september mini-event log

MINI-EVENT
All's Well That Ends Well
Summer's officially drawing to a close in the city of Recollé. Students and faculty alike begin to prepare for classes to resume. Vacations come to a close and stories are shared among co-workers. The amount of beachgoers lessens which each day and the nights start to become a little cooler as the leaves slowly change color. Unreality is kept at bay for now. But that doesn't mean the city's entirely back to normal...

I.
It's a beautiful day and many citizens in the city are embracing their last days of freedom. With a long weekend ahead of them, several people pack up and head back down to the beach to welcome the ocean home and partake in the annual End of Summer party. Much like July's celebration, Peach Beach is the place to be for food, fun and sun. The food trucks are back (and seriously, is this the only action they get?) and the stage is set up for musical and theatrical performances. Soak up some rays and spend the day with your friends, and don't forget to take advantage of the end of summer deals on the boardwalk.

However, the party doesn't get too far before there's the sound of a something soaring through the air. One by one, beachgoers will notice several boats falling straight from the sky and down into the ocean creating huge waves that crash against the shore. Tour boats, sailboats, and even a houseboat will plummet down into the water, miraculously avoiding crushing any swimmers. Make way, everyone: the boats are back and they're making a splash.

II.

Perhaps you're new to the Retrospec network and you've spent the last couple of days trying to remove the persistent app. Or perhaps you've been a part of this group for a while and you're currently filled with dread bracing yourself for whatever will inevitably come this month. It's not a bad assumption to make and though it may seem as though all things are normal for once, it all starts with an innocent text message.

From an unknown number, all users will receive a picture message along with a smiley face. Though there's no name or message attached to it, several users may know exactly where this came from.

Try as you might, replying to the text message won't work. No matter how many messages you send, the last half of these messages are unknowingly sent out to various Retrospec users. Likewise, you may receive other out of context messages from other users experiencing the same weird effects. Well that's inconvenient, isn't it?

III.
You know, texting can be considered overrated. Why text when you can settle for good old-fashioned face to face communication? With several new faces in the city and the autumn season beginning to settle in, there are plenty of places to go and people to see to unplug for a while. Now that all of the monsters are gone things seem to run smoothly as you go about your daily business. While there's some debris left around the city, the buildings are all in one piece and NPCs seem to be as oblivious as always.

It may be unnoticeable at first. After all, how many people look above their own head? Not many. At any given moment unprompted and unannounced, a gray wispy cloud appears overhead displaying any thoughts you may not wish to share with the public. While the thought bubble won't remain at all times, it will pop up on and off throughout the month of September changing messages and even changing color when speaking to someone face to face. Think your professor's talking too much? Want to ask out that cute barista? Good thing they can read all about it!

IV.
Even with the embarrassing texts and thoughts, this appears relatively tame by Recollé standards. Maybe the effects of unreality really did mess things up and the team's too focused on fixing it. Or, perhaps, this month's twist is a small one in comparison to the temporal storm of August.

On the other hand, it wouldn't be Recollé if things weren't a little more physical, now would it? Settling back into everyday life, users will find that things seem more vibrant now. Sights are brighter, smells are more savory, and sound is sharper than ever. Sound has become so loud, in fact, it's almost as if the sound waves have taken on a life of their own. No matter where you go or what you do, sound will make itself present in new and interesting ways. Musical notes will float out of your mouth as you sing along to your favorite song. Glaringly red jagged lines wind themselves around the feet of someone being yelled at. Storm clouds follow and drench someone who's crying. Hearts rise up in the air like bubbles and pop into small showers of confetti with every expression of love. Sound is fluid and expression is free; there seems to be zero limits to what shape the noise will take.

What are you doing today, Retrospecters? You may find yourself dealing with one, two, or all three of these strange phenomenons.

BONUS.
Over in Tisse, the Retrospec building is as sturdy as ever. Several of you know by now that there is more to this building than meets the eye, but even with the map in-hand it's impossible to navigate anywhere the building does not wish for you to explore.

Today, the doors to Retrospec are open to anyone interested in visiting. The lobby appears to be empty as usual and the receptionist desk in the center of the lobby is completely abandoned. Surrounding the desk, however, are several items. In fact, these are all items Retrospec users bought from Jim Halloway's wedding registry during July's bingo game. Several of these items are useful, such as his and her towels or silverware,
but other items seem outlandish or useless such as meme t-shirts, rubber ducks, and other assorted odds and ends. A stack of thank you cards sit on the receptionist's desk but it appears they have not been started yet.

Although none of the rooms are available for entry, underneath the television mounted on the wall sits a DVD clearly labeled "for educational purposes only." Should anyone put on the DVD, they will find a variety of clips from events from the last several months. Strangely there does not appear to be anything from the nine groups that were split between reality and unreality. It's a nice review of the year so far, isn't it? Perhaps it's time to explain to some new users just what this world is truly capable of.

Welcome to [community profile] recolle's September mini-event! The prompts are simply loose guidelines for you guys to play with and make up your own fun adventures for the entire month of September! While prompt I is only for the long holiday weekend, the rest of the prompts and the bonus can take place over the course of the month. You may also create your own logs or inbox threads based on these effects. All effects will cease on 10/1 at 9pm EST. Any questions you have regarding this event may be directed to the mod comment here.

I'll have to check my contract, but I think I'm eligible.

It's still kind of upsetting. I liked this model.

Oh, um, no, sorry.

I mean, no, I don't really have a question. Or any activities. They cancelled soccer, so no. Um.

[He's still not even sure why he stopped, really. Maybe he just didn't want his poor teacher to get in trouble for sleeping. Maybe slightly hypocritical, seeing as he sleeps in class sometimes, but still...]

Oh. Um, that's too bad.

[Wait, did Shiori pre-order a book? Silently, Sora wonders where he gets the money for all those books. And wonders where he puts them all.]

I, um, hope it comes out soon, then.

[Why is this so awkward. It shouldn't be this awkward.]
brokenlight: ((071) Someone will come running)

[personal profile] brokenlight 2017-09-30 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Were you okay during it?

[A lot of people seemed to have gone through so issues, so he's a bit...concerned.]

Dude, thanks man! That's exactly what I'm aiming for. Would you, like, marry me?

[Sasuke woofs up orange bubbles and starts to trot off to a more open area to play.]

I'm Arion. I think I got a pretty good idea on the Retrospec stuff. Everyone's been pretty nice and helpful.

[There's a lot he doesn't know, but he doesn't know that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯]

[You know what I just realized that could feasibly qualify as a dad joke up there and I'm simultaneously upset I didn't realize this and delighted that Aizawa's natural dad qualities are apparently already applying themselves in these very trying ways.....

But look somebody had to say it, he might as well have, HE COULDN'T RESIST...Aizawa why do you always make your students suffer like this (because it builds character obviously. Or something.)]

[But after he returns her utterly exasperated expression--and thought bubble, in its all-caps glory--with a blandly expectant one of his own (the kind that knows exactly what he just said and has absolutely no regrets about it), it's shifting to a more...approving one? At Chiyo's new and improved request. (Or maybe it's amusement, who knows at this point, but either way...)]

Hm, not bad. I give it an eight out of ten. [what even counts as a ten out of ten aizawa] And that's passing, so congratulations, you get to have my help after all.

Would you like to start now, or is this particular visit more a matter of you testing the waters right now?

That's good, then. I'm not due to be in the classroom until eight, necessarily, so this is a pretty inoffensive detour. They do say a change in routine's good for you every now and then, at least...

[Let's assume it's like 7am right now or something I guess?? Since they're both insane insomniacs like this apparently, even if it's a more natural state of being for Aizawa...

...than it is for Rosalind, apparently? Her newest thought bubble earns a curious glance as they step out onto the sidewalk, at any rate. Before he can quite stop himself:]

Cats have a habit of that more of then than not. Which is likely why they nap around so much during the day, presumably...your cat's only started doing that recently, though?
originallutece: no you're definitely a prophet from god (anger; oh w o w)

[personal profile] originallutece 2017-09-30 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
He's new.

[She says it with a touch of . . . something in her voice. Not quite resentment, not quite anger, but something a little irritable, perhaps. It's most definitely 7 AM and she most definitely has been up for three hours and coffee can only do so much.]

He was gifted to me by a friend's nephew. We're learning to live with each other.

[Well, those aren't exactly the tones of an overjoyed cat owner that's just received everything they've ever wanted in the form of said cat, but...she did say it was waking her up at 4am too. (Or well, thought, not said, same difference at this point--) Most people aren't typically awake at 4am, probably...]

Sounds a bit like a gift you weren't quite expecting. [If "learning to live with each other" is anything to go by, huh...] Is it your first cat? Do you know what breed it is?

[If he sounds maybe a bit more interested in this than strictly necessary then it's because yes, maybe he is, just a little. But who wouldn't be, when it's cats??

Running into a lot of people recently gaining cats lately...this is a good trend. Probably the best trend to happen around here in the last couple months.]

[Oh, god. He's obsessed with them too. He and Ardyn and Souji and god, she's surrounded by them. It's not that she hates cats, but good god, she doesn't understand the obsession.]

My first pet at all, frankly. And yes, he's a Sphynx. One of those bald ones.

[. . .]

He's very bossy.

[At least we have that in common.]
dryeye: icon @ <user name=dryeye> (I guess daylight savings isn't a holiday)

[personal profile] dryeye 2017-09-30 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
[Wow it's hardly an obsession!! Cats are just nice...to have around...a lot.....to the point that Aizawa sure does own one and also still wouldn't mind going to a cafe specifically to experience more of them sometimes, yes, but. That's perfectly normal and reasonable, obviously. It only makes sense, when it's something as nice as cats?

Rosalind's answer gets slightly arching eyebrows, though.]

A Sphynx, is that so? I don't think I've ever actually seen one in person before. Those are pretty rare to come by, believe it or not.

[Sounds like your friend's nephew knows his way around cats, at any rate... But the next bit she says, combined with that new thought up there, earn a short laugh.]

The best way to go about dealing with bossiness is by out-bossing them, as far as I can tell. Though they certainly won't give in easily, and will probably make complaints about it the entire time in various ways...
Edited 2017-09-30 05:53 (UTC)
originallutece: AND WHAT A SHIT OPINION IT IS (talk; that's like your opinion man)

[personal profile] originallutece 2017-09-30 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
[It's very odd, having a conversation like this. Every new thought bubble adds an extra layer to the conversation, nothing particularly scandalous or fascinating but undeniably interesting.]

I'll keep that in mind. He's certainly not shy about making his complaints known right now.

[Indeed, now that he's comfortable around Rosalind, he's perfectly pleased to yowl and shout when he doesn't get what he wants. But oh, Rosalind glances over, and thought Aizawa isn't precisely leaping with joy, she can recognize that note in his voice. It's the same note Ardyn gets when he talks about his cats: intense interest, masked by a calm, polite tone.]

. . . do you want to see a picture?

Yet. [-is what Ryousuke chimes in response, apparently happy to keep perpetuating such a ridiculous myth.] He's a high schooler but wasn't entirely unconvinced.

[Especially when Ryousuke abruptly dyed his hair pink the next day.]

If you'd got one of those bubbles over your head, isn't it possible?

[He hasn't been aware of Retrospec for very long, but he's heard that waking up with bizarre physical changes isn't unheard of.]
blessmefather: (just showing)

[personal profile] blessmefather 2017-09-30 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
As will I. Well then, maybe we'll run into each other on the network or around the city. If you have any need of someone from the district attorney's office feel free to contact me. Until then... [ He smiles. Really, who can predict what wild circumstances they'll fall prey to next? ] Good luck.
blacksong: (genuine or nasty which could it be)

[personal profile] blacksong 2017-09-30 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Technically." [There's a short laugh, but it's not unkind.] Yeah, you definitely seem like a youngest sibling.

[WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN..... But her being the eldest among her sisters means she's biased anyways.]
blacksong: (UTTER CONTEMPT)

[personal profile] blacksong 2017-09-30 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
And no one knows how to fucking get rid of it even after all this time. [sighing] Has there been anything good to come out of all this? Even just one single nice thing?

[She casually shrugs and gives him an apologetic smile, grabbing her coffee once it's ready.]

About as well as anyone can be. I didn't go through nearly as much as some others did, but it's all been a bit... real. You never think of tragedy until it happens.

[Taking a sip.] But the funny thing is... a lot of us have learned how to fight as well. So some of us could handle ourselves.

[Miki follows behind, dashing to catch up and barks up excited bubbles, intending on chasing the older dog.]

Most people are. [Except for a select few, but adversity tends to bring people together.] Just don't really expect things in the morning to be the same as they were at night. Somehow, it's like they're modifying us.

[She shakes her head after a moment, realizing how bleak that sounds.] What I mean is... you just need to be careful.
esperimental: (ummmm)

[personal profile] esperimental 2017-09-30 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
... Well, I did, but I do still need to go buy clothes eventually.

[ The trial continues. Ritsu clears his throat. ]

I've never... really been alone clothes-shopping before.
esperimental: (how to admit)

[personal profile] esperimental 2017-09-30 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are all good. If we're desperate we can just take the clerk's recommendation.

[ Or taking a shortcut... ]

But does she need new shoes?

[ Don't lose your head over gifts Sato! Never mind Ritsu would be the same way if it was someone important to him... ]
matchbreaker: (Lost control of ur life)

[personal profile] matchbreaker 2017-09-30 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[ 'it doesn't matter, I'll still keep getting the headaches either way' ]

Oh, I know. I've actually gotten some of those already, but a woman can be allowed some vanity if she's just out on the town.
matchbreaker: (With a chicken wing...)

[personal profile] matchbreaker 2017-09-30 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
You looked about ready to slide away from me back at that party, and now here you are offering to talk to me or my boy in casual conversation to help us out. We're basically strangers, even if I've got on okay with your Jirou.

[ She shrugs ]

That's more friendly than I expected.
toobigtohandle: (brother)

[personal profile] toobigtohandle 2017-09-30 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
If Jirou trusts you, that is good enough for me.

[That's really all there is to it. Jirou might look like a happy drunk but he is actually an excellent judge of characters and Kenta literally trusts him with his life.]

I'm not ... very good at socializing in big groups.
