Anna... she shouldn't be surprised. Her family did it academically. Oma was never in any danger, not the same danger everyone else was in, and her mom still loved it enough to go back there and let Anna be born there, on German soil. But her warfare experience up until she started remembering A2 has been academic. Nothing firsthand. Nothing ever firsthand.
"I don't remember if I told you this," she says, and she's being honest because losing her eye pushed a lot of stuff out of her mind. "A2 was the last survivor of her mission. The Pearl Harbor Descent," she adds, and the irony isn't lost. "Every member of her squad died, and some of them died protecting her." There's an almost uncharacteristically long pause as she lets that sentence hang in the air.
