training sessions -
November
i. introductions
Just before six, Tatsuo opens the doors of the building. The layout is fairly straight forward. Mens' and womens' locker rooms to the left, office and storage room to the right, and the dojo itself straight ahead. A small hallway leads off to the right to some smaller practice rooms, but those won't be in use tonight. Once those that need to change into more comfortable clothes have had a chance to do so, and everyone is assembled in the dojo itself, Tatsuo steps to the front of the group.
"I'd like to thank everyone for coming tonight. As you might have heard, this is Weapons Practice. It was started last year by Dante, who is no longer on the app, because many of us either received weapons from Retrospec or have gotten memories of fighting or battles. As some of the newcomers have already learned, you might find yourself in a situation where you want those kind of skills."
"However, just because you've gotten a memory of fighting doesn't mean you are instantly a master. It takes some time for those skills to settle in, so to say. Weapons Practice can provide you the space needed to work on those skills and people to practice them with. This can also very well cause more memories to surface, so be prepared for that. Or maybe you haven't gotten a weapon or memory and just want to learn how to fight. We're here for that too."
"I will reiterate the rules at this time. There is to be no use of magic, with the exception of healing, should that be required. If you have enhanced physical abilities, please rein it in for those of us that do not. No live blades unless you have gotten clearance from me to do so. No firearms or other non-inert weapons, unless they can be used in a strictly inert form. If you have questions whether your weapon is allowed, please see me."
"You may not spar or even lift a weapon until after you sign the legal waiver. All spars must be supervised, so please grab me or someone who has identified themselves as a referee if you wish to spar. If you are here to go all out and run wild, leave. We are here to practice, not beat each other to a pulp. If anyone does get injured, stop the bout immediately and call for Elliot."
ii. pick your weapon and find a partner
There are a number of practice weapons available for people to use. Wooden swords of various lengths and styles. There are also some metal ones, ranging from fencing foils to short swords to katanas, all blunt and tipped for safety. Staves and other polearms (ie spears, glaives, naginata, halberd) lean against a stand. There's even some wooden axes and knives, along with wooden and metal sheilds. And for those with an interest in close-range non-bladed weapons, there are short staffs of varying lengths.
Don't see a weapon that intrests you? Just ask Tatsuo. Depending what your request is, he might be able to get you something by the following week.
Once you've selected your weapon, it's time to find a partner. There are a few old-timers who can help teach, but maybe you want to just jump right in? That's okay too. Or are you someone with a little experience under your belt and want to pass on a little knowledge? Weapons not really your thing? You can learn some hand-to-hand here as well. If you're wanting to test your skills with a little sparring, don't forget to grab a ref. And if you aren't sure where you want to start and just want to watch for a while, grab a chair. Just watch out for the occasional flying weapon.
iii. cool down and mingle
Right at 9 PM, Tatsuo lets out a loud wistle. With only one healer on deck, the weapons portion of the practices are only going to last for three hours. But people are free to stick around for an hour or two to get to know their fellow Weapons Practice attendees. Compare weapons or fighting memories. Or just compliment someone you saw having a good spar. Maybe someone was nice and brought cookies?

Re: iii
[Li-Na made plenty, so there's enough for everyone to have two if they so wish.]
Ah, thank you Yogi. You looked good yourself. How's your hand feel?
[b/c yeah, she saw that lol]
Re: iii
[ He looked down and rolled his wrist. ]
It'll be okay, probably just got hit wrong. I'll ice it later. I've definitely had way worse at gymnastics practice!
Re: iii
[Li-Na chuckles lightly]
This is true. I've lost count of how many bruises and pulled muscles I've gotten from dancing.
Re: iii
[ At the mention of dance, he pouted. ]
You know, I still haven't had the opportunity to come and see you dance. When are you going to invite me to one of your practices, or a showcase?
Re: iii
on the 7th at 7pm in the auditorium. We'll be putting up fliers on campus next week.
[and then she grins a little]
And my toddlers at Dancinerate are going to have a recital of their own next month too.
[b/c this convo is taking place before a ghost steals her class away from her :'D]
Re: iii
I most certainly will!
[ He says it like a threat, but he's also excited?? He melts at the mention of a kid's class though. ]
Aw, that's so cute! I didn't know you taught little kids.
Re: iii
[she clutches her hands to her heart]
Yogi, they're so adorable. I mean, okay, they can be a real handful sometimes, but they're so cute and so happy when they dance. I love it.
Re: iii
Oh did you start at Recolle U already? Gosh, time flies. But I'm so happy for you! If you need anything there, you let me know. I know all the best places to get coffee between classes.
[ He winked and then made an 'awww' sound at the mention of the children. ]
Oh they sound adorable!
Re: iii
Is there anywhere to get coffee other than the cafeteria and the Student Center? Usually I bring my own coffee, but sometimes I need more, and the lines there are always so long.
[poor, sleep deprived college students...]
Re: iii
[ He giggled. ]
Don't worry, I'll show you! They always have these little spots you can go that aren't as crowded and have great coffee, especially just outside campus if you don't mind skirting the edges.
Re: iii
Hmmmm are there any near the east side of campus? I don't want to have to go far from the performing arts building if it's cold outside. Recolle gets soooo much colder than Hong Kong.
[save this tropical girl from the cold]
Re: iii
Yup! My building isn't to far from that. I think they shoved all the art kids over into one corner.
[ He laughed, because it was sort of true? But it also meant that any of the artsier entrepreneurs wanted to set up there with coffee stalls because they knew how much that particular student group enjoyed said coffee. It was practically 50% of their blood. ]
What was it like in Hong Kong? I've only ever lived in the US, and if I did travel for competition it so restrictive I never got to explore anywhere.
Re: iii
Re: iii
Is that like the fancy area of Hong Kong?
[ He thinks he's seen pictures, but if you honestly asked him to pick it out of a line up, unless it was to obviously different, he would most likely have trouble. But then, he thought a lot of big cities were like that though. ]
Is it any easier getting around here? I usually either just bike to school or I catch a bus if it's a bad weather day.
