Well, you can still be in a simulated world without being data yourself. Like for example, the world could be a 'copy' based on other worlds - primarily versions of Earth in the year 2019 - and we could still be real. Although that might not necessarily be the case here; I'm just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks. Maybe he's telling the truth, but I don't think I'm going to blindly trust someone so easily. Doing something like that is just readying yourself for trouble.
