24 Hours [Open]
WHO: Togusa and you!
WHERE: Mostly the Precinct
WHEN: 2/15 noon to 2/16 noon
WHAT: How much work can Togusa get done to prepare to put a guy in jail who really deserves it?
WARNINGS: Potential discussions of domestic violence situation
Togusa took very little time once he got back to the city. Enough time to briefly run by home (Sora would get a sudden feeling of excitement and adoration through their link, coupled with what is definitely the feeling of getting his face licked a lot by a puppy). But then to work.
Togusa is in civvies, he's not supposed to be here, but there are papers scattered on his desk. But his manner isn't of someone who wants to be left alone to work. The exact opposite, in fact. Anyone who comes over to talk to him, or even stands still for too long, is in danger of getting roped in. Grabbing a piece of paper for him, check his work on something. Whatever Togusa is up to, he seems to need to get it done very quickly, so he'll take any and all help. Carlisle gave him 24 hours, so he'll do as much as he can, and then pass a few things off to people who are going to still be in the city for the rest of the month.
There's a man out there who has this coming.

For Cleo
I have something for you, but you have to come by the Department for it. I'm getting to work on the other lead you sent me while I have the chance.

But she's all business despite that when she sees Togusa.]
Reporting as requested, sir.

He nods at her, and stands up from his desk when she arrives. "Thank you for coming in. And, thank you for alerting me to- Todoroki," his voice drops a little, and he gestures at the papers covering his work space. "I'm doing anything that I can to prepare, getting any loopholes out of the way, so that when everyone is back, we can just move on this."
no subject
"Thank you, sir." She says it, but her voice is, well. Distracted. She wants to move on Todoroki now, but she can't, she has too much else to do, things that will save lives, but...
She shakes her head, as if to clear it. "I'll have a full report on my activities in the north ready when I return next, as well. Do you need to be debriefed on what has happened until now?"
no subject
"We screw up, the best case scenario is if Shouto goes rogue and attacks this guy with his abilities. And that'll hurt Shouto just as much." Too young. He shouldn't have to take things into his own hands.
Togusa's shoulders relax. "That- wasn't why I called you here, though. I mean, it's why it had to be here, because I'm not leaving yet."
no subject
That said, the surprise lets her tone it down some, as she looks him over, and then understanding dawns. "Is it what I asked before?"
no subject
But the topic at hand is important. Togusa nods sharply. "Yes," he gestures towards the back of the building. "If you'd follow me?"
He doesn't say anything more, not in front of the other officers in the bullpen, but when they get to the back, he holds open the door to the indoor range for her.
no subject
She studies the area with a grim expression, though. She knows what this means, and she turns to look at Togusa. "Are you going to teach me how to use one, sir?"
no subject
Togusa walks over to the nearest bench, and he puts his hands on it. "Officially, I can't loan you one of the Department's guns, nor my sidearm. So I've really only got one option left."
He reaches behind himself, pulls up the back of his jacket to reveal the revolver sitting at the small of his back. He unclips the holster from his belt and carefully puts it down on the bench, slides it towards Cleo. His gun, Togusa's gun, the one he received from Retrospec.
no subject
"If it's ear protection, I do have... some." Setting the gun back down, she reaches into one of her pockets, and holds out... Well, they're noise-cancelling headphones, made to clip onto her ears. "Leo has been an incredible help in getting me accommodations for what Retrospec is doing."
But that done, she focuses back on the gun. She knows what this means. Togusa is arming her in a way that is possibly not legal, but it is absolutely necessary for what she may encounter. If she messes this up, it could land both of them in serious trouble.
no subject
It's more important that she come back alive.
"I'm not sure how much good those will be," Togusa has to admit of the headphones. "They might do nothing at all."
He gestures, and takes back the gun for a second, carefully pulls it from the leather holster. "The Mateba M2008. It's got six shots, and it packs more of a punch than it looks like it's going to." He pops the cylinder, to show Cleo how to do it. "It's got a sport configuration, so it auto-feeds the next shot, and the short of it is that it'll fire those six shots faster than your standard revolver." He closes the cylinder again, empty, and passes it over to Cleo.

She takes the gun. She's hung around Tatsuo enough to know the basics of gun safety for a cop, not to mention her entire job shadow program. She takes it, feels the weight of it, but she keeps her finger away from the trigger.
"Arm steady." She murmurs to herself as she takes it. "One arm on the butt for support, one holding the grip. Finger off the trigger unless you are actively firing. Aim along the sight. Squeeze the trigger, not pull. Do not lock your elbows when firing. A gun is always loaded, even when it's not. A gun is always primed to fire, even when it's not. Don't ever point it at something you don't want dead."
Her mutterings are gun safety things she's looked up herself. Independent research, she felt, was probably important, especially since she's missing so much of academy to do this. Repetition helps commit it to memory, and of course, letting Togusa know she studied helps.

"This is one instance where your strength can actually get in your way," Togusa points out. "Focusing on only moving the trigger is the real trick of it. If you find your shots are pulling wide," Togusa takes her hand, and mimes the gun jerking to the right, "you're using too much strength. Try to relax your grip some if that happens."
He has so little time to maybe try to prepare her. Any advice he can think of is going to spill out of him, but if he does so, it'll just overwhelm her with information, and he knows it. So he sighs, puts a hand on his hip.
His voice softens, less the Officer and more of Togusa. "Are...you going to need it? Are things that dangerous on your end?"
no subject
But then his next question stops her. She lowers her head.
"... They are." She closes her eyes, and takes a deep breath. At once, the emotion leaves her voice, like she's simply letting it go as unnecessary, as she automatically sorts and filters the information in her head. When she speaks again, her voice is calm, professional, as she debriefs Togusa like an experienced soldier.
"The villagers we found are being run out of their homes by wolves, which kill livestock and steal food. We fought wolf-like shadow monsters that attacked any source of light, and whatever they touched became cold, like their touch stole heat. The villagers are secretive enough that we know they are hiding more, but I'm not certain what yet."
A deep breath. "We've also found several journals about Fenrir, the wolf from Norse mythos, and found a few bizarre effects thereof. My group in particular made contact with a wolf named Magnus, said to be a descendant of Fenrir in the journal we found. Magnus was friends with an adventurer in the past, but the adventurer was killed on the mountain by 'dark energy', which we will attempt to remove the source of."
That said, she lets out her breath, and a bit of emotion seeps back into her voice. "That said.... I have recovered that adventurer's bones. We may not even know his name, but I would at least like to give him a proper burial."
no subject
And then his face softens to match her own expression. It's a brief surprise, but no, it shouldn't be surprising at all. "That's very kind of you to do," quiet. "Taking the time to honor the dead in the middle of something so important. I hope his spirit can find some rest if you do so."
He nods towards the gun. "Take it. Please try to bring it back. The job ahead of me seems a lot simpler than what you're walking back into."
no subject
That said, she takes the gun reverently, holding it at her side. "I will do everything in my power, sir. And... Simple or not, I hope your mission goes well and peacefully."
no subject
He'll load Cleo up with the holster, and a box of 50 rounds, before he starts to head back to the bullpen. "Come back safe." Quiet, still the man and not the Officer talking, it's more of a hope than an order.
no subject
"Understood, officer." She's hoping if she's light-hearted enough about it, both of them will believe it.

And then he notices he's being watched. Nelson only stands out because 1: he's obviously not one of Togusa's colleagues and 2: he looks the slightest bit familiar, but Togusa can't place from where.
So, work on hold for a second, he stands up and approaches the guy. "Hey. You look a little lost?"

"For some reason, we've had a lot of people who are out, but Kihara down in CSI has been in. He might have run into Murdock more recently." Because of course Matt has been here for the last two weeks. So of course he and Tatsuo have just been hanging out the whole time.

That is a lot of Retrospec users mentioned right in a row, though. Togusa looks at Nelson more curiously. He doesn't recognize him, but is this another user on the app? "Don't know how much use I'll be, I'm getting sent off on assignment again tomorrow."
no subject
"Sounds like everyone is going to busy again tomorrow," he says. He gives Togusa a sideways stare as he starts to suspect the same thing himself. "Some are even camping or spelunking."
no subject
Externally, it looks like nothing changes. But one query from his cyberbrain, and Togusa opens up the Retrospec user list in his field of vision. It just shows up like a heads up display, visible only to him, while he scrolls through the users. There's a reason he hasn't shared with too many people that he can do this.
no subject
"I teach at the local high school. English and drama."
no subject
"So you are on the app," he pitches his voice a little lower down. Togusa tilts his head towards his desk, glances over at the unoccupied seat. "Let's get out of the way, here."
Oh. High school teacher. Togusa pauses, but he steels his breath and takes a gamble. "Do you have a student named Shouto Todoroki?" The look on his face suggests this is a very serious question.
no subject
"Yeah Shouto is one of my students, why do you ask?" He can't imagine him causing any trouble, he has always been well behaved and completes his assignments on time.
no subject
Fuck.
“Something like that.” His tone is a little distracted. “Ah, since this all began I’ve been trying to keep track of who has been coming and going from the platform.” Truth, among his notes are his first few attempts at a user list before he found himself upgraded.
“Shouto is a good kid. He’s- somebody who suddenly got burdened with a lot at once, by Retrospec. How do you think he’s doing?”
no subject
He frowns. "Is Shouto in some sort of trouble?"
no subject
"But, he could definitely use someone extra to keep an eye out for him." There is a touch of concern in his tone that goes beyond just his job as a cop.
