So talking to the other members of the town will net the information that the wolves have been terrorizing the town for months since around October and that the townspeople have yet to track down their location or take them out. These creatures are slaughtering their wildlife and livestock and while they've sent hunting parties out most of them have never returned.
They'll suggest some areas that are safer to camp as well and provide the group with some guns, congratulations!
On the other hand, some other members are more chatty than others and will mention that this area used to be more of a skiing area, tourist-y and more full of life than it is now. Very far north there's an abandoned ski slope that people used to utilize, but the wolves have run off anyone who strays that far.
In addition, they will advise on other areas to set traps, and comment that the wolves are louder in the woods especially under the light of a full moon...is there a moon? That's a great question. When you look up it's too hard to tell with all of the bright colors in the sky.
