september mini-event log

MINI-EVENT
All's Well That Ends Well
Summer's officially drawing to a close in the city of Recollé. Students and faculty alike begin to prepare for classes to resume. Vacations come to a close and stories are shared among co-workers. The amount of beachgoers lessens which each day and the nights start to become a little cooler as the leaves slowly change color. Unreality is kept at bay for now. But that doesn't mean the city's entirely back to normal...

I.
It's a beautiful day and many citizens in the city are embracing their last days of freedom. With a long weekend ahead of them, several people pack up and head back down to the beach to welcome the ocean home and partake in the annual End of Summer party. Much like July's celebration, Peach Beach is the place to be for food, fun and sun. The food trucks are back (and seriously, is this the only action they get?) and the stage is set up for musical and theatrical performances. Soak up some rays and spend the day with your friends, and don't forget to take advantage of the end of summer deals on the boardwalk.

However, the party doesn't get too far before there's the sound of a something soaring through the air. One by one, beachgoers will notice several boats falling straight from the sky and down into the ocean creating huge waves that crash against the shore. Tour boats, sailboats, and even a houseboat will plummet down into the water, miraculously avoiding crushing any swimmers. Make way, everyone: the boats are back and they're making a splash.

II.

Perhaps you're new to the Retrospec network and you've spent the last couple of days trying to remove the persistent app. Or perhaps you've been a part of this group for a while and you're currently filled with dread bracing yourself for whatever will inevitably come this month. It's not a bad assumption to make and though it may seem as though all things are normal for once, it all starts with an innocent text message.

From an unknown number, all users will receive a picture message along with a smiley face. Though there's no name or message attached to it, several users may know exactly where this came from.

Try as you might, replying to the text message won't work. No matter how many messages you send, the last half of these messages are unknowingly sent out to various Retrospec users. Likewise, you may receive other out of context messages from other users experiencing the same weird effects. Well that's inconvenient, isn't it?

III.
You know, texting can be considered overrated. Why text when you can settle for good old-fashioned face to face communication? With several new faces in the city and the autumn season beginning to settle in, there are plenty of places to go and people to see to unplug for a while. Now that all of the monsters are gone things seem to run smoothly as you go about your daily business. While there's some debris left around the city, the buildings are all in one piece and NPCs seem to be as oblivious as always.

It may be unnoticeable at first. After all, how many people look above their own head? Not many. At any given moment unprompted and unannounced, a gray wispy cloud appears overhead displaying any thoughts you may not wish to share with the public. While the thought bubble won't remain at all times, it will pop up on and off throughout the month of September changing messages and even changing color when speaking to someone face to face. Think your professor's talking too much? Want to ask out that cute barista? Good thing they can read all about it!

IV.
Even with the embarrassing texts and thoughts, this appears relatively tame by Recollé standards. Maybe the effects of unreality really did mess things up and the team's too focused on fixing it. Or, perhaps, this month's twist is a small one in comparison to the temporal storm of August.

On the other hand, it wouldn't be Recollé if things weren't a little more physical, now would it? Settling back into everyday life, users will find that things seem more vibrant now. Sights are brighter, smells are more savory, and sound is sharper than ever. Sound has become so loud, in fact, it's almost as if the sound waves have taken on a life of their own. No matter where you go or what you do, sound will make itself present in new and interesting ways. Musical notes will float out of your mouth as you sing along to your favorite song. Glaringly red jagged lines wind themselves around the feet of someone being yelled at. Storm clouds follow and drench someone who's crying. Hearts rise up in the air like bubbles and pop into small showers of confetti with every expression of love. Sound is fluid and expression is free; there seems to be zero limits to what shape the noise will take.

What are you doing today, Retrospecters? You may find yourself dealing with one, two, or all three of these strange phenomenons.

BONUS.
Over in Tisse, the Retrospec building is as sturdy as ever. Several of you know by now that there is more to this building than meets the eye, but even with the map in-hand it's impossible to navigate anywhere the building does not wish for you to explore.

Today, the doors to Retrospec are open to anyone interested in visiting. The lobby appears to be empty as usual and the receptionist desk in the center of the lobby is completely abandoned. Surrounding the desk, however, are several items. In fact, these are all items Retrospec users bought from Jim Halloway's wedding registry during July's bingo game. Several of these items are useful, such as his and her towels or silverware,
but other items seem outlandish or useless such as meme t-shirts, rubber ducks, and other assorted odds and ends. A stack of thank you cards sit on the receptionist's desk but it appears they have not been started yet.

Although none of the rooms are available for entry, underneath the television mounted on the wall sits a DVD clearly labeled "for educational purposes only." Should anyone put on the DVD, they will find a variety of clips from events from the last several months. Strangely there does not appear to be anything from the nine groups that were split between reality and unreality. It's a nice review of the year so far, isn't it? Perhaps it's time to explain to some new users just what this world is truly capable of.

Welcome to [community profile] recolle's September mini-event! The prompts are simply loose guidelines for you guys to play with and make up your own fun adventures for the entire month of September! While prompt I is only for the long holiday weekend, the rest of the prompts and the bonus can take place over the course of the month. You may also create your own logs or inbox threads based on these effects. All effects will cease on 10/1 at 9pm EST. Any questions you have regarding this event may be directed to the mod comment here.

Maybe they got stuck in, uh, one of the places we went to?

[ DUBIOUSLY... ]

[He looks bemused at the cloud that popped up above his cousin's head.]

Are you okay?

[Please don't do that again.]
brokenlight: ((009) Had a voice)

[personal profile] brokenlight 2017-09-06 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
You sure?

[The concern is more evident when he sees her thoughts.

He briefly wonders what could be worrying her so much, but he smiles.]

I'm Hikari, by the way.

Ah...I suppose it depends on the topic? I'm studying medicine...

[ this girl is so energetic. ]

That said, what is the special occasion that means you have this much candy in your skirt?

Aside from the strange sound effects and thought bubbles, that is...ah. There are occasionally thought bubbles floating above people that say what it is they're thinking, currently.

That's true, but why bring it up...it isn't as though either of us has ever had to deal with VCRs.

[...Miles, that is a hell of a shirt.

He's right on the money, though, as far as his assessment of her skills and where they come from; her balance is good and she's clearly not afraid to play around on the ice, but it's also unmistakably playing, and lacking in the fluid poise of proper training.

She's just righting herself from a spin when she sees him making his approach, and so she holds off on doing anything else in favor of cocking her head and smiling at what appears to be a friendly stranger making his way over.]

Hello, there. Looking for something?
evidentiary: (SIGH ► classmates plz)

...I prefer it. I don't like thinking about the alternative of not knowing anything at all.

[ at least this way she's kind of in the loop... ]

However...if they are recording this information, do they do anything with it other than...apparently share it back with us?

[personal profile] falsepretentious 2017-09-06 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well, there's no debating that.]

Don't speak so soon. I once was called to help at a Mcdonalds in another town, which was so behind the times that their orientation videos were still run on VHS. I felt like a caveman handling that rewinder...

[He taps at his glasses as he observes the beginning of the video.]

If anything good could be said of these people, at least they're current.

Well, only smart people practice medicine, so I'm totally right on that one. [Nods in agreement with her own point.]

My parents make me take walks around town because they don't think I get enough exercise, and if I'm being honest, I get tired pretty easily so...I bring candy. To keep my energy levels up! [Nevermind the...inherent contradictions there, Ayano.]

And I'm glad they did, for once! Otherwise I wouldn't have stumbled on this place and all it's titilating mysteries. [And wiggles her fingers like an evil witch for that last bit.]

If I'm gonna be part of this, I'd like to find some way to be helpful. I just don't have a lot of, uh, skills.

[personal profile] falsepretentious 2017-09-06 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Until the payment actually goes through, you are only a potential customer. And at this McDonalds, we don't serve lies!

[He sighs as he reads her latest line of thoughts.]

...Are you truly hungry? Is that much true?
kagepuro: Hey. I made this. (13)

[personal profile] kagepuro 2017-09-06 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ayano continues to pout on the sand--well, only after she's backed up out of the totally wet, grimy parts. Grabbing a tuft of wet her, she squeezes the water out like a towel.]

Y-You're one to talk! I didn't know boats would be falling out of the sky!
cornets: (you're making baking cry...?)

[personal profile] cornets 2017-09-06 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[Congrats Dave, you wanted yelling, and now he is. Jagged red lines start shooting out in every direction as Arion begins to wildly gesticulate.]

AA--Ahh! That was someone I knew when I was three!

Thanks. I'm staying with a host family. The mother owns a restaurant.

[ Yanagi tries to maintain a smile back, but it's slightly off after reading that. Retrospec spares no one, but that gives him some insight... It's not that old, huh. Please don't disrupt his school life. ]

Do you have something to do? I'm just here on a walk before my mom called.
me_matey: (I see the way the salesmen stare into th)

[personal profile] me_matey 2017-09-06 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
So what? Even if it's sudden, you should probably get out of the way.

-SPLOOSH! Another one strikes the water with a heavy wave, smashing into the shore, though once more, the other girl didn't seem to move at all with how the wave had hit.-

[Tatsuo just grins at Matt's faux innocence. He knows Matt knows exactly where he is.]

Can't see why you'd come to this one. It has terrible reviews. Pretty much everyone says that if they could give this place zero stars, they would.

[As he stops next to Matt, he notices the content of the videos playing.]

I see they have the highlight reel going. Oh hey, that's from the time we all shrunk. Two words, it sucked.

kagepuro: Hey. I made this. (13)

[personal profile] kagepuro 2017-09-06 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[Like jumping out of the way of a grenade, Ayano dives further into the sand, this time only getting...marginally wet. She darts her head up towards May.]

Uh? How are you able to just stand there!?
missingache: ([27] We're stressed out)

[personal profile] missingache 2017-09-06 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[He notices the cloud, then tries to swat at it. Which just makes it look like an angrier cloud.]

No! This has been happening all day! First the hearts, now this?

[Make it stop!!!]

Gotcha. ( I wonder if dead mothers miss their children from heaven. I heard mine was nice... )

[ That's interesting at least. Yanagi stares at the nearby racks of magazines. That's what he was here for, since locally, the city fascinates him. He reads that thought though quite easily... Hm. His dad must be prominent or something. ]

Outside of formalities, would you even consider them your parents at that point? That's a long time.
vitis: (gives away plan for umpteenth time)

[personal profile] vitis 2017-09-06 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[ that change in her thoughts surprises him— right. his thoughts can be visible, too. he hates this. ]

I'm the jerk...?

[ the frown that'd plagued him twists into the vestiges of an amused smile. sliding his hands into his pockets, he takes a few steps closer so that they might be within appropriate speaking distance. ]

Shoppin' spree gone wrong?

[ in order to be a jerk some more, apparently. ... okay, he still does feel some sympathy, but. ]

Maybe? [He scratches at his head.] I'm sure that one of us would have noticed if they were hanging around there somewhere during our adventures.

...But, you know, maybe I should stop thinking of the 'how' quickly, because usually the only end stop for that is headachesville!
chaoticwhimsy: (Careful what you wish for.)

[When Lucy comes out of her room one morning, she'll find the apartment has picked up a stray...Lumina is curled up on the couch, under a blanket she'd swiped from somewhere, her shoes on the floor but otherwise still dressed.]

[She's curled up in a tiny, protective ball, but sleeping pretty soundly.]

[She wasn't actually there when anyone went to bed last night though...]
me_matey: (be your Valentino just for you)

[personal profile] me_matey 2017-09-06 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Tch. It's gonna take more than the ocean to move me! -May smirked, crossing her arms over her chest and puffing it out as she looked once more to the heavens, still searching for something.-

I'm not leaving until I get my boat back!

[At first, Lucy didn't notice. She shuffled off to the bathroom to brush her teeth and fix her hair, reemerging to make her way into the kitchen and start making coffee.

The first clue that something wasn't exactly right was the cat. Fang was perched on the back of the couch, fluffy tailtip twitching as if in thought. He was staring down at something intently, and only looked up when he heard Lucy's footsteps. The cat made a loud mrow to get her attention, and then resumed staring. Human, there's something in his spot. Human, fix it.

Lucy stopped, blinking sluggishly at the cat and the couch. When did that blanket get over there?

...why was it so lumpy?

Both Minako's and Freya's doors were closed, the TV wasn't on, hell—the remote was still across the room. They couldn't have fallen asleep watching TV or reading books.

Eyes narrowed, Lucy quietly walked back to the umbrella holder by the front door, picked up one of the baseball bats there, and returned to the living room. She didn't raise it, though. The air around her shimmered, and two vectors curled over her shoulders. They reached all six feet from the doorway to the couch, grabbed onto the blanket—

—and dumped the lump onto the floor.
