We're not bound by whatever contrivances or relations our other selves may have been—they don't matter, really. It would be nice, I suppose, if you became as close with them as you are in your memories of them, but...

You shouldn't let yourself feel too bad over it if things don't work out that way, and take comfort in the relationships you already have or can foster into something far nicer in this life.
