WHAT: nightmare and fog redux.
WARNINGS: yugioh is a thing. there's possibly going to be talk of kind-of character death as well as assorted violent things including mild body horror in this log, i'm so sorry. i'll edit this as and when needed.

FOG - the memories fade;

[ if for some reason you manage to run into kaiba in the fog that has somehow encompassed recolle, you might notice a couple of things:

i. whenever the fog comes a little bit too close for comfort, wrapping around both your limbs, you might notice these purple spots eating at your extremities. the more the spots linger, the more... transparent your hands, your legs, your entire body will be. for the most part, kaiba doesn't seem entirely too bothered by your presence, mostly because he's also trying to find his way out of the fog before he ends up disappearing into the ether, at least until he realises that you're also suffering from the effects just by virtue of being close enough to him.

that said-- ] You have to get out of here. Or far away enough that the fog doesn't come too close. [ it sounds grim, and by now his hands look almost translucent. that's why he doesn't actually grab your hand, merely gestures for you to follow him.

ii. congratulations! you've stumbled upon a boss fight, or kaiba being relentlessly pursued by an eldritch horror abomination of a monster.

the best part?

if it attacks you and the attack hits, it feels absolutely realistic enough. antimatter or dark energy blasts hurt like hell, apparently.

what will you do? ]

NIGHTMARES - among all the noise in the world;

[ buckle up and strap yourselves in because ho boy do his nightmares take on a life of their own. kaiba's not really the kind of person to actually sleep, so if and when he probably ends up sleeping out of sheer necessity to prevent himself from actually landing in the hospital again, his nightmares are going to end up taking a couple of various forms:

i. the setting is an open plain. it's kind of odd, actually, considering that you're currently looking at kaiba, reaching out for a smaller, black haired boy, and just before they both manage to reach each other in an embrace, there's a flash of light, and two stone figures are left.

and it's at this moment where kaiba - the real one, not the one you just saw in the nightmare sequence - lets out a short, bitter laugh. he's a spectator to his own nightmares, in this instance. ]

I still don't know what happened, exactly. [ he sounds. a little broken. watching yourself get turned into stone is a thing, definitely.

ii. congratulations! you are now a lucky spectator of this entire sequence. have fun finding out that little tidbit - that his original existence was just to be exploited as a resource to house someone else's mind.

iii. have fun encountering kaiba's doppelganger, who looks both younger and also more sadistic when the white dragon over him snarls, exposing sharp fangs, and then lunges.

alternatively, have him walk into your nightmares! ]

[Watching people turn into stone sure is a thing, no doubt about that. But frankly what's a little more horrifying about it, at least in Carmen's opinion, is the insidious tragedy of when the two of them were turned to stone — after clearly running for each other, moving to try to reach each other, and then suddenly being stilled and silenced just inches before that sought-after contact was made.

It speaks of a certain particularized cruelty, she thinks, to wait and let someone come so close to a goal before snatching it away from them.

But she's surprised when the real Kaiba turns up beside her; she jumps, slightly, and then turns her attention away from the statues and toward him with open empathy on her features.]

What is this? How much of this do you know about?

[ "lucky". dave doesn't feel lucky, wandering into other people's secrets and nightmares. in fact, he feels the opposite? ]

...What an asshole.

[ but someone has to contribute the truth. ]

[It's her own fault, really; normally Katherine's good about keeping track of the time, but not today. She'd gotten caught up chatting with a couple of her friends, one thing had led to another, and now she's stuck walking back to her car in the dark, wary as she strides through the fog. Normally she wouldn't be one to fear something as easily-explained as this, but it's an unnatural sort of fog, a damp that seems to permeate through everything and dampen the world around.

It isn't until she feels a sort of tingling at her fingertips that she realizes something else is going on, that there seems to be something else hiding in the fog, nibbling away at her somehow. There's a gasp of understanding, but what else is there to do but speed up and hope she can get out of the fog before anything worse happens?

This is when she'll see Seto, and of course she's going to hurry on up to him.]

Seto? What are you doing out here? This fog is dangerous.
