[ it's tatsuo's birthday!! majima cares a lot for his almost older brother, so he decides to host a party for him at the club. it's during the day partly because he does have to run a business at night, but also so people can get the fuck home before the fog gets them. he sends out invites to everyone he knows who is tatsuos friends and tells them to get tatsuos other friends involved and then comes up with some excuse to get him down to the club -- look, if he had to have a surprise birthday so does tatsuo, i dont make the rules.

there's drinks and food and cake and the class of club sunshine. he's got music playing and dressed the club up with balloons and party hats (majima's wearing two at the start of the party but ends up with several by the end) as well as other cliche party games and objects. he wants everyone to have fun and celebrate tatsuo!! theres also a table for gifts, of course, and majima bought tatsuo some really nice new sneakers to help his collection back up. look, it's an important thing for him!!

A. Surprise

[It's not like Majima had to come up with a complicated excuse to get him down to the club, though trying to throw him off the scent of a party was probably the hard part. It was his birthday. But for all he's pretty enthusiastic about celebrating his friends' birthdays, he tends to be low key with his own. So he was expecting to maybe just to hang out with Majima and Kiryu for a few drinks, not a full blown party.

In hindsight, he really should have expected this. Not that he's not pleased, if the grin on his face is anything to go by.]

Awwwww, you guys are the best.

B. Cake

[Look, he didn't have that many birthday cakes growing up. When it was just him and his mom, she couldn't afford much, and those fancy cupcake bakeries were not in vogue yet. Instead, he'd get a birthday ice cream cone. And after, when he was in the orphanage, well, they'd be lucky if there was a cake for the October kids on a whole. Forget individual birthdays.

So yeah, Tatsuo is a little choked up at this cake with thirty-one individual candles on it. Not because of the candles, but because it says 'Happy Birthday, Tatsuo.' And yes, he totally makes a wish as he blows out those candles. That he can have a birthday just like this, next year.]

C. Presents

[Once the cake has been cut and eaten, Tatsuo heads over to the table with the presents. Do you wait for him to pick yours up, or do you hand it to him yourself?

Or do you give it to him in person earlier?]

D. Mingling

[It's a party! This is a good time to just hang out and talk to people! Eat some food, have some drinks! And come talk to the birthday boy.

[ he can tell the way its getting to tatsuo, but majima's usual way of dealing with feelings is trying to march right on past them. talk about something else. not point out the way people are getting teary eyed and let them have their space, unless they really wanna talk. of course he'll always listen when people want that. ]

[Derek notices Tatsuo head over to the table with the gifts on them. Derek smirks because he knows Tatsuo will love his gift. Derek casually walks over and taps his gift with a finger and speaks in a low voice that only Tatsuo can hear.]

I'd say you'll want to open this one first. Since, you know, it's going to be the best of out of them all.

[Tatsuo raises an eyebrow. Really now. He picks up Derek's present anyway and gives it a gentle shake. Oh... he knows that sound and the shape of the box is right. Putting it back down on the table, Tatsuo quickly unwraps the paper.

His eyes light up when he sees the Adidas logo, and when he pulls the lid off the box he can't help but let out a small 'yesssssss' when he sees what's inside.]

Superstars! Derek, thank you!

Togusa's present looked like almost a cube, because it turned out to be a stack of CDs as tall as it was wide. All of them have Japanese labels on them, that Tatsuo can read now, mostly from the late 80's through the 90's into the early 00's.

"That should give you a sampling of all the stuff you missed out on growing up here," Togusa smiles.

Tatsuo immediately starts shuffling through the CD cases, looking at the names of the various bands. He's started poking around on YouTube, but it's one thing to jump into a genre of music and another thing to jump into a whole language worth of music. So Togusa's suggestions are highly appreciated.

"Wow, thanks! I wasn't really sure where to start."

He grins widely. "I was picking up so much American culture, after I got here, it's fun to do this the other way around. Happy Birthday, man."

-May approached Tatsuo, clearly holding a relatively small gift box that may or may not have been obtained through honorable means, extending it towards him, though not before drawing it back slightly and raising her other hand, finger out, pointing at his nose.-

Listen, before I give you this, I don't wanna hear word one, not word ONE, about how I shouldn't be spendin' what little money I have on a gift for you while I'm in the situation I'm in, okay? You're gonna take this, you're gonna like it, and we're gonna eat some heckin' cake, and we're both gonna have a good time and then *tomorrow* I can go back to worryin' about money, okay?

[The moment May points at him, Tatsuo knows what she's going to say, and he can't help but smile a little. Because it is such a May thing to say. And in the end, he nods in agreement.]

[ Here comes a box neatly wrapped up by the professional hands of a store associate as most gifts from Matt tend to be. He'll skip the half joke half serious mention that if it's not what he intended to buy or in the wrong color they will forget this ever happened and make sure it's exchanged for the correct item. Tatsuo has heard the joke way too many times by now. ]

I came very close to getting you something else but I couldn't resist going with this for the sake of nostalgia.

[ And perhaps a laugh. Tatsuo can likely recognize the size and shape of a shoe box in his sleep. Sure enough when the wrapping comes off there are a pair of sneakers to be found inside but the label on these mention "lighting up." ]

[Peter dressed up so much, he practically could be a host. But that didn't stop him from acclimatizing to all the party stuff Majima set out, so now there's a pointy party hat on his head with his suit setup.

He accepted some of the booze, and having made his seat had attracted some employees to chat. But it's clear that Peter never visited a club like this on his own, because the women are engaged like pigeons on the park bench.

From his roost and flock, he waves.]

[Tatsuo isn't what you'd call a regular at the club, but he does drop by every week or two. So he recognizes the way the ladies are eyeing Peter, and slides up in an attempt to spare the officer's wallet.]

They smell fresh meat, you know. You're lucky they're not on the clock right now or they'd be draining your bank account. I think they want you to stick around until opening.

[The warning is administered with a smile.]

Hmm, they'll be disappointed then. I just wanted to talk about the last release of poetry periodicals.

[If one is halfway dreaming it almost sounds like Officer Hoboken just said something with a grin. But if you checked if a smile is there, Peter's already moved on, with a small, subtly angled smile for something else.]

[Poetry periodicals? Was that a joke? Tatsuo hasn't completely figured out Peter's sense of humor, so he's not quite sure if the younger man is teasing him or not.]

[ Matt has been standing since he arrived so he's relieved to get pointed in the direction of a chair. He doesn't usually go to places like these, satisfied to stay up late researching cases rather than sit and chat with random women getting paid to act interested in what their visitors say. Voices and words make up so much of what Matt does or does not find attractive- why would he want to waste time one something staged? He keeps that thought to himself of course. Everyone has to make a living somehow. Just leave him off the client list please.

He sits, drink in one hand, cane in the other. Across from him he can hear the ladies surrounding Peter talking with each other and for the moment he zones out, unaware that one of Tatsuo's friends is among the people nearby. ]

[After enjoying the success of giving Tatsuo the best present ever, Derek makes his way over to the table with cake. Picking up a plate and fork he eyes the drinks, but decides against it, remembering the outcome of the last birthday part he went to, his own. Yeah, let not have a repeat of that.

Derek places himself against a wall and starts doing his normal people observing. He doesn't know a lot of people here so feel free to talk to him.]

[ Matt is a bit of a wallflower during the party, spending plenty of time simply standing somewhere off to the side and listening to the others talk or sitting and doing more of the same. He occasionally adds a thought to an ongoing conversation where he feels it's fitting, otherwise he keeps himself occupied with food and drink, and he seems amused by the party favors.

If someone takes a moment aside to talk to him directly they might get more words out of him. ]
