Transforming his weapon back is striking him as a bad idea; it takes him a moment to transform it and even though he's practiced with it he's still not nearly as fast as he was in his past life. If he needs to do it in a hurry, he might not be quick enough. He's not sure how willing Wesker will be to kill Birkin - he imagines Wesker will if it becomes necessary, but what Wesker decides is "necessary" might differ from Jaeger's definition.
