The Stardust

[A combination roller rink, ice rink, and bowling alley, the Stardust is one of those venues where if you run out of things to do, you have no one to blame but yourself. It's the last Friday of winter vacation, and they're going to see it out in style.

Ami's mom drops her off by herself; her lusus is staying home this time. After some texting back and forth to pinpoint each other, we'll say they meet up at the snack bar area or thereabouts. She's never met James's sister before and in fact does not recall her name, but James himself isn't hard to pick out.]

Heyyy! [She grins and waves as she approaches.]

Monday, Jan 08 - Noah
Big Bang Burger

[First day back at school! BLUH! But hey, she survived, and now it's burger time. She purposely skipped lunch so she'd have room, but that does mean she's very hungry by the end of the school day, when she meets up with Noah at the aforementioned burger joint. (Her lusus is along for this, wearing her lil red SERVICE DOG vest.)]

Hiya! I hope this place is as good as you said, because I am starving.

[ When the Barnes kids approach, Becca is leading her brother along with her hand on his wrist. James waves back to Ami. ]

Hey.

[ Well. First thing's first. He gestures to both Ami and his sister. ]

Becca, Ami. Ami, Becca. You guys are in the same grade, right? Freshmen?

[Huh, who's chaperoning whom here.....? Still, Ami nods.]

Oh, yeah! We're in the same gym class, aren't we? [One of those big group classes where everyone sort of exists peripherally to each other.] Nice to meet you for real finally!

Oh my god Bucky. Did you corrupt her? You corrupted her, didn't you.

[ She speaks at first to James, her tone light and joking, but then actually addresses Ami directly. ]

Yeah, I've seen you around in gym before too. I almost didn't recognize you out of gym uniform.

[ James can't help but smile a little at that. One would think that living under the same roof as a Hot Topic junkie would desensitize her to this, but as it turns out, being next to two Hot Topic junkies is like ascending to a new plane of gothliness. ]

[Ami laughs.] Don't give him that much credit! I am perfectly capable of corrupting myself, I'll have you know.

[She's joking too, of course. Anyway, eager to get going with the fun times, she bounces on her feet and lightly claps her hands a couple times.]

So what would you guys like to start with? Skating or bowling?

[ Becca gets a sly grin on her face, especially when she peers over her shoulder at her brother. ]

Why not both at the same time?

[ LIVE LIFE TO THE MAX. ]

Haha, is that even allowed?

[No of course it's not, what a stupid question. Because if it was allowed, someone could get seriously hurt!]

Or, I mean... we don't want anybody else to lose any limbs!

[ Becca's grin becomes strained, and James squints and scowls at Ami. ]

Hey. Only the amputee gets to make limb jokes, got it?

[ He holds the scowl a few moments longer before relaxing. ]

Nah, I'm just messing with you. [ Becca laughs a little nervously. ] Skating. Let's do skating. I suck at bowling right-handed.

[Ami's smile falters, too.] Ahah... right, sorry. [Gonna just mentally kick herself for a sec. Good one, Ami, way to be appropriate! What a great first impression.]

Alright! Um, yeah, cool. Skating! Let's go get our foot wheels on.

[Pumps her fist in the air! WE CAN STILL SAVE THIS AWKWARD INTERACTION...

Fortunately there's no line at the skate rental counter, so everybody will have their foot wheels in short order and I'm sure we can skip right to putting them on and stuff.]

So by the time James is all laced up into his skates, he's immediately up on his feet and raring to get onto the track. He can count the number of times he's done this before on one hand, but he's able to maintain his balance pretty well.

Becca, on the other hand, is having a bit harder of a time and basically clings to the wall of the skate rink, trying to figure out how to stay on her feet independently. James looks over at Ami. ]

You ready yet?

Yeah, just a sec!

[Her skates came laced really tight for some reason and she practically had to re-lace them to get them on her feet, which is probably how the guy doing it one-handed got his done first. But presently she finishes tying them and gets up. It's a little awkward at first, but she gets her balance pretty quickly and heads to the rink entrance.]

This is gonna be interesting. I haven't been here in, like, a year.

[ excuse u, he's actually quite good at tying his shoes two-handed with the prosthetic, THANK U VERY MUCH, he worked very hard to learn to do that!!! ]

Oh yeah? Well, we've never been here before, but I bet we could wipe the floor with you anyway.

Not like either of the siblings got the notice though, because James offers up his hand to Becca, who high fives it. They both give Ami a competitive look. ]

What, we're racing now? You guys sure about that? Maybe I developed super-speed powers over break, you don't know.

[she didn't, that is 100% a joke.]

[ James's expression is a little pained at that, thinking suddenly about how Becca doesn't know anything about Retrospec or the strange superpowers and physical changes they've been going through. But Becca doesn't seem to mind--in fact, she laughs. ]

Yeah, well I installed engines into my skates, so who's got the real powers now?

[ Ah, of course she'd take it as a regular joke. James relaxes a little. ]

See what you're up against? We bring our A-game.

[Becca come on, don't make this Air Gear, we've got enough bullshit on our plates without switching bodies with Obama.]

I've got an "A" for ya. ¡Adios!

[With that, she strikes out onto the rink, wobbles, flails, overcorrects, almost falls backwards, but then finally starts making progress in a forwardly direction. She's not fast, but she's not stuck to the wall, either.]

[ Well, Ami certainly had the element of surprise over them. By the time James ushers Becca and the two kids start moving, Ami's already taken to the rink.

Luckily, though, James adjusts to the rink a little better. He's no expert in skates, but he has an uncanny good sense of balance and doesn't have any issues taking his first strides. In fact, he's now rapidly catching up.

(Poor Becca, on the other hand, is stuck to the wall, looking like her legs are made of gelatin and her skates might roll any which way, taking her feet with them.) ]

[Ami glances over her shoulder, and sees James quickly gaining on her! She laughs and puts on a little more speed, but not enough to outpace him.

There's only one thing to do: SABOTAGE! ... Just kidding. It's not gonna break her heart if and when he passes her. He's the athlete, after all, he is generally going to win in physical contests.]

[ Well it's no fun if someone's not gonna actually compete! James zooms past her, but looks over his shoulder and realizes she's not taking this race all that seriously. Well, then, neither is he. May as well have some fun with it.

As he rounds back to the entrance, he realizes Becca is still struggling there and ends up taking her by the wrist and zooming forward, dragging her along. She is clearly not comfortable with this and barely keeping her balance, but at least she's moving now. James calls out to Ami. ]

You wanna make this a train?

[ Becca catches his meaning and holds her arm out, hand wiggling, for Ami to take it. If she can close the distance between them, that is. ]

[Noah ate his lunch, but he was hungry once more. He walks up, with Timcanpy on his shoulder, whose wearing a little hat with a flashlight on it. Because Tim is all about being helpful. When he sees Ami and her lusus, he'll give a nod and reach out a gloved hand to pet the lusus]

It is, don't worry, It's my favourite burger place.

[Omg Tim's hat is the cutest fucking thing though?? Ami giggles when she notices that, and points to it.]

Is that a little miner hat? That's amazing.

[Meanwhile, Rammom accepts the pets and trills happily. She will also be sniffing around at his coat pockets, though. (Yummies? Got yummies again? Where yummies?) Ami gently tugs on her vest to discourage her.] Cut it out, mom.

[Timcanpy grins when his hat gets complimented] Yeah. Got it at a toy store.

[And aw there's--

Wait.]

Did you just call her "mom"?

[Wow Timcanpy's grin is kinda creepy?? (She loves it though. #aesthetic)

Ami freezes.] Ah... did I? [She forces an embarrassed half-grin and shrugs.] Sorry, bad habit. She's - well, you know about the whole past-me-was-an-alien thing, right?

[This is why you're his favorite little sister Ami. Same aesthetic]

Uh, right...?

Right, well. Trolls don't have parents like humans do. They're raised by, like... semi-wild animals. Lususes. Lusii? So she's pretty much Aradia's mom.

[Say, it's chilly out here, let's go on in. Ami will hold the door.]

I mean, I've tried to come up with a better name for her, but I can't get it to stick.

[He'll walk in, still staring though as he heads for the counter]

Fuck, seriously?

[laughs] That's just because you eat like one.

I think they're not all the same species, though. Karkat said his was a giant crab monster.

[He can't help his appetite!!]

...That weirdly suits him. I mean it's still fucked up, but it suits him.

'Cause he's a little "crabby"? [Hee hee! What a clever and original joke she just came up with! Mark your fucking calendars, everybody, it's the very first crab joke ever made about Karkat Vantas.] I dunno if he'd be able to pass that off as a dog, though.

[oh look, we're at the counter, let's place our orders. Ami's just gonna get a Normalburger and sweet potato fries.]

[Noah makes a good-natured groan at the pun]

Yeah, something like that.

[For his own order? He's going for the massive Moonburger with a side of fries. Finally, burgers in his size. The cashier is so used to Noah that they barely bat an eye, while at newer employee in the back turns towards them and stares in silent horror.

Noah pays zero attention to the newbie.]

I dunno, I managed to pass Tim off as a bird for months.

[Ami gives the newbie a little shrug and a smile while Noah's not looking, like "welp that's what happens." Paying for food takes place, they get their numbers, and they find a table, all that boring stuff.]

What is he, anyway? I forget if I ever asked that. [She wiggles her fingers at Tim, but keeps them out of biting range.] He looks kind of like those doodads they have at Best Buy, but, like, a premium model, with teeth.

[Woohoo, plastic tables and chairs! Noah will go to sit. ]

That's cause he is one of those doodads. They're golems. [With a bit of pride] Tim's just more advanced than the rest of them.

[Well as long as Noah seems happy to talk about him... Ami rests her chin in her hands, eager to hear it.]

What kind of stuff can he do? Can you make phone calls with him?

Uh, well...no, not calls.

But he's good at navigating! And tracking people! He also records everything he sees.

Everything? Wait, how does he see?

[Noah gives a big "idk" shrug with his arms, and Tim...does the same, with his wings

[okay that makes her giggle. you guys!!

this seems like a good place to skip ahead a little cause i wanna get to burgergeddon. it prolly takes them a while to prep that monsterburger, so in the meantime, smalltalk about the first day of school, complaining about teachers and homework, all that good stuff.

BUT FINALLY: THE PIECE DE RESISTANCE. THE MONSTERBURGER HAS ARRIVED! and so has Ami's normalburger but who cares about that really.]
