It was five minutes until the end of their shifts at the lab, and Derek and Tatsuo were tidying up their respective areas. Tatsuo had plans to head to the gun range and, as he finished organizing the files he still needed to work on the next day, he considered inviting Derek along. It'd been a while since they went to the range together.

After locking the files in his desk, Tatsuo logs off his workstation and reaches for his jacket. As he does so, his phone vibrates on his desk, at the exact same time Derek's vibrates over on his desk. Tatsuo glances over at Derek's phone, then picks his own up, wondering who was texting them both. Could be any number of people. Matt, Foggy, Jirou, maybe Togusa... okay maybe the list isn't that long.

However, the person who sent him the text was not on that list.

Man you guys are kind of nosy, aren't you? No idea what you're digging for, but I admire your work ethic. How would you like to take on a small project for us? You can even stay in the city for this one.

Tatsuo lets out a small, surprised, "huh," then holds up his phone as he turns to face Derek.

"Did you get the same text I just got?"

[Tatsuo looks at the next ring and frowns]

"Expansion. The full purpose of the project begins to expand in this layer and allows for an overlay."

Expansion? Does that mean the new regions, like Bosuma and Pesgare? Or do you think it means something else?

[Derek shakes his head.]

I don't think so. I think this fifth ring hasn't happened yet and...

[Derek points to the rest of the ring that are labeled in a different language.]

I think there is a lot more to come.

Hooray.

[Tatsuo's lack of enthusiasm is palatable.]

Right. So now we need a section for information on... I guess the Retrospec process itself? Those notes from yesterday about souls and shit. That would also go there.

[Tatsuo goes back to hunting down all the newspaper articles BECAUSE THERE ARE A TON OF THEM... until he runs across something else new.]

Maps! Maps of the subway! This would have been useful back in January.

Bloody hell yeah that would have been useful.

[Derek opens another box and and pulls out some really old papers.]

What's... bloody hell, look.

[Derek clears off a section of boxes to get a semi level surface. He then places a thick stack of papers on it.]

These are maps of the city. Look at the dates. The 50's, 60's... this one is 1918! It shows some of the original farming land.

What about the other regions? Pesgare and Magatus and the rest? Does any of them show those places?

[because some of those places seem like they've been there a while]

[Derek flips through the maps and shakes his head.]

Doesn't look like. There here is the map showing when the Observatory got built. Why are all these maps down here? I feel like this place is some place where Retrospec wants to keep things hidden. Like is there anything weird about those subway tunnel maps? Any secret tunnel passages?

If they wanted to keep it hidden, then why did Zee let us in here? Maybe half the reason they haven't been able to tell us any of this stuff is because it's been lost in this mess.

[let's be real, you could lose pretty much anything in this room without even trying]

Now that you mention it... there's tunnels on this map that weren't there the previous times I went down. Like... here... and here. I should have passed those tunnels. But they definitely weren't there.

Weren't there or perhaps blocked off and filled in?

[Derek looks back at some of the maps and sighs.]

I wonder if these maps will be of any use to us in the future... I'm going to try taking pictures of them. then we can organize all these maps on a shelf: subway and city, done chronologically.

[Derek takes out his camera and starts taking pictures of each map, trying to get as much detail as possible.]

Not there. But they could have been filled in and covered up too.

[while Derek took the photos, Tatsuo went back to the never ending newspaper clipping hunt]

How many of these damn things did they cut out? Must have been every single paper printed that day...

[Derek lets out a snort as he is taking pictures.]

I wonder if they were actually able to get every single paper. I bet there is some really old lady in the city who has a copy somewhere stuck in her attic.

Yeah, used as wrapping for her old vase collection.

[He sorts the various clippings into separate boxes, then labels them.]

Right. That's that part done.

[Derek starts carefully folding up the many maps and putting them in order of what the map contained and then by the year.]

Great. Do you want to organize the stuff on the family tree stuff on those two families?

Yeah, we can put all that over... here.

[Tatsuo clears a shelf and labels it 'Founders & Families' before moving the information that they've found on the four Founders over to that section.]

What's left?

Well...

[Derek looks at the rest of the room... filled with more un-opened boxes.]

There's all that. We're going to be here all night I feel...

[Tatsuo stares at the room for a moment...]

Maybe one of us should go get some coffee...

[Derek instantly sets down the box he was holding.]

I can do it. You like your coffee with soy milk and two sugars right? Pretty sure I know how you like your coffee after working with you for three years.

[Before Tatsuo really has as chance to answer, Derek is out of the room and on his way to the nearby coffee shop that probably next to the library for obligatory reasons. Like, how can you not have a coffee shop next to a library?]

Yeah, soy...

[andddddd Derek is gone

Tatsuo holds up both middle fingers toward the exit]

I meant me, not you!

[grumbling to himself he goes back to organizing]

[Fifteen minutes later Derek is back with the coffee and a small bag.]

Here, I brought the coffee and...

[Derek holds out the small bag with a flourish.]

I bought you a blue berry muffin. The brownie is mine.

[Tatsuo narrows his eyes at Derek, but takes the bag and pulls out his blueberry muffin]

I forgive you. This time.

[Derek smiles at Tatuo's reaction.]

That's the spirit!

[He then takes his own coffee and baked good to another part of the room.]

OK, I'm going to find out what's over here, and we can just move things around by type of... what ever is in the boxes and then we can do from there.

[Three cups of coffee and a variety of baked goods later, Tatsuo shoves the last box into place. His jacket is draped over a filing cabinet and his shirt sleeves are rolled up to his elbows. He's dusty and sweaty and starting to feel a bit wired from the caffeine, but everything was finally done.]

Please tell me that was the last one.

[Derek, is likewise in a similar state as Tatsuo. The sleeves of his shirt are rolled up and his tie around his neck is hanging loosely around his neck. His hair has broken loose from the gel and there is sweat running down his neck.]

I think so. Fuck Retrospec. They need more employees. Do we text Zee back and tell him we're done?

Wouldn't hurt.

[Tatsuo takes out his phone and snaps a picture of the now organized storage room.]

All done. Anything else?

[and he sends picture and text to Zee]

[Well that's rather helpful. There's a pause before there's a text reply.]

That's a lot of help, thanks guys. Take a copy of the newspaper, the diagram and the map. I'm hoping you'll know what to do with them beyond that. I'm boosting some things otherwise and also mailing you your reward.
