[CLOSED] Discovering the Past
WHO: Derek Matthews and Tatsuo Kihara
WHERE: Recolle Police Department Police Records and Evidence Room
WHEN: March 21 after work
WHAT: Derek finds and reads his the file on his parents car accident.
WARNINGS: Talk of death and possible gore

So it's been 21 years since the car accident that killed Derek's birth parents and it's been three years since Derek has joined the CSI team at Recolle Crime Labs. Maybe it's because he finally feels he ready or perhaps with all the shit Retrospec giving him he finally wants to take charge of SOMETHING in his life that he is finally going to look for the specific record. But whatever the reason, Derek is going to need help because he can't look through all the boxes alone.
It is almost five o'clock and Derek goes over to Tatsuo's desks and sits on the edge.
"Hey Tatsuo, would you be willing to hang around for a bit and help me find the file on my birth parents car accident? The records and evidence room is a mess and I need some help."

"Your parents, huh? Yeah, I'm free tonight. I was just going to go to Deadeye after work, but this is more important."
no subject
Thank mate, I appreciate it. Meet you down there in a bit.
[Derek hops off Tatsuo's desk and goes to finish up the last bit of his work before heading down to the records and evidence room.]
no subject
Tatsuo puts the report away and finishes locking up his desk. Taking out his phone, he sets an alarm for a couple hours. He's seen the records room. The thought of digging through that room looking for one particular file is more than a bit daunting. It's going to take several hours at the very least and Tatsuo has no intention of skipping dinner. So a well timed suggestion of pizza might be helpful. After clocking out he goes to meet up with Derek.
"So. Where do you want to start?" he asks as he surveys the mess of filing cabinets and shelves.
no subject
Well, I suppose we look for either the car accident section or the unsolved cases section and then look through the year 1996 and see if we find anything. You want to see if you can find the files on car accidents?
[Derek starts walking through one of the narrow isle looking for the unsolved cases.]
no subject
[Tatsuo makes his way through the shelves and file cabinets, trying to make sense of whatever eccentric organization is going on in this room.]
no subject
[Derek looks up and down the shelf until he finds the unsolved cases. He pulls down a box , which results in a bunch of dust flying everywhere.]
Bloody hell don't people dust in here?
[Derek coughs a few times before wiping the side of the box to see the date. When he reads the date he sighs.]
2000. Where is 1996?
[Derek shoves the box back into the shelf and continues to look.]
no subject
[It takes Tatsuo a good twenty minutes of looking to just find the files on vehicular manslaughter.]
2010, too recent. 2005, still too recent. 1999, getting warmer...
no subject
How can anyone find anything if it's such a mess down here?
[Derek continues to look through the boxes until he finally finds a box in the back labled "Unsolved Cases 1996"]
FINALLY!
[Derek pulls the box forward so he can lift it off the shelf. The box has a think layer of dust stuck to the top of the lid, which explodes in Derek's face. Which of course, causes Derek to cough up a storm.]
Bloody hell!
[Derek turns his head away from the dust cloud, which in his attempt to rid his lungs of the unwanted dust, the box begins to fall off the shelf. Derek unaware of what was about to happen, is surprised by a sudden force on his chest and the wind almost being knocked out of him. He tries to catch himself on the self behind him, but he then has a flashback of the scene in the library from The Mummy and instead to try and step off this step stool he was standing on and catch the box.
This results in him stumbling off the step stool, ramming his back into the shelf behind him, and the box of files landing on it's side, the top falling off and some of the files spilling out.]
NOOOOOO!
[Whether the lament was directed towards the pain in various parts of his body or the fact that he just spilled part of the box of files on the ground will have to be something Tatsuo inquires about. Derek is already on his hands and knees surveying the the mess he created.]
no subject
[Tatsuo had just found the section for 1996 and caught a glimpse of a familiar name... when he hears the ruckus Derek makes]
You alright?
[He winds his way back through the shelves until he finds the younger man trying to collect the scattered papers]
I don't think they heard you all the way upstairs. You want to yell a little louder this time?
[shaking his head, Tatsuo bends down to help]
no subject
[Derek is shoving papers into the correct files as quickly as he can. He looks up at Tatsuo.]
And funny. This wouldn't have happened if someone had dusted in here. I mean look at this.
[Derek runs a finger across the fallen lid of the box and his finger pad is coated in a thick coat of dust.]
This is a health hazard. The city should be ashamed.
no subject
You're just embarrassed you managed to fall off ladder that short.
[Tatsuo hands Derek the papers he's gathered up]
no subject
That is what you get for your cheek.
[Derek then takes the files from Tatsuo and puts them back in the appropriate place in the box.]
Thank goodness only a few fell out or this would have been a nightmare. On the bright side, this is the box I need... I hope I need anyway.
[Derek crosses his legs and proceeds to flips the the files to find the one his has been wanting to read for years.]
no subject
Do you need me to look through any of it with you?
no subject
Go, go back over to looking through the car accidents. The file might even be over there anyway.
[Derek continues to look through the files.]
no subject
Sure. I'd just found '96 anyway.
[Tatsuo goes back over to the car accident reports As he looks back through them, he stops at the file labeled with his mother's name. 'Kasumi Kihara.' Slowly, he pulls out the file and sets it aside. Then he looks at the next few files. If Derek's parents are in here, they'll be pretty close to the report on his mother's death.]
no subject
[Car accident. Two dead, male and female. Four year old boy survived. Found it!]
T-Tatsuo! I think I found it!
[Derek quickly stands up and start making his way over to Tatsuo.]
no subject
[Tatsuo pushes the box he's been looking through back in place. No sign of Derek's parents in there. He's about to look through his mother's file when Derek calls out again.]
You did? Good, 'cause I came up empty over here.
[aside from the file he pulled out earlier]
no subject
It looks like it's all in here. Police report, csi report... is that a entry about an evidence box? But I thought everything was destroyed...
no subject
[Tatsuo tucks the file under his arm and goes to read over Derek's shoulder]
Apparently not everything. After all a CSI report means there was evidence, and they'd have wanted to keep that.
no subject
A watch, what they think is wedding bands... various different coins from different countries? Coins from the UK, German, France, Canada, and the US. I wonder why that is... really long vacation you think? Though why you would want to vacation in Canada in November is beyond me.
no subject
Maybe they enjoyed skiing? Or maybe you had a coin collection as a child and insisted on bringing it everywhere?
[That is an odd assortment of coins to be present.]
I'm amazed the coins survived at all.
no subject
[Derek pulls out en envelopes from behind some of the papers.]
What are these?
[Derek bends open the metal prongs, opens the envelop, and slides out the contents. Pictures of the bodies.]
Nope, not ready for that.
[Derek instantly shoves the photos back in sets the envelope aside. Looking back at the files he starts reading the report.]
Looks like it saying that the bodies were suspected to be a male and female body, bot in their early thirties. The female body has evidence of having given birth and suspected of being the mother of the surviving child. That must mean me I guess. Deaths were concluded to be a combination of smoke inhalation and being burned.
[Not feeling like reading much more of that section for a bit, Derek turns to page and finds the CSI report on the car.]
"The back rear window was smashed outward, indicating where the child had flown through the window. There was no booster seat for the child, thus allowing the child to more freely fly from the car." So, that'show it happened...
no subject
[or they could google it]
Hold on, you were ejected from the car? You barely had any injuries if I'm remembering correctly.
no subject
I guess. It's not like I remember any of this. Though really, the more I read this report, the more I am shocked that I even survived.
[Derek continues to read the file.]
Apparently they think the car rolled multiple times before it crashed into a tree.
no subject
[Tatsuo shakes his head]
Damn. I've heard of people surviving being ejected from vehicles, but it is pretty damn rare. Usually the opposite is more likely.
no subject
Really mate? This isn't just some case. This is my life we're talking about here.
[Derek turns back to the file.]
Looks like the car was registered to a rental company in Ontario, Canada. Well, that would explain the Canadian coins they found.
[Derek continues to read.]
I wonder how long it took for the police to even find out this happened...
[Derek turns back to the autopsy reports to see if the coroner had determined a time of death.]
no subject
[Tatsuo gives Derek an apologetic look]
Sorry. I just... it's just... a lot to take in.
[and if it's a lot to take in for him, doubly more so for Derek]
They drove down from Canada? In November?
[W H Y W O U L D Y O U D O T H A T ?]
What about what caused the wreck?
no subject
[Then something in the file catches Derek's eye.]
What's this... it's a witness statement. Apparently there was another car involved. But it only ran into a snow drift. It seems my parents car was driving on the wrong side of the road and to avoid a head on collision both cars swerved out of the way. Swerving on black ice cause my parents car to flip and roll.
[By the end of explaining it to Tatsuo, Derek's voice is starting to crack.]
It was around 10:30pm at night... but police didn't arrive for another two hours since the other driver passed out for a while...
no subject
[The more Derek reads, the more Tatsuo's own throat clenches. He reaches out and gives Derek's shoulder a squeeze.]
Oh man... Derek, I'm sorry. That's awful.
no subject
Do you think you can find this box for me? I-I want to see what's inside.
no subject
Yeah. I'll go dig it up.
[He sets the file he's been holding down on top of a filing cabinet, then goes in search of where the cold case physical evidence is stored. After a good five minutes of looking at shelf numbers, he turns a corner and suddenly the room opens up even larger.]
Yep. It's probably back here.
[He turns back in the direction he left Derek and calls out to his friend.]
Uh, there's a bigger storage area back here. I'm going to check it out.
no subject
[Derek just sits and waits, flipping through the file.]
no subject
But he finally gets the box down and carries it over to Derek.]
Here it is.
no subject
[Derek takes the box from Tatsuo and opens it. There isn't much inside. he pulls out a plastic evidence bag that has the coins in it.]
Well, here's the coins.
[Reaching in again he pulls out a bag with a simple wedding band.]
This must be my dad's ring. Simple, but nice.
[He sets it aside and reaches in and pulls out a more intricate diamond ring.]
Woah! This is nice...
[Derek holds the evidence bag closer to his face to get a better look.]
There is something inscribed on it... but it's not english. Do you have any idea?
[Derek hands the bag over to Tatsuo who will see Mon cœur est a vous inscribed in the inside of the band.]
no subject
... and pulls out his phone.]
Google translate says it means 'my heart is yours.'
no subject
[Derek looks at the rings again.]
But perhaps my parents were those kind of people...[a beat.]... D-do you think if I asked the department I could keep these. I mean, technically they would end up belonging to me right?
no subject
[Derek 'the Sap' Matthews]
It wouldn't hurt to ask. You are the next of kin.
no subject
I think I will.
[Derek then puts the rings back into the box and closes it. Nothing else really interested him in there. He then lets out a sigh.]
Thanks for being here and helping me with this. I don't think I could have managed alone.]
no subject
[Tatsuo claps a hand on Derek's shoulder]
You'd do the same for me if I needed help with something like this. I hope all this leads you to the answers you're looking for.
no subject
no subject
[frankly, Tatsuo has no idea]
Any why are you only telling me this now?
no subject
About finding the key in my bear? Well I found it in December and that was a pretty busy time of the year, so it slipped my mind and that's also when... I got dumped. January was a mess as you should be able to remember. And in February I was on a month long camping trip for Retrospec fighting crazy shit. Life has been getting in the way as you can see.
no subject
[Well. Okay. Those are all pretty valid excuses.]
So it's a safety deposit key? Any idea what bank it comes from?
[though, if the bank isn't anywhere in Recolle, they won't be able to access it]
no subject
I haven't really had time to check to be honest. But like... how many banks in Recolle have safety deposit boxes? Quite a few I imagine.
no subject
If you send me a picture of the key, we can at least start narrowing down which ones use the same blank.
