WHO: Ochako and you!
WHERE: subway tunnels
WHEN: morning, Jan 20
WHAT: subway tunnel shenanigans
WARNINGS: none
i. exploring the tunnels
[ School being back in session means that finding the time to explore new developments in the city is getting harder. Between the homework and the extracurriculars and trying to figure out stuff for college, Ochako might be able to squeeze in a little time on the weekends to check out the subways, now that the construction is done. There’s a flashlight in her hand and extra batteries in her bag as she approaches the entrance slowly, as if worried something might jump out at her. But when she sees a faint light in the distance that has nothing to do with her flashlight, she shakes off her doubts and heads inside.
Curiosity has her following that light as it flows down the tunnel, only vaguely taking in the rest of her surroundings until it stops, and fades away as if it were never there. Left in the dark with only the light she holds, Ochako hesitates to go any further. Maybe she should find someone to come down with her and come back later…? But then this will have been a waste, so she steps forward again, slower this time, until she hears a sound. She spins on her heel to look for the source, but it’s too hard to tell where it came from, so she puts on a brave face and calls out into the tunnel: ]
Who’s there?
ii. fine cuisine
[ Once she finds a train, there’s no way she’s leaving it unexplored. It’s creepy, though, seeing all that abandoned stuff in the first car. All of it’s so old, and it makes Ochako wonder exactly what happened that they’d just… leave it all like that. The sleeper car isn’t much better, with the bonus of smelling old and musty, so she hurries through.
The kitchen car looks pretty gross at first sight, but to be honest… going through all these dusty old train cars and tunnels is making Ochako thirsty, and she hadn’t thought to bring anything to drink of her own. Pinching her nose to pretend the spoiled food sitting out doesn’t stink, she starts to look through the cabinets. At first she finds nothing of interest, just more expired foods she wouldn’t dare to touch, but then - is that Freshens? She grabs the bottle to examine the label and somehow, it’s still good. With a sigh of relief, she twists off the top and downs a third of the bottle in one gulp.
Ginger ale. Not the worst thing she could have found here. And she doesn’t even seem to notice that she’s starting to turn invisible. ]
iii. runaway train
[ The next car is far more interesting than the others. There are instruments and things everywhere! No sign of their owners or anything, but at least they aren’t abandoned suitcases. She doesn’t even know what half of these instruments are, but she was never a musician, so she occupies herself with the records instead.
The only problem: most of them are pretty faded. Records are pretty old, after all, and it looks like whoever owned these once upon a time didn’t bother to take proper care of them. Many of them are warped, with the cases faded or scratched off due to age and wear. It’s hard to even read some of them, to see what band they’re from or anything. There are a few that look salvageable though, so she’s collecting them in a small pile on top of the piano.
She’s squinting at yet another case when she hears someone else step inside the car, but Ochako doesn’t look up yet. Another moment or two and she figures she can’t actually make out the label, and goes to set it aside when the door suddenly slams shut. Her pile of records topples over as she nearly jumps out of her skin, spinning to face the offender while clutching at her chest with one hand. ]
Y-You nearly gave me a heart attack! Did you have to slam it like that?
iv. grand central
Woooow! This place is huge!
[ She pauses to marvel at the echo. It’s amazing how a place so huge, with so much going on - look at those shops, it’s like there’s a whole mall under here! - is so empty. There’s no one here but people who must have came in on the train just like her. How could they have all this and yet no one here? Who’s managing the shops? After wandering aimlessly for a while, she spots a familiar symbol in blue and heads over. ]
Retrospec’s here too…?
[ None of the travel guides really stand out to her, so Ochako bypasses those and heads for the book on the table. A quick flip through gives a quick history that leaves her feeling unsettled, especially when she sees the end. ]
Travelers from other worlds? Rewrite history? But… none of that’s possible, is it?
[ But it seems to be in line with some of the things people have told her up to now. Still… there’s no explanation for how something like that could be real. ]

[ Whether or not Ochako was expecting someone to speak up when she asked that question, there's someone there now. ]

I just wonder how it’d work, you know? Like, how is someone supposed to travel between worlds, anyway?
The thing about rewriting history, though… [ She shakes her head. ] If they could do something like that, wouldn’t they have done it already? Why wouldn’t they do that for the people they say lost their planets? They should just be able to fix it.

[ While Mio is curious about the whole thing herself, too, she also thinks that she wouldn't really understand it if she found out. ]
It might be a little more complex than that? I mean, I know nothing about rewriting history or anything, though.

You just keep running into places you're not supposed to be at, don't ya?
no subject
Guess that makes two of us. It’s not like I’m doing anything wrong.
[ Her question about why he’s down here will remain unspoken, at least for now. ]
no subject
Not unless we're counting running around some freaky tunnels that are made by god knows who and lead to god knows where, creepy "forgotten" cars included.
[Kirishima sighs and shakes his head, lips pulled into a pout while his brows knot into a frown.]
I can't search for you all, dammit. Did you find anything here? Hidden treasures, clues what happened, people?
no subject
[ It’s not like there’s anyone else down here, anyways. The biggest danger is twisting her ankle and having no phone service to call for help. ]
Just a bunch of abandoned old junk. Old suitcases, newspapers, that one car had a bunch of gross old food in it… All of these.
[ She gives a small sigh of her own as she places the final records on top of the pile. ]
There’s no sign that anyone else has been down here in years, though. It’s like all the passengers just disappeared or something. I wonder what happened to them.

[That's a seriously strange idea.
He gives the records a curious look but doesn't come close enough to touch them, the memories of another lifetime and fatal to touch strange things weighting heavy on his mind. Instead he lingers close to the exit of the car, but also seems to try and keep out of the reach of anything that might try to just reach through that opening. All those abandoned things are seriously giving him the chills.]
Maybe the same thing that also happened to us.

[ She's going to potshot one of these records into your face Cutter! ...Okay maybe she won't but it's a little tempting. ]
You mean all that "other world" stuff? I thought they said those worlds were destroyed. That sounded pretty final, like everything blew up. I wouldn't think it would leave this much stuff behind.
[ Excuse Ochako while she picks her way around all the dusty equipment to the clear part of the car. There's no reason for them to stay if there's nothing here, after all. She pauses when music starts to filter into the car, muted and crackling as if through a faulty intercom. Turning toward Cutter, she starts to ask: ]
Did you -
[ - ah. Not Cutter then. He's standing too far away to have hit a play button on anything. So instead of continuing that train of thought, Ochako simply wrinkles her nose. ]
This song is awful.

[He is worried, okay? She wasn't at home either, which doesn't have to mean much, but... Yeah.]
No, I did not.
[He startled visibly when the music gets playing and it turns out that it wasn't Ochako touching things that has caused it. Kirishima doesn't think long as he walks up to her and puts himself so that he can jump in front of her and defend should it be necessary.]
I'm pretty sure that if they have a way to make people come they must have also tried to figure out ways to make people leave - and call me Kirishima.
