[open] Come, our eyes are still closed

WHAT: Nightmare stuff (open) + fog stuff (closed), a catchall

I. Nightmare [Open]

[ You know how these go. The clock strikes midnight whether you're sleeping or not, and the nightmares of various forms and shapes take their hold on Recolle citizens. This one a poor individual has stumbled into is... surprisingly quaint. The glow of lanterns under the overcast night sky is the source of light in the area, illuminating the steps that follow up to an old temple. Aside from that, the sound the wind (or is it, some sound like voices) and occasional footsteps fill in what would be silence. They're light, that of a child. Now, what are you doing here?
a.) Visitor - Tough luck ending up here, you might want to find sanctuary from the spirits haunting this place. They're mostly animals, and at their mildest a nuisance. Mice and a mousing cat running over your feet, birds swooping and stealing your things... but if you're unlucky, there's a spirit much larger... and howls like a wolf.
b.) Sacrifice - That temple somehow still does its thing, and it happen to be rituals. Ones that need some good old living offerings to some old god for a period of peace or whatever. Hence all the ghosts haunting the place. You don't want to be a ghost too now, do you? The ceremony master is out for you, with a sharp sword to get this done.
Either way, there's a boy in a plain kimono, running about and hiding in spots. He has a tantou tucked into his obi, which actually scares off the little spirits surprisingly well. Congrats on finding a runaway sacrifice. Honestly, Yanagi has been having this dream a few times so by now, he's pretty calm. He's not used to visitors though, so he bolts at most human-shaped things approaching. ]
II. Fog [Closed to CR]

[ Well, you know why you're here. Apparently, Retrospec makes a good impromptu craigslist ad for fog buddies. Yanagi was convinced that the dark blue haori he was given isn't bad luck, and it's comfy enough for an October evening to wear as a coat. He also uses so his designated fog buddy to find him outside of either the school building or his host mom's restaurant in the late afternoon, after his volunteering is done at either. Gotta give the kid credit for not wanting this to disrupt his schedule. Why should he let it, when people offer their help? ]
Yo!
He gives a wave or a bow as a greeting, smiling. The sun is low and the sky and about to sink into the scenery of trees and building. If only it wasn't foreboding of the fog; it would actually be quite pretty. He hops of where he was sitting, holding onto his bag tightly. If you're curious, yes his other regain is in there. ]
Let's get going.

If only it wasn't foreboding of the fog; it would actually be quite pretty. He hops of where he was sitting, holding onto his bag tightly. If you're curious, yes his other regain is in there. ]
Let's get going.

fog;
[ retrospec is a great craigs list. yanagi had told him that this thing was armed so he brought some fancy new regains of his own. i mean, he's not afraid of punching something with a weapon but also he wants to try his new tantou, so. ]
nightmare
The temple is... oddly traditional, and very nostalgic. As someone who has no spiritual sense to her, Sakura looks around mostly unfazed. ]
Hello?
[ She calls out in Japanese, looking to see whether anyone's around. ]
Anyone there?
no subject
Gotcha. I'll get out of the way though, when I need to.
He scans his surroundings. The lights of the buildings in Tisse are getting lost to the fog into blurry glowing shapes. It's almost like a monster in itself, floating in like a giant ghost fading in.
You aren't on your own?
Ah...
[ It's a very deep, smooth voice, and as much as Yanagi refuses to look weak or fearful, he holds onto Majima's arm with a hand. He just speaks out, not knowing where the voice comes from. ]
Nope! It's bad to be alone at night.
no subject
Saku-nee? Um, this place is...
[ And then, there are the sounds of bells being shaken. It's... a cat. A black one. It has those suzu bells tied to its collar, running past them and deeper into the temple. ]
Hey, come back!
[ Out of his hiding spot he goes, after a kitty. ]
fog
Hey, Yanagi! Nice sword.
[ so far, nothing in this area's pinged his spirit radar, but he's subconsciously on the lookout anyway. ]
Ready to go?
no subject
Thanks. Uh, does Retrospec usually include coats with the swords?
[ It's so...
fluffy-looking. Yanagi can't resist poking the hood. ]
Yeah. At least I can't lose you if you're wearing that.
[ When he's done amusing himself, he walks onward. He doesn't have his senses but it looks petty okay right now... Also the guy has heavy footsteps, unlike their's. ]
no subject
[ Sakura says worriedly as she watches him chase after a cat. ]
It's dangerous here - what are you up to? Do you wanna come home with me?
no subject
Actually, this coat is recent — I've had my sword for a while, so... I don't think so?
[ he's free to poke around all he wants!! once they start walking, rindou's spirit sense picks up someone heading their way, and he instinctively holds out an arm in front of yanagi to stop him. but even without spooky spirit senses, it's not easy to miss the sound of heavy, impending footsteps through the fog. he narrows his eyes, slowly unsheathing his blade with one hand. ]
Something's coming. Is it him?
no subject
[ It's very distinctive, especially this late? Also makes Rindou a giant puffy bird now? That's the kind of imagery Yanagi gets with the hood and sleeves.
Ah, he can't finish that though when Rindou holds his arm our so the younger boy stops, holding up the still-sheathed tantou to his chest. Someone's there, he picks up on those steps from his past experiences too. Yanagi nods and is about to say something, before a voice in the voice answers for them. ]
Are you two prepared?
[ It's a very deep voice, and a tall form walks toward them from the fog, taking shape into a very tall man with a spear at his side. If Rindou looks to Yanagi, he can see the young man takes a deep breath with a grave face, now unsheathing his blade. ]
no subject
[ If Sakura turns around, she'll see that the street of Recolle that was once behind her to home has vanished into a dark, unlit forest with only that stone path leading into the shadows. Up ahead, Yanagi takes a misstep and stumbles on the steps up. Nothing serious, but he turns to Sakura, sitting on the stairs. ]
I want to save that cat, it's going to get sacrificed if it has that collar.
[ Plot twist:
Yanagi prefers cats over dogs. He likes them both! But felines and birds are his preferences for pets. ]
no subject
[ still, it's a little too early to tell yanagi that he thinks he's a sword... he redirects his attention to the figure that approaches them in the fog. once they can see him clearly, the man looks to be even taller than rindou, with purple hair, yellow eyes, and a muscular form that puts both of them to shame. but he's never fought against a spear wielder, so in the end, knowing that this person carries a spear is not useful.
when yanagi unsheathes his blade, rindou takes that as a sign of his readiness and lowers his arm, readying his blade. ]
Prepared for what, taking you down? You look like you're in your thirties, old man.
[ which is not old at all but you know, he's only 21. ]
ii!
Kashuu's timely as ever, too, sword at his side as usual. It hasn't really left his side since shortly before unreality kidnapped away half of their population, and it sure as hell isn't going anywhere now. He eyes the bag Yanagi's got, in any case, before nodding once.]
Ready to head out! The fog's been kinda thin in some parts tonight... Maybe it's finally going to go away soon.
[This fool and his foolass wishful thinking.]
no subject
[ A good rule of thumb for Retrospec-affected Recollites is that there's a time and place for these things. Rindou's astonishing similarities with his tachi? Definitely an interesting topic to discuss, but both of them get that they can talk about it later when there's less danger on their hands. Rindou taunting the spearman who had no qualms of attacking what everyone else assumes is a child. Also when fighting a dude wielding a blade on a stick with no prior experience with such? Hm... ]
Rindou, I don't think he's even human for his age to matter.
[ There is a Face here, but more serious: They can't discern such a detail in this current situation, but his pupils are red, and Yanagi managed to catch that once before where it was way too close of a call. ]
Indeed, and it's amusing for you of all people to say that.
[ "Tonbokiri" takes a particular, far step with his foot, and the smaller of the Anti-fog Pair picks up what's about to happen ]
—Get out of his way, he's fast!
What's wrong, unable to approach me?
[ Yanagi sidesteps to not be in the spear's direct path, but the fog-illusion targets Rindou when he charges. ]
no subject
Is it because my hair's white? It's the latest trend! But I look so young otherwise, don't I?
[ he sees the foot move before he hears yanagi's warning, instinctively shifting into a defensive formation — preparing to block what it throws his way. ]
On it!
[ their blades clash; and soon, he discovers that fighting against a spear is nothing like he's fought against before. when rindou aims for his chest, he finds his blow blocked; and there are multiple moments where he narrowly dodges being swiped by the spear's tip, underestimating the range in which it can be swung. what little luck he has will give out soon, especially if the illusion's directing all of his focus on rindou. maybe he could be distracted, somehow? ]
You think you can find an opening?
no subject
I'd appreciate it. People are doing this because they're good people, [ no one wants a kid to be deda when they can do something about it ] but it's... I feel bad?
[ The same that he feels having to deal with his host family helping out in their own way. Why are you all so nice? It's terrible to be a fresh Retrospec kid without regains to help save his ass so no one has to. Now that Kiyomitsu mentions it though, be wants to see where the fog could be thinner. ]
Whatever path that's out of the way might be good, since it's not as open... There's a park near here that we can cut through, the fence is short.
[ Ah, to be a former tantou and fan of sneaking around. But Yanagi points in that direction if where home is, with said park not too far off. ]
no subject
[ he reaches for the hilt of his dope new weapon but doesn't draw it yet. no need to attack first if they can all just. you know, go on their way. ]
no subject
[ Wait what... Is he mistaking Rindou for someone else? White hair isn't quite exactly common, but there's a lot of room to assume somewhere it is? The big guy in front of them has a pretty uusualy hair color, after all. ]
O-on it!
[ Yanagi watches those blades of theirs blades clash, and he does his best to pull his attention away from it to come up with. But, a tantou versus a yari, that doesn't sound like a favorable matchup when Rindou and his tachi are having a time keeping up with the strikes and thrusts of that spear. ]
Guh!
[ It feels a little wrong to get in between a fight, but Yanagi is small, as certain white-haired young men won't let him forget He pulls the tantou from where it stabbed into the yari's leg, only to get smacked away by his arm, hitting the ground a yard or so away. ]
You got a hit in... Are you that committed to your betrayal?
no subject
[ but perhaps asking yanagi to step in wasn't the greatest idea; even if he did manage to get a hit in, well... there he goes. ]
Yanagi! Are you okay?
[ if he wasn't busy fending off the yari, rindou would go to him directly — but all he can manage to do is to give him a quick glance-over. yanagi doesn't appear to be bleeding anywhere, so he trusts that he's probably Not Dead, turning his attention back to the fight at hand. but then, something flashes abruptly in front of his vision: the name of a certain purple-haired teammate, and a time spent together fighting what he knows to be the enemy.
he looks at the yari with an amused sort of expression, twisting the sword in his grip as he strikes forward again. while fog illusions aren't people, he figures they work the same way, in the sense that if you try to slice their heads off, they'll vanish — which is what he tries. ]
You're one to talk about betrayal, you know? What about all of our precious time on Squad Two?
no subject
[ The figure approaches, and it's a tall man, dressed quite nice in formal, traditional getup with some armor ("formal" is a stretch here, they're nice clothes but open at the sides and chest). He actually looks calm, if not a touch annoyed if there's any indication from his furrowed brow. ]
Unfortunately, to live in this time and forget our purpose is betrayal. Is that common here, sir?
[ That is one hell of a spear resting on his shoulder, on that note. Yanagi twitches watching the man flick his wrist and arm so that it points down, it look effortless for him to wield. It is, really. But the young man of the tw shakes his head. ]
I'm sorry, I still don't remember. Beating me up isn't going to fix my memory.
no subject
Nngh, I'll be fine... Nothing's broken!
[ He was lucky to land on some grass, as there would be between street and sidewalk. For now, he'll watch and try for an opening... Or maybe distract him. There's something about wielding a sword, using it to fight that feels familiar. Rindou said the more he uses it, the better the memories of using before come back, right? Still, he doesn't have that bravery yet. In time though.
As for Not!Tonbokiri? He'll shift to be defensive so that his head isn't cut off, aiming the blade of his spear higher. He... won't go for Rindou's head though. Most of his swings are short to fend off a now-more aggressive tachi. ]
Betrayal is forgetting our purpose! What point is there to precious memories when you cannot protect them? Yagen has no recollection of those things. If we are merely enemies, this is easier.
no subject
But you can't save all of them...
[ replies Sakura in a oddly pragmatic way for her. She fixes her kimono, smoothing the fabric over her legs. ]
I don't want you getting into trouble for doing something like this - but then again,w hat harm would it do since we're not even in Recolle anyway...
no subject
Our purpose was fighting the Time Retrograde Army. Do I look like one of those monsters to you, Tonbokiri?
[ ... ]
And who's Yagen?
no subject
Yanagi gets up, takes a deep breath, and approaches fight. Just don't think, because it's too much. Get in there, do something. ]
Our true purpose goes beyond that! Even if you or him shouldn't be my enemy...
You exist as one because this isn't right for anyone... Rindou, duck really low!
[ Yanagi found that crack in the defense. Or rather, his body remembers something he was apparently good at while wielding such a small tantou. It was taking advantage of you environment... even the living ones. Obviously hearing that command with Rindou, Tonbokiri will aim a strike low shortly after, which Rindou could handle well by deflecting him. or if not, he'll receive a rather light injury because there wasn't enough power in the strike to make it a strong, straight thrust. ]
Yage--
[ When Rindou ducks, he's going to feel a quick, but hard step on his back. Yanagi jumps off him to get a clear hit in, straight for Tonbokiri's neck at the jugular. The weird way these nightmares "die" by sort of dissolving into nothing means the poor kid's going to tumble through that. The haori helps, it's thick enough to prevent getting scraped up terribly (Some new spots will be raw and bruised though...) But still, not very enjoyable. He's lying on his back, looking at Ridou. ]
Ngh... I heard it from you, actually. That name.
no subject
[Considering the number of Retrospec users to those off the network is still skewed in favor of the latter, which does make it quite difficult to deal with the city's nonsense at times. He adapted easily to the idea of being part of a "group" of some sort, and to the notion that those within the group would do better individually if they do well together as a whole.
That, and yeah, he super doesn't want to see a kid be deda.]
Mm, over that way? [Glancing in the direction Yanagi is pointing! Don't lead him astray nerd his scouting stats and mobility aren't as good!! But he nods anyway, since the parks have generally been pretty safe.] That's fine, yeah. Let's head out. There's a thin part over that way anyway, so once we get there it should be easier... The parks aren't any problem, either.
[This feels like a famous last words scenario BUT HERE THEY GO.]
no subject
Just one is fine. I don't have the personality for some kind of heroic type, but I love animals. Even ones that are just in a dream.
[ They run on the same kind pathos you feel with even virtual pets in videogames. ]
The temple is very very pretty, so it's kind of fun to explore anyway... IT's just a bit scary this late at night.
no subject
while he's regained some of his speed and strength, his body is still 100% human in terms of its flimsy, noodle durability. so he's just going to... weakly lie there in the dirt, the spot on his back sore from where yanagi stepped on it. but from what he sees, his help isn't needed; once the illusion is stabbed through the neck, it fades away.
but perhaps the best conversations are had like this, laying on the grass at night. after making sure that nothing else pings his spirit radar and that the surrounding area is safe, he looks in yanagi's direction, making a reluctant expression. ]
If you're going to use me as a jumping board, a heads up would be appreciated, you know—
[ hmm. ]
Really? I'm sure I haven't given you any nicknames, though.
[ even if he's playing it off right now, somehow, he can't say that he's surprised... ]
no subject
Roger that!
[ Welcome to the Recolle Ranbu tutorial with the starter uchigatana and starter tantou of Retrospec-niwa! Begin the first Expedition (that might definitely go wrong). The park itself is actually more of a garden than like, an open park for footballs and dog frisbees. In the morning, it would be much prettier, with all of its trees changing color with autumn. As Kiyo stated, the fog is definitely thinner in this part. Even if he doesn't have tantou-level scouting, he has good scouting for an uchigatana! ]
Hey Kiyo-kun, what have you found in the fog? I know we're worried about a guy with a spear, but anything else?
no subject
You might have said "no" to it? ...You can't say you were thinking about what you were doing that time you threw a sword at my back either, you know. Maybe that's our thing for right now.
[ It stops slipper thieves and bara spearmen!
Even when it's a little chilly, the moon's out tonight in the sky above them, and quite pretty with the halo of sorts from the thin veil of fog over it. The bird is their danger detector for right now, but honestly resting is fine. His body isn't yet ready for strenuous activity either. It's not like tantous smacked into the ground that often. ]
It was in a dream I had. There was this discussion with others and a man asked me something like "What about you, Yagen? You were always close by his side, so you must have a grudge." He had your face, your voice...
[ He rolls to his side in Rindou's direction. ]
Yagen means "herb mortar". I keep learning weird names of people from my old life.
[ Honebami, Heshikiri, Shokudaikiri... ]
no subject
[ he doubts a simple 'no' would have stopped yanagi from jumping onto his back anyway, especially in the middle of a fight, where every second counts. with that said, rindou knows that yanagi's claim carries heavy implications with it. it means that he's one of their many comrades that battle against the Time Retrograde Army members, but more importantly, it means that he's a sword spirit. does rindou really want to be the one to break that news to him? not really, only if it comes up in a way that he can't avoid. ]
Did he also have my hair color and my sense of humor? [ joking, he's joking. ] You don't have to answer that. I don't remember having a conversation like that at all, but it was probably me if you say it was me.
[ also, good to know! maybe he'll hit up yanagi when he runs out of basil for his frozen spaghetti. ]
So far... I've only heard the names "Mitsu" and "Kara-bou". The one named Mitsu had dark blue hair and an eyepatch, and he called me "Tsuru-san" in return. Do you remember any other names? It'd be nice if they had appearances to match them with, too.
[ the kara-bou is an elusive loner sword that stays hidden, alas... rindou doesn't know what he looks like. ]
no subject
In any case, he'll keep an eye out as well as he can, which is blessedly easier than he expected in this area. Sure, it's not a huge park which means it's not as well-lit as the huge parks are, but the street lights are enough to illuminate the fog in this area, creating a soft glow effect. Like this, it's actually not too dark around here at all.
Which means SURELY it's bound to just fall to pieces soon!! No one can have good luck here.]
Mm, well... There are the glow-y skeleton looking things that I mentioned. They're pretty easy to see 'cause of the whole, y'know... glowing thing and all. Outside of that, there was a creepy evil cat following my friend around earlier and there were some weird wolf things, too. Oh, and a giant koi fish. We'll definitely see that coming from miles away though, since it was big enough to almost eat two of us.
[Someone's been having some wild times in the fog.]
no subject
Shokudaikiri Mitsutada. The one with the dark hair, eyepatch, and gold eyes. Well, one of them was gold. I saw him with a man a little shorter than him, with light brown hair and purple eyes, and his name was Heshikiri Hasebe.
[ The most important detail though? ]
They both wore fancy tracksuits, even if the decor around us was traditional... Oh, there was another boy I remember, but not his name, dammit.
no subject
[ so he was friendly enough with this mitsutada person to call him by a nickname... the traditional-looking place sounds familiar, too; rindou's remembered nearly everything about the citadel except its actual name. but he's heard the second name before — not through what he's remembered by himself, but being told it by kiyomitsu, who mentioned a certain someone receiving it in the mail.
and that's... really alarming, actually. ]
Heshikiri Hasebe? Hold on, that's the name of the sword that your sister got. Not Kouran, uh... Aki.
