[ so there's currently two costumes in Sakutarou's hands-- an elf costume, and a Santa costume. though someone else would have taken the decision on their own of which costume to take, he's going to be kind and let his partner decide.

placing both costumes on a table in the food court, he looks at Junpei, his expression deadpan as he asks the million dollar question. ]

Do you want to be Santa or do you want to be an elf?

Honestly? They're equally humiliating, so I don't really care.

[ How did he get roped into this again... curse his sense of civic duty. ]

Pick whichever one you want. I won't be elf-ish.

[ That pun's probably a bit of a stretch... ]

[ you know what, it's actually close enough for Sakutarou to actually understand. and it actually gets him to huff, amused. ]

That is true.

[ so, with that aside, Sakutarou decides to take the first pick...by taking the fake beard and putting it on. after a moment of adjusting, he says, in his most deadpan voice: ]

Ho ho ho. [ a pause. ] How does that sound?

[ He snorts. ]

Terrible. But I guess it's good enough.

[ He'll take the elf costume by default, though he's not quite putting it on just yet. He has a question about their instructions first... namely, the meaning of "perform". ]

Now, the real question is just what we're supposed to do with these. Are you just supposed to have kids sit on your lap while I'm in the general area, or are we coming up with a Santa rap or something?

[ junpei....actually brings up a point that sakutarou hadn't considered at all. he had just thought that "performing" meant to put on the costumes and play the part of santa and an elf but...what if they want a real performance?

suddenly he feels a bit more nervous about being santa. ]

I don't know. I don't sing, though. Or write lyrics.

Don't think you really need to do any of those for a rap performance.

[ It'd be one thing if they were trying to launch a music career, but for a charity performance? He doubts it'd matter. ]

Still, guess that means they'll have to fill us in when we show up. We're filling our end of the bargain.

[ well, sakutarou has absolutely no plans on launching a career as a singer-- he can barely keep his career as a writer afloat. ]

I guess so. I think we should just do the usual thing that the mall Santas and elves do. If they say we need to change, then we do.

If you want. [ he's not too used to calling the shots. ]

So, letting kids sit on your lap and ask for presents, then? Never heard of mall elves before, but I guess I'll just wing it from there.

[ That's the part he really doesn't get... he figures it would make more sense to have two Santas stationed at opposite sides of the mall, if anything. But this is the task they were given, so he'll give it his best shot regardless. ]

I think the mall elves play the role of the assistants. Getting the kids organized and all that. But if you want, you can sing a song for them.

[ he may be joking... but his expression looks so serious... like he’s seriously suggesting that.

he’s maybe 30% serious. at most. ]

Huh. Maybe that's a new thing... I'm pretty sure they just had bored teenagers directing us when I was a kid.

[ Shrug. Maybe malls are getting fancy these days, he doesn't know. ]

But that's easy enough to do, at least. We'll be one task done in no time.

That would be nice.

[ not that he minds doing the charity work; he chose to do it. but sakutarou definitely wouldn't mind writing one task off their list.

he'll even throw on the red santa jacket above his clothes. ]

So you used to go to the mall Santa as a kid?

When I was like five, yeah. Think it was the thing to do for kids at that age, so my parents took me to shut me up.

[ Shrug. But he'll start putting on his elf costume as well, since there's no real point in delaying the inevitable now. ]

Sounds like that'll be the age range we'll be dealing with today.

[ which...sakutarou actually doesn't mind as much as he thought he would. but then again, it could be because there are no kids yet... ]

Ready to go over and check that for ourselves?

[ Since once they're dressed, he figures there's no point in putting it off any longer. ]

[ sakutarou imagines that this'll be like taking off a bandage. the faster it's done, the easier it'll be to deal with. ]

[ When it comes to cooking, Junpei would consider himself proficient. He's managed to feed himself since college without any incident, which is more than he could say for some of his classmates.

Baking, however, is a different story. He eyes the ingredients for the gingerbread house warily, before turning to his partner. ]

So, uh. Any ideas of where to start?

[ Worst-case, he can pull out his phone and google a recipe, of course. ]

[ oda was born to a family that loved to cook. they makes big meals whenever the occasion arrises, and sakutarou himself had learned to make some of the dishes. mostly curry.

baking, though, he knew nothing about. and gingerbread houses, too...he's only seen those in the shopping mall and on tv. having to make one from scratch is way more than sakutarou thought he would have to do.

maybe they can just buy the cookies... ]

Uh...doesn't the cookie mix box have some instructions? If it does we can use them, maybe...

[ He didn't even realize there was one of those around here... he roots around until he finds it, holding it up triumphantly. ]

Well, that makes things a lot easier. Sounds like we just mix all this stuff together, shape it, bake it, and then build it.

[ ...More or less, anyway. ]

Sounds like it.

[ hopefully nothing is set on fire. but, then again, how bad can making cookies be?

he takes the mix out of the box, emptying it into a bowl. ]

Ever baked cookies before?

[ He'll grab the mix-ins - butter, water, and egg - so that they'll be readily available whenever it's time to add them. ]

..Does Nestle Toll House count?

[ As in... just spooning chocolate-chip cookie dough on a baking tray and then baking it for however long the packaging says... ]

Yeah.

[ because that's about as far as Sakutarou has ever gone in the realm of cookie making. ]

It can't be much different than that...I think. Except these are squares. Or rectangles.

Supposed to be, anyway. If they're anything like normal cookies, they might turn out more like blobs.

[ Or circles... usually they're lopsided circles. ]

You think they would have any trouble with a gingerbread igloo, then?

[ because sakutarou has completely forgotten the concept of cookie molds, it seems. ]

Aren't igloos even more reliant on rectangles than a regular house? They're basically just a bunch of bricks stacked on top of each other.

[ Generally more ice blocks than bricks, sure, but the idea still stands. ]

As long as ours looks like some sort of structure, I bet it'll pass. We can say it's just a house built by a crappy architect or something.

You're not wrong. An author is the farthest thing from an architect that you can get.

[ but...what junpei says does give sakutarou an idea. ]

If we stack them up together we can say it's a building.

I think you mean a demolition crew.

[ That's the literal opposite, after all. ]

But yeah, as long as we stick them together somehow and it stays standing, it should be decent enough.

I think that's what the icing is for.

[ oda shrugs, looking through the shelves for some cookie pans. he takes one out and sets it on the counter. ]

At worst, we can have a cookie tent.

That's not a bad idea, actually. If we just went for a simple gingerbread teepee, it should be easy enough to seal it together with icing and keep it standing.

[ Now, the question is: do they try to make an actual gingerbread house to start with, or do they just take the easy way out? He'll continue to prep the dough for now, since either way they'll need that done. ]

It's a good fallback plan, if nothing else.

We could say that it's an original design.

[ sakutarou goes to pre-heat the oven, also wondering on whether or not to take the easy way out. they could, but at the same time, he feels that it's similar to cheating...

it may sound lame, but sakutarou tries his best to be as honest as possible. ]

I think we should try to make the houses, though.

That's fine with me. Who knows, maybe we'll be better at it than we think?

[ He doubts it, but hey, it's possible. Either way, time to start spreading the dough in the cookie pans to prep it for baking. ]

And we've got a plan B, so we can't go wrong.

[ sakutarou watches junpei spread the dough for a few seconds, unsure of what else to do. might as well ask. ]

What else do we need to do right now?

For the house?

[ Once he's done spreading, he'll pick up the box to double-check. ]

I don't think there's anything else... it just says to bake it and then put it together using the included icing.
