If you know Li-Na through school or work or the dance studio or the February mission or even just chatting on the app... you'd have gotten a bubbly text from Li-Na, inviting you to celebrate her birthday with her. The location? A private room at a karaoke bar. Anyone who shows up and tries to back out is quickly pulled along for the ride.
[though the room is a liiiittle bigger than this one]
The room is rather low key, though a button on a certain remote will lower a small disco ball from the ceiling if so desired. It can comfortably fit about 20 people. The karaoke equipment is at the front of the room next to the door and the rest of the room is taken up by a table and seating.
But singing isn't the only thing going on here. The karaoke club also has an extensive menu and a phone in the room that allows you to place your orders without leaving your playlist. Milkshakes, ice cream sundaes, bubble tea, crepes, sushi, curry rice, omurice, pizza, wings, all manner of Japanese and American finger food. You can even get salad if you want, but why would you? It's not maybe the best food ever, but you won't leave with an empty stomach. Unfortunately, since a number of Li-Na friends are under 21, no booze.
Don't like something on the playlist? Feel free to hook up your phone to the system and play one of your own songs. The point is to sing, eat, wish Li-Na a happy 18th birthday, and maybe make some new friends. Oh, and yes, there will be cake.
A possibly leading into C?? for karaoke shenanigans...
Thanks for inviting me.
[ With that, he hands her a large gift bag that's stuffed with sparkly tissue paper. Inside, there's a dance bag with her name stitched onto the other side. Alongside the bag is a matching water bottle. ]
Happy birthday, Li-Na. I selected these with certainty that they will be useful to you.
[ And also because they are cute... ]
yes, yes, goooood
You came! I am so glad!
[Don't even try to avoid her hug. Once she's done hugging him, she checks out the gift bag.]
Ahhhh these will be so useful! My last bag was getting a little worn. Thank you, Leon.
[she motions for people to scoot over so there's room for Leon]
I hope you know I expect you to sing something.

But he manages to cool down hearing that this will come in handy. Though he might be confident, he still wanted to be certain that she would like it. It's weird. He hasn't known Li-Na all that long, but he's compelled to make her happy. ]
You're welcome, Li-Na. I'm glad I gave it to you at the perfect time.
[ He's really happy. In fact he's smiling.... until she brings up singing and now he's red again. ]
W-Well naturally! It is a karaoke party and I do have a good singing voice. [ Except he's so gosh darn embarrassed to sing in front of everyone ahhhh ] I take it you'll be singing as well?
no subject
Good. I cannot wait to hear it.
[Li-Na might have a slightly mischievous look on her face...]
After all, I would not ask everyone to come to karaoke if I did want want to sing.
no subject
[ Though he says that, he's actually getting rather nervous by the mischevious expression that Li-Na has on her face. If looks could kill... ]
I look forward listening to you sing. Maybe we can perform a duet together before the night is over?
no subject
[It's a good thing Li-Na likes Leon, or the somewhat egotistical things he tends to say would rub her the wrong way. Sure, he might think well of himself, but she also knows he's a bit of a hopeless dork. It's cute.]
Oh, I like that idea. There are a lot of good duet songs in the catalog.
[And most of those duets are love songs. L O L.]
no subject
Plus it helps he likes Li-Na and he's willing to be nicer to her than most people. ]
That's good to know. With our prowess combined, we'll be sure to wow everyone with our singing combination.
[ HAHAHA RIP LI-NA AND LEON... ]
Would you like to grab a bite to eat first before we sing? Since it's your special day, I'm willing to go by the birthday girl's orders.
no subject
Mmmmm, something to eat would be good. I have not eaten since lunch today.
no subject
Let's grab a bite to eat, then. We can't have you singing on an empty stomach.
[ Plus he's hungry and this also gives him a game plan on how to go about singing without embarrassing himself.
He quickly grabs a seat and skims through the menu. ]
You picked a good place, the food sounds really delicious.
[ It also doesn't help he's eager to try all sorts of Japanese foods. ]
no subject
I was really happy to find it. Most of the other karaoke places are bars and more American. This one feels more like the ones I went to back home with my friends.
[Li-Na scans the menu with Leon, then taps one picture in particular.]
Ah! They have okonomiyaki! I had that once in Hong Kong. It is delicious.
no subject
I'm impressed that they have it, along with a variety of Japanese foods. [ He looks amazed by all of the choices and he almost doesn't know what to pick. ] I had it once when my family visited Japan.
[ Hmm. What is he craving for? Everything looks really good... ] I think I'll order curry rice. Japanese style curry has to be my favorite curry recipe.
no subject
I would love to visit Japan. One of my seniors joined the Tokyo Ballet.
[and that is how Li-Na views the world, either places she could go to see certain ballet companies or certain dancers... or companies her friends have joined]
Hmmmm, but what about curry fish balls?
[though, Leon isn't wrong, Japanese curry is delicious]
I think I will have the okonomiyaki and some dumplings.
no subject
[ He could see it. Li-Na performing so majestically that she'll be able to dance all over the world.
At her question, he hesitates. Though he still thinks that Japanese curry is the best... curry fish balls are amazing too. ]
Well, I can't deny those are good too... H-However! There is something special about Japanese curry.
[ There are too many good foods out there. ]
Good choice, I can go ahead and place our orders. [ He picks up the nearby phone and starts dialing. ] I'm just going to get water but did you want boba tea or anything like that?
no subject
Dancing in Japan would be wonderful. Though, I kind of hope to join a company in the United States or Europe.
[Li-Na gives the drinks list a quick glance]
Oooo, yes, they have a matcha milk tea with boba. That sounds amazing.
no subject
[ At that, he finishes the order. The mention of matcha milk boba tea does sound really good. Once he's done, he hangs up the phone. ]
They said our meal will be here in about twenty minutes. I might order that once we are done singing. It's been a while since I've had boba tea.
no subject
[She will see how far she can get on her own first. Though if his family can introduce her to the director of the London Royal Ballet... she wouldn't exactly say 'no']
Twenty minutes? That is enough time for more than one song.
[DRAGS THAT SONG LISTING OVER]
What shall we sing?
no subject
[ DON'T MIND HIM, he's just going to swallow hard because singing??? That's something he's not used to at all and he's really embarrassed singing in front of people for the first time in who knows how long. ]
Do they have any Cantonese songs?
[ Because as good as he is in English, he's still much more comfortable singing in Cantonese since it's his native tongue. ]
no subject
Mmmmm, they mostly have some really old ballads. But... I have my phone.
[Li-Na brandishes her cell phone, which is full of artists like Eason Chan, Joey Yung, Gillian Chung, and several bands]
Let me get to my Cantonese folder...
