WHO: Matt Murdock and Others

WARNINGS: Discussion of domestic abuse in open trial prompt and one closed prompt
The Trial of Enji Todoroki [OPEN]
[ Enji Todoroki, a famous retired actor was arrested on charges of domestic abuse. The media went wild and court reporters fight for seats every day of the trial. Photographers and camera man sit out on the courthouse steps or in the hallways if possible in hopes of getting a shot of Mr. Todoroki and his lawyers. The internet is wild with arguments among fans, and as the trial proceeds and days pass it doesn't look like the chaos surrounding the case will cease. ]
A. [ The judge had declared a recess for lunch and after some extra effort and a roundabout route Matt had reached one of the nearby restaurants. He's sitting now alone now and eating in silence, his bag tucked into the small booth seat next to him. At one point he puts his fork down and takes his glasses off so he can run a hand over his face. There are bags under his eyes that one might notice if they get a glance before he puts the shades back on.
It would be easy for someone to slip into the booth across from him if they wanted to... ]
B. [ His closing argument had gone well, he had reminded the jury of the medical evidence and the testimony given by the defendant's son. The defense had offered counter points and again tried to paint their client as a good man one last time before the jury left to vote. With all the press surrounding this case the air feels thick and heavy in the courtroom when the foreman stands to announce the verdict. Everyone there might have been holding their breath.
Guilty. The room erupts in noise that drowns out the full list of charges as they're read and the judge has to bang the gavel. It barely takes a minute for the news to reach out of the courtroom.
Matt takes his time putting his papers away, knowing tv reporters might tackle him for a statement if he steps out immediately. People crowd around the doors and start filing out. Now is as good a time as any to approach ADA Murdock if you were seated in the courtroom. ]
Liar liar plants for hire! [OPEN, WILDCARD]
[ Matt had been able to hear the pulses of everyone around him for months now but in the past week or so he had started to take notice of the sudden change of pace that some people's hearts would take in the middle of what seemed like calm conversation. That was when he realized he was witnessing lies. Some big, some small, some white, some of terrible intent.
Of course now that he had noticed this lies began to stand out like a loud ringing every time that he heard one. ]
[ ooc: If you choose this prompt you can either set the scene involving a lie yourself or tag and request a prompt from me (please specify if your character or an NPC will be lying). ]

Hey, Kouhei. It's- It's about time we ran into each other. I'm surprised we didn't meet sooner. I believe that is my phone unless that other person dropped theirs...
[ If there's any doubt the text from Matt's niece is front and center on the screen with "Matt" at the top. "Thanks Uncle Matt. By the way is he your officially your boyfriend now?" ]
no subject
I could say the same. I'm getting into the habit of leaving campus more, so this is a nice surprise. And I think only your phone--
[But as he speaks, he glances down at the screen, and quickly looks back up upon realizing that the contents of the text are rather personal.]
S-Sorry, I didn't mean to eavesdrop. But your name is on the screen, so I'm pretty sure this phone is yours....
no subject
[ Matt raises a brow at Kouhei's stammered apology, then the screen reader recites the text over his earpiece with a curious click of a button and it's immediately apparent. ]
Oh. Mary's text.
[ His words get caught in his throat for a second as his face colors slightly. He clears his throat. ]
Uh. Sorry. I hope seeing that didn't make you uncomfortable.
no subject
No, that's my line. I'm not uncomfortable at all, but I'm sorry for accidentally reading that.
[Kouhei hopes that he sounds secure, given that he didn't stammer this time (and isn't uncomfortable, as he'd said), but his slight embarrassment over his own blunder is obvious in his tone.]
Um.... Congratulations, if it's in order. [Ugh, he shouldn't have said that.]
no subject
Um. That's kind of you to say. Actually- Well, it's a long story. I'm not...
[ Why are words so hard? He's suddenly hyper aware of all the people around them. The conversations at other tables. The tap of someone typing on their laptop. The employee coughing in the break room. His heart starts racing. Calm down, calm down. ]
I haven't told many people that I'm... So if you could keep it quiet, please.
no subject
I'm sorry, I really shouldn't have assumed, um--!
[There's a bit of a frenetic tone to his voice, as he quickly realizes, and he has to take an awkward moment of silence to gather his thoughts.
Which is when Matt speaks again and Kouhei's thoughts spiral once more. Ah.... How relatable. The last thing he wants Matt to think is that he was judging him. How did his words come across? What about his tone? What can he say?! He likely just embarrassed an acquaintance (a friend?), made him say something he likely wouldn't tell a soul. So dipping into his rare impulsive nature, Kouhei can't stop the words from spilling out--]
M-Me.... Me too. I, I understand-- I understand really well! [Feeling colour rush to his face, he speaks a little more quietly than before, though he was relatively quiet to begin with.] So.... I won't tell a soul. You have my word.
[A secret for a secret.... or something to that effect.]
no subject
And whatever this young man wants too.
[ Let him do you a favor Kouhei, he feels bad for putting you in an awkward position to begin with. ]
no subject
Until Matt offers to pay for him, and he waves his hands a little.]
Wait, you don't have to! I.... [Well, he probably shouldn't be causing trouble for the cashier, either way, and barely bows his head out of habit.]
Um, if you're sure, then a small iced coffee is fine.
no subject
Sorry our conversation got so... Awkward just now. I've been trying to decide how to explain things to my niece and forgot to close the texting app. That was on me.
no subject
No, don't worry. I'm sure you didn't plan on dropping your phone, after all.
[And that wasn't his fault either.]
I should be the one apologizing for putting you in a weird position.
no subject
[ He says this and still smiles but he seems a little stiff. ]
I'm lucky for that matter. There are others I know who might not have been accepting or might have had good intentions but failed to be discreet. You're one of just a few people who know. I've tried to stick to dating women since I'm attracted to them as well. I didn't expect to come this close to... making an exception.
no subject
...You shouldn't have to make an exception, if you like someone. I'm probably not the best person to say this, since I've always been afraid of people finding out about me, but... If he's someone you care about, isn't that what's the most important?
I completely missed this I'm so sorry! ;A;
No, you're right. This kind of connection to someone else is worth more than I can put into words.
And I think you're one of the more fitting people to say it, actually. A couple of the friends I have who have been most encouraging also happen to be straight. Not that I don't appreciate their support but... Well, one of them is aware that support is the best he can offer, but the other is less sensitive.
Don't worry at all!
[Honestly, having never really acted on his own feelings toward anyone, he isn't sure if that's really the case or not. But thankfully, Matt seems grateful for this newfound connection between them, and Kouhei can't keep from smiling just a bit. Not that Matt can see it, but.... He can't help himself.]
Thanks. I guess this is a happy accident, then. ....I mean, it sounds like you've never really gotten to talk about this kind of thing before. I don't want to pry or anything.... Nothing like that. But if you ever need someone to talk to, I'm happy to listen. Since I've been there too.
no subject
[ To be fair those who figured it out were looking for it, but Matt wasn't told that detail. For all he knows it's written in neon lights above his head whenever he's in the same room as the object of his affection. ]
It's difficult not to worry. I'd like to be able to control who does or doesn't know but that's become harder. I've spoken with him about this thing between us and he suggested that we date without telling everyone. I don't understand how that would be fair to him though, I really think he deserves someone who doesn't feel like they have to hide.
no subject
[It's a naive way of looking at it, he knows. Kouhei's largely the same, and would much rather be able to keep his feelings locked down than have them show on his face. But when it's someone else, someone unable to hold their warm feelings back, it's far more charming.]
I don't know everything about your situation, but if it's okay to give my opinion.... Since he likes you enough to suggest something like that, he'd probably be happier being with you and waiting for you to become more comfortable with opening up. Um.... Not that I know him or can say for sure, but. That's what it sounds like to me.
no subject
He makes me very happy. I guess after all the laughing and smiling someone nearby would have naturally wondered what was going on. You have a fair point, I hadn't considered that maybe being together and waiting to open up might make us both happier than being just friends and waiting.
[ Now that he says it aloud it's suddenly clear which path makes more logical sense if the goal is to be happy. Matt sighs and shakes his head at himself. ]
I've been caught up in my concerns about who knows what, who's open-minded, who's insensitive. I don't think I can say I've been thinking clearly about my options up to now. When you put it that way it's silly to say no.
