[open] Telekinetic shenanigans
WHO: Ren & YOU
WHERE: Out and about; wherever there's lots of people, the park, a bar or two, and pretty much wherever.
WHEN: Throughout the month
WHAT: Ren levels up in Force powers. He's practicing by squinting at people and throwing things.
WARNINGS: None?
He first discovered it at work.
Ren was minding his business, doing a few adjustments on an engine when he tried to grab a tool just out of reach. After a couple of unsuccessful attempts while keeping his eye on the things he intended to fix, the tool flew into his hand from several inches away, and he stopped dead. He could hardly believe it. He glanced around to see if anyone had seen, but no one had been watching.
He experimented briefly to see if it was a fluke, and after a couple of small parts were also magnetized to him with just a bit of thought and effort, his heart was racing with excitement.
Ren kept his head down and finished his work quickly that day.
[A - 1st to 15th - Around Town]
Although the new sense he gained last month ended up coming in handy in a way, when he was first adjusting to it, he'd thought it was something like a miserable, constant migraine. But by now, he's realized the strange layer of... something over the world isn't an aura in the medical sense, but more of an actual aura. Like a magical whatever. It doesn't seem to match up with the sci-fi feeling of what he's seen of his past memories, but it's the best explanation he's got, especially with his more recent discovery.
While occasionally it can get to be overwhelming, he's still trying to figure it out. It seems to get the most intense around people—so he's people watching. And squinting.
There are differences between people, he can tell that much by now, but it can be hard to point out anything specific about the feeling to the point that it's frustrating. Still, he's going to at least try to get a better hold of whatever this is, and he's sure it requires continuous practice. Retrospec users in particular will get his attention, especially those who may be undead, robotic, divine, or otherwise have an unusual life energy.
Unfortunately, his face makes it look like he's scowling in a particularly suspicious way, like he's just waiting for the right moment to walk up and do... something. Don't mind him if he follows behind you for a bit...
[B - 10th to 18th - Park]
When he's not doing that, he's practicing with the telekinesis. As impatient as he tends to be, he knows he has to start small, so he's sitting in the park, levitating a few pebbles above his outstretched hand, occasionally tossing them this way and pulling them that way. He's still practicing, though, so sometimes they shoot off in directions he doesn't mean, including right at other passersby.
He's had more than a month to decipher a little bit about his sixth sense now, and his interactions with people have brought him enough experience to associate a duller feeling with "normal" people, and anything else as "abnormal." It's not specific, but it is a start—and he's almost certain "abnormal" always means, at least, a fellow Retrospec user. To that end, if anyone off the app approaches him in astonishment (or annoyance then astonishment), he simply brushes them off by saying it's a magic trick. For those who approach who are more aware, however—they get a far more blunt response.
"What."
He's just an innocent man, flinging a few rocks around with his brain.
[C - 19th onward - Bars]
As he gets a little more adept with his new pseudo-magic ability, he ventures to try with something a little more challenging. He can be found at a few bars around town several nights in the later part of the month, but only in places that happen to have darts.
He doesn't seem as interested in drinking as he is in the darts, though there's usually a beer sitting next to him. He'll be frowning in concentration as he throws the things at the board, following through with the motion perhaps a bit more than necessary. Well... he's not really hitting the bullseye that often, but perhaps some bargoers may notice he's getting adept at avoiding the outer rings. At least he's not being so obvious about it this time and isn't pulling the darts out with anything less visible than his actual hand.
On the 19th, however, he can be found looking a little more melancholy, whereas the rest of the month he seems almost energetic. That's also the only day he'll be seen drinking something significantly more expensive than a beer.
[D - Wildcard! All month]
That isn't all he's going to do, though. Basically wherever there are objects light enough to be carried by one hand, they are going to be floating for a few seconds. Coffee cup sitting in front of him? Done. The tools he's using to fix your car? Zipping into his hand. Books in the library? He doesn't usually need a ladder anyway, but now he especially doesn't. How well this is accomplished will depend on how much time he's had to practice, but he is going to be staring and occasionally using hand gestures as subtly as he can to do this. Feel free to spot this weirdo who only has half of a damn left about not standing out and ask him about his space magic powers. Oh, was that golden egg yours? Not anymore. Finders keepers.
He also may take a few moments to scowl at the shifting of buildings, stare at the newly-blue sky, or occasionally shove a turkey out of his way with a foot. You know. The usual.

B 15th
Mohammed stuffed his gloved hands into the pockets of his thick jacket as he stood behind Ren. He too had gone out to a street of closed down shops to practice summoning Magician's Red when he first saw it appear. Practicing someplace that didn't have many visitors made perfect sense.
"Can you only move rocks?"
no subject
"That would be irritating," he replies, "so thankfully, no."
His concentration is broken for a moment, however, so a couple of the rocks drop several inches before Ren regains his focus. ... this is harder than it should be, says the impatient part of him, even though it's kind of a miracle he can even do this much. It's not like he expected telekinetic powers to ever be real.
"In my memories, I could even move other people. I'm not sure what the limits might be."
no subject
"Like manipulating other people to do things physically, or moving them around roughly?" It sounded like an easily abused power, though fire could be more dangerous when put in the wrong hands. The two of them were reasonably responsible adults that can be trusted with such abilities.
no subject
"Roughly, with the one I remember. Though it was sort of precise... I could probably make someone shuffle around, at least."
Anything more involved than shoving their legs a particular way, he's not so sure.
"I'm not doing anything like that any time soon, though." Sadly. It would be nice to have the ability to fling people around at will. Ren twitches his fingers in a particular way to spin the rocks in the air, as if they're on some kind of invisible merry-go-round. He has a ways to go, but he's determined to practice and experiment.
no subject
"How far can you throw them?" He turns his head downwards at the pile of pebbles.
no subject
He huffs and sets his hand against his knee.
"Just short of what I can with my arm. For now." Despite his disappointment, he sounds confident in his prediction.
no subject
But this time, there were no wires or hidden mechanisms in the rock.
"This is one of the most useful powers I've seen." As much as he didn't want to come off as easily impressed, he can't hide the amazement as he watches the display from beside Ren. "Maybe not with rocks, but any small object should count, right?"
no subject
"They should," he agrees. "I pulled a wrench into my hand the first time it happened."
If he can grab a wrench, and if his past self could grab a person... the possibilities could be anything, right? It's a prospect he's probably a little too excited about, himself. How can he mock Mohammed for being impressed when he's still reeling at the thought of what he might be able to do, himself?
"I've been thinking about getting a few knives, once I practice enough."
no subject
He didn't find it worth the time to worry about it yet.
no subject
"I said 'once I practice enough.' I'm not so stupid that I'd want to have sharp objects hovering around me I couldn't control."
He can be pretty stupid, but he has enough forethought to consider the consequences of something as real and dangerous as several knives that could easily drop and stab him. Especially since his level of ability isn't nearly where he wants it yet.
"It would be for emergencies. Whatever Retrospec throws at us."
B! i've been waiting for an opportunity to thread more with ren ;-;
It doesn't take long for his attention to zone in on an individual doing... something quite peculiar. He snaps a couple of shots of the guy seemingly just playing with pebbles, and while his photographs don't get to capture it, Prompto feels bewildered when he sees proper that the guy is not actually picking out the pebbles. He's only holding them up.
"Hi," is what he says at the accusatory question-that-isn't-a-question. "Are those powers you got back?"
:D well here it is!
"Recently. I'm having to start small, unfortunately."
Thus the pebbles, he indicates with the hand that's already palm-up. With the flick of a finger, he tries to fling one of the floating rocks at Prompto's camera, but it misses by several inches even if the guy doesn't try to get it out of the way. A displeased noise leaves Ren's throat.
no subject
"It still seems really cool what you can do. I haven't gotten any kind of magical powers myself."
Kicking at the ground a bit, he offers a smile, then a hand to shake.
"Name's Prompto."
no subject
"Ren."
It takes him a moment to focus enough to leave the pebbles hovering without his hand held up as if he's physically keeping them there, but he does eventually reach out to shake the offered hand. Ren has found that telekinesis is remarkably more easy with hand gestures, but he wants to test how he can do without them, and practice makes perfect, or so he's told. It's a good opportunity.
"Perhaps you'll get something in the future. Powers don't seem uncommon."
no subject
Ren seems obtusely quiet, but it's not difficult to make conversation with him. It's almost bizarre to shake the hand that managed to make pebbles hover with an ounce of ease.
"Is that all you can do so far?"
no subject
People, for instance. The more he thinks about that one memory, the worse he feels about the messenger who faced past-Ren's wrath, though... honestly, he wonders how badly he should feel, given the principles of the military they were apparently both a part of.
Eh, he'll just appreciate the fact that he can look forward to more powers.
"Weapons can be just as useful if you know how to use them, I suppose."
no subject
"On that same note, guess we're all learning something freaky about our past selves with every passing day."
Nothing to do but to empathize.
With a smile, Prompto puts his camera behind himself and starts picking up at pebbles from the ground.
"Have you met anyone from your memories yet?"
no subject
"Freaky. That's one way to put it." He has a lot of words for whoever he used to be, and none of them pleasant. Well, except "powerful," which is the only thing he appreciates about the situation.
A slow breath leaves him after Prompto's question, however, and there's something hesitant in the way he moves his gaze off into the distance.
"I did once. It was because of him that I had my first... 'flashback' of sorts. But he left the network not long after that."
A
Either way, he doesn't seem to have noticed Ren immediately, as he follows along on his beat, getting used to his schedule again after an administrative leave. (Long story.) But he isn't tense or worried. If anything, he's happy. But still weird.
no subject
He's puzzling over the sensation, trying to focus through the static of the rest of the world, to the point that he's genuinely scowling with the effort. Unfortunately, he's still working on it, and now that he's trying to actively use his new sense rather than try to block it out, a sharp pain hits him behind the eyes. It's still too much information for him to handle very well.
Togusa may hear him grit out a pained noise and mumble a curse before he leans a hand against a nearby wall and covers his eyes with the other.
