One of the places that this group will be led toward is a marshy area not too far from the town, an area that the group passed by on their bus. They will find a semi-frozen lake and several pawprints in the snow as they continue their trek. It's about three miles outside of town, so fairly close yet just far enough. They will find that these pawprints seem to lead in several directions including the forest and the mountains, but at the lake they'll find chunks of ice floating in the water. Sitting across from the lake is a black wolf, staring at them from beyond. The lake is too wide to go around and they will have to hop their way across the ice if they want to catch the wolf.

Granted, under the water, there are also these friendly guys who will snap at anyone who's crossing their territory and try to pull them under the water.
