trivialization: (thinking thoughts)

Wasn't much for Catherine to do but watch. And consider. On the face of it of course it wasn't so bad, and there might not be any deeper meaning to it; with what she knew of the other changes it was hard to see any particular malice in it. If the changes were threatening it was only because the randomness left open the possibility of harmful change as well, not because they suggested any sinister motive.

And yet, still... she couldn't help but chase the wildest guesses. Why grant this boon? Was there supposed to be a need for it, or some point of commonality that assigned it to Chloe? Questions you could only let go in the end, when you were tired of deciding that each guess in turn was as good as any of the others.

"Mm, that is extraordinary..."

She couldn't really judge the power of the jump all that well; more than a high jump but less than a pole vault, with mechanical advantage also lying in-between, so she could only suppose that it was plausibly the performance of a trained athlete... but that sure-footedness would have been impressive even if this was a well-rehearsed routine. As an extemporaneous performance it could only strike her as inhuman...
