[It's a beautiful, sunny Sunday afternoon at the park. Birds are singing, the sky is blue, kids are goofing off at the playground... all's right with the world! Ami's waiting near the dog walk, sitting in the grass; she's trying to mess with her phone, but shading her eyes from the sun while also wearing sunglasses.

Mami is grazing nearby, but raises her head to look when Naoto and Kanji approach, with a little snuffling noise that draws Ami's attention.]

Oh, hey, Naoto! [She grins and waves, then beckons to her lusus, who notably does not have a leash.] Mami, c'mere!

[It's kind of odd, having friends who are actually aliens who were raised by weird hybrid creatures.

But when it comes down to it, it's really not any more odd than much of what they've encountered here, and alien or not, Ami's perfectly pleasant to be around. So why worry about it?

She sees her friend on the ground, and lifts a hand in greeting.] Hello, Ami, I hope I didn't keep you-- [Kanji, who is on a leash, immediately takes the opportunity to yank forward, practically pulling Naoto flat onto her face; she stays upright, but it is clear that the large shepherd is the one in charge for now.

Kanji pulls her to about twenty or so feet in front of Ami and Mami, and... stops. Which is odd. He's usually the leaping type.

And while he's not acting aggressive or fearful, his gaze is on the strange creature in front of them. It's very clear that he has no idea how to react to this animal he's never seen before... while Naoto catches her breath.] Kanji! You can't pull me like that!

[Friday started like any good Friday should: with midnight shitposting. See, Ami had woken up from a dream absolutely convinced that she and James had to go to the mall and find the Easter bunny's eggs before the fetal chocobos inside suffocated. Naturally, she'd texted him immediately to impress upon him the urgency of this mission, in a hilarious exchange during which he was probably a lot more awake than she was.

Urgent or not, it would have been silly to go right then, of course, since the mall was closed. But they made plans anyway. He'd come over to her house before lunch, and from there they'd hit the mall and save the birds, which might or might not actually exist. (It was a weird dream, okay.)

Naturally, when Ami woke up for real, she remembered none of this conversation. So instead she spent the morning hours editing and uploading her green face tutorial, and basically not suspecting a thing. WHOOPS...]

[ Alright, he's running a few minutes late, but he thinks he's making pretty good time, considering how long the bus ride is here from Fort McCoy. So it's actually more nearing lunchtime by the time he actually gets to her front door and rings the bell.

And then he waits for her to come downstairs so they can embark on their mall teen adventure. ]

[It's Ami's mother who answers the door first. Mrs. Aihara may not have met James until now, but she's definitely heard of him, for better or worse. After some quick pleasantries, she calls up the stairs- "Ami! James is here!"

It comes as a surprise to Ami. For real? Surely he'd have told her if he was coming all the way from on base! But if it's a surprise, it's a pleasant one. She comes running down the stairs, and there he is, as promised.]

Hey! What are you doing here?

What do you mean, what am I doing here? What happened to that all-important mission to save the chocolate egg chocobos? You were the one who set it up!

[ Obviously that was some kind of a joke or a prank, but hey. James is game. Although now with Ami's cluelessness he's starting to get a little confused. ]
