Fishing Trip and Assorted Discussions [Open]
WHO: Togusa and Open, with one closed prompt.
WHERE: Open prompts are in Pesgare.
WHEN: Before the 9th.
WHAT: Togusa showing other people the town he helped out, and taking a load off (before everything goes to crap in the middle of the month.)
WARNINGS: Rampant discussions of mind-body dualism and the meaning of identity?
Pesgare:
Togusa was eager to return to Pesgare, as soon as he could get away with it for a few days from work. Anyone who mentioned that they could use a few days of quiet got invited to go along with him. Although Pesgare is a smaller fishing and trading village, it still counts as civilization, rather than some of the other recently discovered areas in the middle of nowhere. There are people, and good food, and the entire pace of the town is far more relaxed than in Recolle. At least, now that there isn't a storm coming in, everything is far more relaxed. Togusa likes it here, he comes alive like there's a weight lifted off his shoulders. It's easy to find a sense of purpose here, to find an excuse to help people in the town.
He brought along a pack of books (and a few choice musical albums...) to trade for anything he hasn't read before, things he isn't sure if he could get back at Recolle. Everyone that Togusa runs into is very open and friendly, as a matter of course, but a few people around the town seem to recognize Togusa, personally, brightening up a little when they see him.
Then, of course, the main reason he came here: the fishing. Fishing with Sora was a great joy, and he wanted to try it out again. Especially since the mix of fish that seem to be able to be caught around here are unlike what you could find anywhere else. Cold- and warm-water fish swimming around in harmony. The tradeoff, though, is that the fish are far smarter than they really have any right to be, and any fishers will have to be quite lucky to get a catch.
[OOC: Not playing with the rain effects from the main log, I'm terrible at lyric-writing on the fly.]
Closed to Yoon-Sung: CUBEenix Offices:
It was incredibly kind of Yoon-sung to offer to help Togusa out with security in his cyberbrain. He has also discussed this with Noctis, who might have a piece of software that would be able to help. But Togusa has no idea if anything can even be installed onto him, so to speak.
But Yoon-sung has made the most progress at understanding the way that data outputs on Togusa's cyberbrain, and he's proven himself to be a good friend. So, Togusa will start here. This whole discussion became more urgent after one too many memory regains. He has a duffel bag slung over his shoulder, carrying all of the hardware that Retrospec has seen fit to give back to him, just in case it would help Yoon-sung out at all. There is a tension that stays in his form as he makes his way up to Yoon-sung's office.

The office was in it's usual state of frenzied chaos with the added sounds of a bunch of people playing some game that involved dancing to cheesy kpop music and being encouraged by sweet girl voices. Yoon-sung was at his desk attempting to make a wall out of pens, but at Togusa's appearance he tries to sweep them all up and dump them into a desk drawer. Which just meant that there were suddenly pens all over around him while he tried to not start laughing at himself.
"Hi."
no subject
"Hey." The corner of his mouth can't help but quirk up in an almost-laugh.
"I guess...you know what I'm here for." Togusa slides the duffel bag off his shoulder. "I've brought along everything I can that might help you connect. So." He spreads his hands out in a shrug, before casually dropping down into a chair.
"Every time I think about this, I'm torn between how absolutely cool this is, and how scary it is that it's my own brain."
no subject
"It's cool. It's so cool that I silently have geek moments of glee thinking about getting my cyber fingers on that brain again."
He picked up the pens so he doesn't trip over them and tossed them to where they would be out of his way and gave his desk a critical stare before going to unearth his gear.
"What happened that made you change your mind? Not another 'Oppa' instance?"
no subject
He has to laugh. "Okay. Okay, it's cool. The fact that you're always asking first, instead of just going ahead and experimenting puts me more at ease."
But his question is a good one. "No real incident, just a- remembered one." His brow furrows tightly, how to explain this? "It was a memory. The other Togusa, he and his team, the ones I've seen a few times, they were raiding a place. All the workers at an establishment had turned on the guests. They attacked, and turned it into a hostage situation."
"But the workers weren't the problem. It was somebody else in a complete other location, he had them all hacked. I didn't know that was possible on such a big scale."
no subject
He was half-teasing about that even as he dug out the case with his not-really-the-best-but-still-good-enough computer and plugged it together before turning it on. Stretching a little while it warmed up, he went to look at the gear Togusa brought, frowning slightly at some of the pieces.
"Ah, so a memory of an incident that you don't want a repeat of, huh?" At least some of the plugs looked normal enough; he could work with them, he hoped.
"Actually... if the workers were all hooked into the same system, all the hacker would need to do is hack that single system and hijack them through their links. It's the reason why I have measures on my mainframe to shut it completely off the grid if I suspect an outside attack. Sure, it's completely crazy to go dark, but I rather go dark than allow any of my users get hurt because I don't want to deal with the fallout."
no subject
The hookups between most of the gear are standard, except for the way the external memory drive hooks onto Togusa, himself. There's a small helmet aparatus, more of a visor, really, that plugs into the dummy barrier for the back of his neck. Would be easy to imagine a person it could plug more directly into, though.
Togusa listens carefully, and he nods a few times. "Maybe that's what it was, then. Security risk because they were all plugged into something at their jobs. Should keep to my instinct, then, I've been trying not to connect to too many outside sources. And not maintain any of those connections."
A frown, and he shifts uncomfortably. "Retrospec, of course, being the exception. I'm only as secure as they are."
no subject
Quickly he added the hookups to his system, clicking through the menus and clearing the steps to have them added. He ran a couple tests to make sure the connections were secured and then looked over to Togusa.
"Well depending on what they were doing, they could have been connected to a menu, or a program for bill paying, or any number of items needed for accessing quickly to make their jobs move smoothly.
"As for Retrospec, I think that the programming behind it is as safe or safer than anything on our user level. It might be open to other forms of attack, but it's something that could just skip over the user level in order to attack what they are after."
no subject
A very long breath out, and Togusa puts a hand to the back of his neck. "Let me get hooked up here, but then, what are you going to try first? I don't know how much I'm going to understand of anything I see."
He is still clearly nervous, as he hooks himself up. The dummy barrier fits snugly around the back of his neck, and then he puts the external memory drive's headpiece in place, but doesn't lower the visor yet, still looking to Yoon-sung for guidance.
no subject
He waits for Togusa to get the system hooked up to him, running through a couple programs on his end to double check his safety nets and then takes out a disc from the case. Spinning it around he set it gently to the side, and exhales slowly.
"First will be a few menus like what you get from opening any computer program. Once I go through them, things will get a little messy; it will look like random typing and code but don't worry. Even if it looks really fast to you, I know what I'm looking for and what I'm going to need to isolate. Once I get an idea of what to use, I'll be loading the program on this disc, which usually means that there will be flickering on a screen and some resizing of images. I'm not sure how it will look through your eyes, but I will be monitoring on my side as well.
"But in any moment it feels weird like the beginning of a stroke or something, tell me. Okay?"
no subject
Togusa nods very slowly in understanding, it does make sense to him. Then Yoon-sung gets to that last bit, and all that tension is right back. Togusa's nod is sharp. "Okay." But his hand clenches on the arm-rest of the chair. It's all a reminder that this is the best chance of success for Togusa, but also anything could go very very wrong anyway.
"Okay." He repeats, like he's talking himself into it, too. He drops the visor, and leans back in the chair. His whole body is still held with tension, but it's as much as he can relax. "Just- give me a warning."
no subject
That was a cool word and Yoon-sung had to take a few moments of quiet geeking out over the brain bots before focusing on the task at hand. He waited for Togusa to get as settled as much as he could get settled and then started opening up the connection between his kit and Togusa's mind.
The language between the two different computers were varied, but it all was the same under the interface. Yoon-sung clicked quickly through the swirling menus, pulling up some items and closing others. He wished he had his virtual setup here in his office, but that was layers underground and he wanted Togusa to feel some comfort with the sunlight and fresh air accessible in his office. So he had to rely on his typing skills, sliding over the menus and clicking open instead of using his fingers to play.
But soon he was past the menus and into the meat of the programming, symbols flying by as he typed away, working on getting to where he needed to go. Then that slowed and he was at the right path and humming to himself at the information dug up.
"Okay, I've got everything ready on my end, so here comes the program insertion. Are you ready?"
no subject
More than anything else, it's the time passing that starts to get Togusa to relax, because he just cannot keep himself held that tense for that long. The menus flit open and closed, more of that odd bar-code language in front of his eyes. His brain has the programming to read it, but it just moves too fast for him to focus on any of it.
None of it resolves into something familiar. Whatever Yoon-sung is accessing, it's not a memory replaying or a picture he's taken. Just- what? Background data of the other processes of his brain? Yoon-sung does technically have access to everything.
It's paused on one particular screen, the center view open with more little windows off to the sides filled with that language than Togusa can count. Togusa nods slightly. "I'm ready. Do I get to know what it is before it hits?"
So, with the structuring of Togusa's 'mainframe,' for lack of a better term? There's plenty of room to install things. But the question remains in how it's going to interact with Togusa's cyberbrain.
no subject
And of course it sounded like the shadiest thing ever, like some back alley con artist trying to sell someone some used 'made by my mate Mate' stuff from the back of a rusty motorcycle, but it wasn't that at all. Yoon-sung might have cobbled it from codes he had, but they weren't bad codes. He just made it sound bad.
"But you should just see the loading start and then things will flash weird as they readjust the settings to match with their codes."
The disc went in and he started the load, watching everything on his end as it went through the upload. He just hoped Togusa wouldn't get sick from this.
no subject
The screens look strange, and this time Togusa is actively trying to read as things go by. "It's latching on...oh!" It's hard to explain as quickly as the load is happening, but Yoon-sung can see it, too. The program is attaching to the networking part of the micromachine programming; the part that links to an external system.
"I get it," Togusa mutters. "It still recognizes each of the machines as part of the same system, so it's not interfering with their ability to talk to each other. I think." One hand drums on the arm of his chair, fingers moving to make sure that he still can. It's not interfering with the download, so Togusa can guess that means his physical functions are unaffected.
no subject
So that meant the programming will spread along the rest of the bots and help build up a screening process for possible outside attacks. The main programming would probably need regular updates once the installation is complete, but that was the same with all the other security programs out there. Once the installation was complete, Yoon-sung ran a quick test to make sure it was settling in okay, and they closed out of everything.
"And there we go. How does it feel on your end?"
no subject
He finally pushes the visor back up so he can look at Yoon-sung fully. "If it's not interfering with anything, just running in the background, that's good, right? It should only pop up if someone else is trying to get in, or if I try to connect to something I shouldn't?"
no subject
Yoon-sung unplugged his system and started tucking away his half of the gear, putting it all back into the case he carried it all in.
"In theory it should work like any other ad-blocker and malware stopper. I place a couple warnings into the coding so that if they stumble against something malicious, they should warn you and try to defend, but you never know until you actually come across that. I have some for testing if you wanted to try, but that's all downstairs in the hub."
no subject
Togusa starts to do the same, removing the visor and dummy barrier, folding it all up back into the case. He is considering Yoon-sung’s words carefully. It’s scary, but it would make a lot more sense to test it out, wouldn’t it? He eventually very slowly nods, before getting more decisive. “Yeah. We should, if it’s not too much trouble. Get to see your own handiwork in action, at least?”
no subject
He glances up at Togusa, a smile on his lips. "You seem to really like it here."
no subject
But Koutarou might recognize what he's seeing in Togusa, it's closer to how he used to look back in school, with less responsibility on his shoulders. Not a shirking of responsibility, but he doesn't have the sensation that everything around him is his fault to fix.
"You can really see the impact of what you're doing," Togusa suggests. "Even a little bit of helping people? Everyone was very grateful for it." He's keeping a hand on his pole, but he's not really paying any better attention to it than Koutarou is.
no subject
"That is special. This sort of place is more like in the old days, it's charming and the society here is warm."
Somehow he can't keep nostalgia out of his voice. Even though he's a city boy and never lived on the country side.
no subject
"I'm glad you like it here." Togusa does sound delighted about it. "It's not for everyone, a few of our group members were quite miserable," another chuckle at the memory. "But you're very right. You might still be able to find some fishing villages back home like this."
Togusa leans back and leans his weight on one hand behind him. He hasn't taken notice of Koutarou drawing him, so his posture stays natural. "Not a city like what I've visited before," a glance at Koutarou, "have you?"
no subject
"Yeah it's," the pen pauses on the paper. "perhaps not a place for people who need speed and a lot of activity." But things doesn't always have to happen and there doesn't always have to be new things going on.
He draws in a sharp breath when images and feelings pour into him. He rubs his face with a hand, which gets graphite on his face--not that that is anything new. He swallows down the guilt that he doesn't know the entire story behind and the loss he's already far too familiar with.
"Not any fishing cities and not me personally, but the other me apparently went to live in the mountains, where it was similar in spirit."
no subject
Oops, Togusa catches that tension in Koutarou that he didn't mean to spark, he has to think of a way to divert the topic onto gentler ground. Koutarou answers, though, and Togusa nods gently. "I guess the mountains lend themselves to that, too. The- place I saw, in your dream, it was quiet like this, yeah."
"I- think the guy I'm seeing, he was in a big city, too. But it's weird, because, it was Niihama." He looks away from his fishing rod in puzzlement. "Which, that's not that big now, it's too isolated to be a huge city?"
no subject
He smiles awkwardly for a brief moment, shakes his head to get out thoughts he doesn't need at the moment. "It was a cheap place in the dead of night, after everyone had gone to sleep or to work. That was what I was doing too."
Koutarou frowns in thought. "The only reason it would be bigger if it's developed but...it would take time for that.." He scrutinized his friend. "I'd say you're remembering the future but that would not really match up with the remembering previous lives theory. Though maybe you have visions of a coming life instead."
no subject
"Hunh. Is that why you think I'm having, I'll admit, a lot more trouble accepting what I'm seeing than you are, for example?" He gestures to Koutarou with one hand. "Sometimes I wish I could be as at peace with what I'm seeing as you seem." He knows Koutarou is still conflicted, in many ways, but not with the idea that he is different than his other self.
"It still. I want to help this man I'm seeing. If it really is a soul that is not at rest, and the attachment to me is drawing him in? Then. I'm actually okay helping Retrospec's process. I just wish-" He looks up at Koutarou more solidly. "I wish they had a more peaceful way to go about it."
no subject
"It might be. Stranger things might be harder to accept." He shakes his head. "I'm not at peace with everything, but I'm coming to terms with it. And many of them are good memories." Though naturally there are bad ones, particularly after a year of getting them dropping into their heads at random moments. "Hopefully, you'll be able to take them with a bit more ease as well, at some point."
no subject
"So tell me a good one, then," Togusa suggests. "What's something that you're remembering that never fails to make you happy?" There haven't been too many completely positive memories from the other Togusa. Some good things. But he still isn't clear on what the man really values.
no subject
"A good memory of the other me's?" There are several, really, --though there's a lot of negative ones too -- but what to choose.. He looks out at the little floaty thing attached to the fishing line, bobbing on the water surface, pursing his lips in thought. "When Chie-san gave me the gloxinia that Retrospec sent me some months back. We were so young and happy and free, back then." And he sounds like an old man reminiscing about his youth. Which he technically is - was - since he has remembered his death as an old man.
no subject
Koutarou, Togusa has often gotten a feeling of an old soul in a young body from him, at times. And then, the exact opposite feeling, of a very young and free spirit who has so little to be concerned with. Both feelings make Togusa happy for his friend, honestly.
"I've gotten some very fulfilled memories from the other Togusa," Togusa admits. "Doing his job. But I'm not sure of what makes him really happy. Yet."
no subject
"His job might make him happy, right? And eventually you should learn other things as well."
no subject
"Maybe. I just need to know more about him. His world is so- fantastical, that alone is hard to absorb. A lot of people are connected, the way I am. Almost like everybody could talk with everyone, the way you and I could just think at each other, all the way back in August? I like that."
no subject
"Hmm.. Is it old-fashioned of me to think that it sounds a bit scary to be so connected all the time?" He chuckles a little. "But I guess that's not strange for someone who's terrible at technology." It's not like he had a chance of familiarizing himself much with things like computers and phones growing up though, considering how his father looked at technology. He leans back with a hand just behind him as support. "A high-tech or magical world, then?"
no subject
He shrugs slowly. "There would have to still be people like you. Or, like my grandmother, living in a small village. Especially since he was still living in Japan. A high-tech Japan, to answer your question. Tradition doesn't vanish overnight."
"So I know it has to be there, a way to disconnect. But maybe this other Togusa wasn't the sort of guy who could afford to."
no subject
"Even if there were ways to disconnect, or to not be connected at all, there is no guarantee that those who chose that would not be ostracized by society. If it's a society where technology is part of everyday life even more than it is here, on a deeper, wider scale, people like me or your grandmother who wouldn't want to be involved would be the odd ones out."
He shakes his head to clear it. His mind had been heading in a direction he would prefer it didn't.
"What is your theory on why he might not be able to afford it?"
no subject
Togusa hesitates, and he thinks for a few seconds. "It does go back to his job. I know he didn't work alone. And he's taken on some- serious cases. So I could see if he needed to maintain that mental communication a lot with his superiors."
"I remembered his-" Togusa's face falls, and he laughs at himself. "Oh no, I did forget to mention this. I swear this was an accident! But I remembered his superior officer, a man whose face I've seen in a few memories? And his name turned out to be Daisuke Aramaki." He covers half his face with a hand. "This guy that the other Togusa respects a lot, and I gave my dog the same name!"
no subject
"If there is tech like that, phones ought to exist as well." Just saying. "But I see your point."
He laughs. "Accident or not, that's amazing." He turns a mischievous look up at him. "If you are entirely certain it was an accident."
