Today is the day. For a few hours in the afternoon those chosen to model for the calendar show up to the photography studio to strike some poses with some adorable animals. Stylists are on standby to do makeup and straighten out that shirt in just the right way. Photographers are raring to start shooting, and their temporary assistants are on standby to adjust the lights, grab water for a tired worker, or help chase after an escaped animal.

i. say cheese!

The model and their animal counterpart are in front of the camera, the photographer has their hand on the button, the makeup and pose is just right! On second thought maybe try a different pose? Better touch up the makeup. Perhaps a prop or different backdrop will add a extra pizzazz.

Or maybe everything is wrong! You may have a difference in opinion with the person you're working with. You might not even be a part of this specific shoot but share you opinion anyway. What was the stylist thinking combing your hair that way? Can you hold that pose for longer than two seconds? Let's spray you with water! Oh dear that puppy is not house broken yet.

ii. chop chop!

We need a Santa hat for the December photograph model! Does anyone have one lying around? It might be time for a run to the store. How about grabbing some snacks? If you end up with a large list of items to fetch you might want to bring a second person with you.

You could be exhausted and in dire need of some help adjusting a light fixture or just getting a drink. Hopefully someone is on hand who can help you with that.

iii. animals!

Animals have minds of their own at times. You might be trying to relax between sessions only to get disturbed by barking puppies or an escaped kitten running by. You might be the one in charge of the animals and have to ask for a little extra help feeding them or getting an excited dog out for a jog around the building so it will sit still. Maybe you're an animal lover and you just can't resist stopping to say hello to the little fur balls. They are all up for adoption you know.

[Save her.

Cleo wasn't even going to be here, she found out it was for the animal shelter, and... Well. She volunteers there often enough she'd feel guilty to not help. So she signed up, thinking it wouldn't be that big a deal...

On the other hand, now she's here, she's wearing more makeup than she thinks she has in her life, she's been sprayed with water, the non-Retrospec photographers and makeup artists keep gaping at her tail and ears... She looks about ready to run away and hide, honestly.

On the other hand, she's getting to show off her muscles, and she's absolutely covered in cats. So it's not all bad. But still, she could probably use a friendly face to help calm her down.]

[Cleo is actually fairly well-known at the shelter. She stops by to help them often enough, and she'll walk the dogs, or play with and exercise the cats... And usually gives them a few extra treats.

Which means all of the animals from the shelter, who know of her tendency to keep treats on her, keep looking away from their own photoshoots, trying to sneak over and join in Cleo's. She's very apologetic, but after the third time someone's dog runs over to try to check her hands for treats, it's probably worth trying to figure out a way to stop them...]

Whoa! Yuujirou! Down boy!

[Not that Yuujirou ran over exactly, as he's on the older side, but he still has enough strength to drag Tatsuo over. Mostly because Tatsuo would feel terrible trying to hold the golden retriever back.]

Gah, sorry Cleo.

[Tatsuo shakes his head as Yuujiro up and shoves his nose into Cleo's hand.]

See? There's nothing. Now come on, Yuujirou. I thought you were more dignified than this.

[cattack]

[... she can't help but laugh, leaning down to start scritching at the old dog's chin.]

No one's too dignified when food is involved, I suppose.

I'm amazed you got roped into this, too.

I suppose that's true. Yell 'last donut' and there's a mad scramble for the break room.

[he's only partially joking...]

It's for a good cause.

...

And I heard the captain might participate? I can't be the only one who wants to see what she does.

Is that something you do often?

[She laughs.]

Do you really believe she will?

[Derek sees a sprayed down Cleo and can see that she a bit uncomfortable. He takes a couple of steps closer and calls out to her.]

Remember Cleo, it's for charity! THINK OF THE ANIMALS!

[cattack]

That's why I'm here in the first place, yes.

So what animal will you pose with?

[Derek sees a grey tabby walking by his feet and gently picks it up.]

Hey, how about this little... [Derek quickly checks the underside of cat.] lady?

[ It was for charity. That was all Frederick needed to hear before he signed himself up to help out. Curse him and his need to help out anyone and everyone. But it's too late now, Frederick has already committed himself to it and he's not one to back out because he's uncomfortable.

And he is a little uncomfortable. He's fine with the make up necessary and being poked and prodded to pose how they want him to, and the animal companion is honestly adorable.

But still, there's one thing that sticks out to him-- ] Do I honestly need to be shirtless?

[ Frederick is making friends with the corgi he's being asked to pose with. In between takes, he's quick to slip a jacket on to at least keep some sense of modesty, and he'll just find a place to sit and play with the corgi.

Right now, Frederick is holding one end of a rope and is playing a mini-game of tug of war with the corgi, who's pretty into it. ]

Energetic, aren't you?

[That's right. It's for charity.]

Come on, Baudin. We all know you're ripped under there. We'll sell at least 25% more if you do.

[Tatsuo was walking by, on his way back from having his make-up done, when he happened to overhear Frederick's question to the photographer. His own shirt is already off, as he's up next with one of the other photographers, but while that photographer is snapping away at one of the other participants, Tatsuo is free to roam.]

I'm hardly the only muscular member of the police force.

[ You could say he's pouting somewhat, but he's not denying the fact that he is, in fact, ripped. ]

Oh, of course not, but think of the animals. The more money we raise, the better.

[Fred likes animals, right? He's in the mounted unit after all...]

[Derek chuckles as he sees the little corgi pulling at the rope.]

Come on boy, get that rope away from Baudin!

[Derek reaches down and scratches the dead of the corgie who continues to pull at the rope.]

[ the corgi pauses his tug of war and flops over onto his side. 'please pet me more' he seems to be saying ]

He's quite the fighter.

[Derek continues to rub the corgi.]

Yeah, until you pet him.

[Derek looks at the corgi.]

I bet you are loving all of this attention aren't you?

[Derek looks back up at Fred.]

How have you been doing Fred?

i. Cat complications

Derek brought his own cat, Blaise to the shoot. The shelter the funds are going to is the exact same shelter he got Blaise from a year ago. However, Blaise seems to not have the holiday cheer nor his he being cooperative, he would much rather explore around the studio.

"Damn it Blaise!"

Derek gets up from the wingback armchair he had been posing in and quickly grabs Blaise and holds him up at eye level.

"Do you mind? Can't you behave for like twenty minutes in public?"

Blaise is hanging limp in Derek's hands and is staring at him. In response, he loudly meows.

Derek stares at his cat.

"It is a bloody miracle you were adopted."

Derek walks back over to the chair and places Blaise on his lap.

"And don't even think about scratching this chair. I don't have the money to replace it."

ib. As Wet as a Dog

Derek is drenched, but he doesn't mind, the english schnauzer is behaving beautifully and seems to be enjoying the attention. Derek leans down and scratches him behind the ears.

"So how should I pose with you little guy? You're much more well behave than my cat."

iii. What is this?

Derek is walking around the studio when he notices a small travel cage with a hamster wheel in it. Derek's eyes light up a bit. Could it be?

Derek walks over and looks in. Yup, it was a hamster. Derek has a soft spot for hamsters, he had one when he was a kid, which happened to be a great escape artist.

"Well, aren't you cute?"

Derek looks around and then proceeds to open the cage and carefully picks up the hamster.

i. lights, camera, action?

In Tatsuo's opinion, he's got the best animal. Yuujirou is a chill dog who just wants to eat ice cream and have his belly rubbed. Of course, the aged golden retriever keeps alternating between rolling over on the park bench and trying to lick the ice cream right off the cone.

"Whoa, whoa, slow down. You can take your time."


iii. who's a good boy?

At some point, Tatsuo is just going to be playing with the golden retriever he's taking photos with. Sitting on the ground, fluffing the dog's ears and letting Yuujirou lick his face. Still shirtless, which he doesn't seem particularly bothered by.

"Yeah, that ice cream was good, wasn't it? I can still smell it on your breath."

i. Excuse me?

[ Matt hadn't been sure if participating in the creation of the calendar was such a great idea for someone in his profession but his boss had given him a pat on the back since "It's for charity! Think of the animals! As long as you're a kind person the public will be behind you," and insisted he wouldn't be alone. Thankfully Alexander had turned up as well, putting rest to his concern for the time.

Then discussions begin about fashion and pose choices. Apparently not everyone involved in the conversation thinks to properly explain the plan to Matt, forgetting he can't read their notes. He turns to the closest person available that he's acquainted with to ask for the details. ]

All I caught was that there's a puppy and books involved. No mention of a shirt so apparently they think I'm better off without it?

[ That would be news to basically everyone he knows. He goes to the gym but he has never had actual abs until now. Thanks Retrospec? ]

ii. Animals have their own minds

[ The young mutt one of the assistants had handed over to Matt to hold was a real cuddler, a good choice for the photo shoot, less likely to wiggle out of someone's arms and run off. All is ready to go, lighting, pose, all figured out. Just as the photographer prepares to snap the photos the puppy decides it wants to express itself. It doesn't wiggle out of his arms but it does wiggle in place, tail flopping, paws flailing in excitement, and snout right in Matt's face to deliver an intense session of wet kisses.

He needs a towel or something to wipe off all that puppy drool asap. Does anyone have their hands free to help? ]

[Derek chuckles when he sees the puppy wiggle in Matt's arms and licks his face. He removes the damp towel from around and shoulders and motions to the photographer that he was going to give Matt a hand.]

Here mate, use this.

[Derek bumps Matt's shoulder with the towel. The next sentence Derek speaks in a quiet and low voice.]

Mate, when did you get abs?

Thanks Derek. Hey. Okay. Yes I like you too. Calm down buddy.

[ Matt shifts the excited puppy in this arms so he can grab the towel and he pats his face. ]

Guess this means they'll be piling more makeup on my face. My skin is going a little crazy from all the brushing and the layers of pigment.

Abs? I did notice that my clothes fit a little differently and I could lift more weight at the gym recently. I went to the dojo several times to meet with Dante. Otherwise I assumed any sudden changes were Retrospec's doing. Why? Are my muscles that much easier to see?

[ There's also the part where he has been exercising via fence climbing and running on rooftops. Ninja Warrior was a fun challenge. "Mike" might have won if he hadn't left the obstacle course and run off to stop a crime do who knows what. ]

Mate, you have a SIX PACK! How the bloody hell do you not notice you have a six pack?

[Tatsuo's only been half listening himself, as he's been looking off to the side at the various animals that have been brought.]

Huh? Oh, maybe they're going for the 'everyman' kind of look with you? You don't have as... lean a build as Derek. And you work out some, so it's not like you won't be trim.

[Tatsuo reaches over and gives Matt a joking poke in the bicep.

And then pokes him again.

Then just... outright feels up Matt's upper arm.]

Dude. Have you been hitting the gym extra?

[ Matt turns his head toward where Tatsuo squeezes his arm, puzzled frown on his face. ]

Hm? A little. I've been to the dojo to train with Dante and I can lift more weight on the machines at the gym now. It could be Retrospec.

[ Could also be all that parkour practice. ]

[Tatsuo is giving Matt a more scrutinizing look now. Is he filling out his shirt a little more than before? His arm definitely felt more muscular.]

How much more weight are you lifting?

[a pause]

Look, I'm going to need you to take your shirt off.
