minature's tiny hands with the other when he hears the question, popping his head up from his battle to look at Bakhura.]

Y-yeah, actually. I, um. Might currently be fighting with one. [And turning to hiss at the figure at his side for a second:] Come on, let go...!

[A strange question earns an equally strange answer.]

I take it he's yours?
hauhra: (now try your best to stay calm)

[personal profile] hauhra 2019-02-20 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and unfortunately, he's not the only one.

[ His thumb is digging under one of the miniature's fists, careful to avoid scooping any of the lead up with his actual nail. ]

However, he is the one that I'm the least worried about, since the worst he can do is pick people's pockets... it's the monster miniatures that I'll really need to find, especially the boss monster.

Of course, at these sizes, they're going to be limited in what kind of damage they can do, but they still managed to make enough of a nuisance of themselves back at the game shop even before they had escaped.

[ And he still needs to get back there to do some cleaning up before he's fired, but right now, he's more worried about the potential vandalism to be had here. ]
motiv8: (⚔️ 14)

[personal profile] motiv8 2019-02-20 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[Thank you for your assistance, man who makes terrifying thieving miniatures.]

Erk... yeah, I can definitely see that being a problem.

[Even at this scale, monsters are bad. Yup.]

Well... I'm already roped into this. If you want help hunting them down, I'd be happy to help.
hauhra: (and that's everything) (one jump ahead of the hit men)

[personal profile] hauhra 2019-02-21 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Good, because there's more thieves just like this one coming our way right now that you and I can practice on.

[ And surely enough, hurtling over the hill is a small army (more like a handful) of miniatures just like the one that Rean and Bakhura had plucked from Rean's bag.

Unfortunately, on realizing that Bakhura is there to apprehend them, the army disperses in various directions, with some of the miniatures diving into bushes and shops and the others charging on forward.
]

Tch! You bastards had better hope I don't regain control over you.

[ Of course, it's his fault that they went wild in the first place, but that's not something that Rean needs to know. ]
motiv8: (⚔️ 17)

[personal profile] motiv8 2019-02-21 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[What.]

Why do you even have so many of these? Are they supposed to be a common enemy, or— hey! Get back here!

[Unfortunately for some of the scattered minis, Rean's not afraid of no bush. He's gonna get to plucking them out of there, come snow or thorny branches.]
hauhra: (and that's everything) (they're just lousy with loyalty)

[personal profile] hauhra 2019-02-21 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Rest in pieces, Rean and Bakhura ]

No, I originally only had one because it's the character that I play as when I'm not the Game Master, but — hey, that's my hair, you little shit — fuck —

[ He snatches the miniatures that have leapt from nearby lightpoles onto his hair and shoves them into his backpack. ]

— but I got more this morning from this weird power that I can only was given to me by Retrospec somehow, though I don't remember the other me being able to bring miniatures to life quite like this

[ He plucks another miniature from Rean's shoulder. ]

Gotcha.
motiv8: (⚔️ 16)

[personal profile] motiv8 2019-02-22 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
[Rean only briefly glances toward his shoulder when Bakhura plucks off the miniature. He hadn't even really noticed it there...]

Thanks. Here, got a couple more for you.

[And he pulls a couple out of the bush, holding them out for Bakhura to take and shove in the backpack.]

Yeah, Retrospec seems like a pretty fair place to put blame— hey, [and plucking another miniature off of his wallet chain, stop that!] no, we've been over this! — but, woah. Being able to bring miniatures to life at all is a pretty cool power, if you ask me...
hauhra: (and that's everything) (he's become a one-man rise in crime)

[personal profile] hauhra 2019-02-22 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
At least until they stop listening to your orders and ransack the place you work at... fortunately for me, my boss left me in charge of the store for the day so that he could run some other few errands, but — whoa! [ There's one of the monsters. ]

— that still only gives me so much time until he comes back.

But I guess I shouldn't really be surprised that this power turned out this way, since this is what always seemed to happen in my memories, too.

[ Mostly because the other Bakura had animated the miniatures by transferring people's actual souls from their bodies, leaving him with little actual control over what they did unless he threatened them.

That small difference is enough to make Bakhura here suspect that it's not actually a normal regain, and gives him hope that he'll be able to clean up after this mishap more sufficiently, especially with how many of the miniatures he and Rean had gathered already.

In fact, at this point, they were only really missing the boss character, Zorc Necrophades.

...Well, yeah. Just about anything is way less impressive when that's what you're dealing with.

[Yikes, though. He's glad he's helping, he wouldn't want Retrospec nonsense to make someone lose their job.]

All right... how many more are we after, here? I'm not really sensing anything immediately—

[And before Rean can finish that thought, there's a yelp of surprise from somewhere nearby. Looks like Zorc might be causing some small amount of havoc.]

...Scratch that. I have a sneaking feeling that might be something we're interested in.

[also, at least they're not after dragon dong zorc.]

[ LAUGHS I'm honestly relieved that he's too game-breaking to introduce into Recolle in anyway... not that Monster World Zorc is much better by design but still!!

Surely enough, a small ball of fire is tearing out of one of the nearby shops. Being unable to travel great distances at that size, it luckily vaporizes on the sidewalk before it can burn anything — but another one like that that actually collides with something and Rean and Bakhura could have a much bigger problem on their hands.
]

If you're right, then you'll want to get something that it can be contained in. We're not going to be able to use the backpack for this one... not when it can be set on fire, too.

[ Despite the work he had put into them, the miniatures are much less of a concern than having to get rid of the bag afterward. Otherwise, Bakhura would have probably set it on fire himself, because he's out of ideas on what to do with the still-animate figurines bustling about in the bag.

(That heart on the palm of his left hand? He doesn't suspect a thing. In fact, he's been too busy chasing these things around to have even noticed that it's there.)

[Listen, everything is better than the dragon dong. Everything.

Rean looks at that fireball, eyes wide for a moment.]

That...

[Give him a minute, he was not ready for this. Once he's recovered, though:]

...Right. Let's see... non-flammable and can take heat...

[He drops down onto one knee, slipping his own backpack off his shoulder and going digging. After a moment, he produces a stainless steel thermos and offers it to Bakhura.]

...You think this'll hold 'im?

[RIP his thermos if it'll work, but it seems like a small price to pay to avoid another fire.]

[ tmw Shueisha literally had to pull Takahashi aside and be like "hey buddy about that final boss design" for the bunkoban re-release... ]

Yeah... unfortunately, we'll still need to catch him first, because he's not going to come to us... since he's a character that can be played only by the Game Master, he's too used to having the adventurers come to him for that.

[ He'll gently shove the thermos back into Rean's hands. ]

Keep it. It's my soul that he's connected to, and that means that I'm the one who needs to be the bait this time.

Be sure to stay close to me, though... you'll have to be fast.

[ And with that, he'll dart over to the shop the moment the fireballs stop coming. Before long, Zorc emerges from the minuscule puffs of smoke.

It will be a lot easier to catch him now that he's been flushed out of the shop, though the flames will still be something to watch out for.

[omg I didn't know about that... incredible.]

That... makes sense, but I still don't like the sound of it.

[Because obviously it's better if he's the one that gets hurt as opposed to the guy actually creating these things! Rean what even goes on inside your head.]

All right. I think I can manage the fast part, though. Let's do this!

[Rean's sticking close behind, just outside the shop. As soon as those smoke puffs clear and Zorc is visible, Rean's going to make an attempt to scoop him up into the thermos. He's moving as quickly as he can, but it's not like Zorc is exactly distracted, so this may or may not work out.]
