Field Test [Open]

WHO: Togusa and open! One prompt for anyone who would run into him at work.
WHERE: Recolle Police Department and Recolle Woods
WHEN: The 11th and 12th
WHAT: Togusa is getting together what he's learned so far about Retrospec, and then testing just how far this app's reach goes. Also getting to know his new dog.
WARNINGS: None.

[The 11th: Recolle Police Station]

Togusa has to be careful about what he does on versus off the clock about looking into Retrospec. There is no official investigation into the company. Is that going to stop him? Well, no. Wolf and Gabranth both have their own suspicions, as well, and if something does get opened up, Togusa is positive that one of them is going to handle it. But it's best to get as much compiled as possible before that point.

So he has the list: 101 active users that he could count from looking through who was posting and commenting. There's a note that there could be any number of inactive users who are simply sitting back, keeping silent, and not getting noticed. (Along with a post-it stuck on the list "Why can they all remember horses?")

Then come the technical details. The application doesn't seem to need a wireless network connection to appear. The app auto-downloads onto any new device, disappears when you try to show it to someone who doesn't have an account, and can identify the active user without logging in or out. Handing your logged-in phone to another user makes the app switch to their account. (There are some side notes that indicate that Togusa thinks this might actually be the most powerful part of the app, and whatever Retrospec's eventual goal is, it might be related to the user identification part.)

And then the lack of information about Retrospec, itself. Togusa has photos of the inside and outside of the building, but all he could get into was their lobby. After that is a huge list of questions about which direction to go in next. (Money trail? Technology? Business license? Patent on the app? Parent corporation for Retrospec?)

Which leaves Togusa with a lot of questions and no answers, and no support from anyone who isn't directly involved. Pick a direction and start going in it? Or should he just go back on his beat and pretend he doesn't know anything? His hand absently fiddles with a string of beads now attached to his keychain. They're still picking up his emotional fluctuations. Which is more neat than anything else. It's just skin conductivity, right? Still, he's hanging on to them as a kind of evidence, since they have the Recolle logo on them.

Gabranth was right, it has all the hallmarks of dumb viral marketing, so what's the end game?

[The 12th: Recolle Woods (eventually)]

Since there's no limit on what Togusa is allowed to do off the clock, he's heading out for a road trip and a field test. His eventual destination is the Recolle Woods, getting out of the city limits, to where cell service should drop off, and to see if he still has app functionality out there.

But, this trip has a much more mundane purpose, too. Togusa is working on coaxing a white miniature schnauzer into his car. "Come on, Daisuke. You're going to like this."

Daisuke turns up his nose a little as if to tell Togusa that of course he's going to like this, and hops into the car. He jumps up onto the passenger seat and instantly curls up.

"There we go. Good boy." Togusa shuts the door behind him. "Sometimes I wonder which one of us is in charge here..."

Despite having Daisuke with him, this trip might also be a bit more fun with someone else along. Togusa looks down at his phone longingly. Does Koutarou like dogs? He can't imagine that he wouldn't. Hmm.
