JULY EVENT LOG 2.0

EVENT
CRASH AND BURN
The last day of the ReConvention finds con-goers crowding the convention center for last-minute panels and purchases. The halls fill with attendees bartering for wares, attending autograph sessions and showing off their cosplays. But for a select number of people, time is of the essence.

Those who scanned their QR codes at the Retrospec booth will notice that their countdown clock draws closer to zero. With each second ticking closer and closer to the end, a sense of urgency settles around the crowd.

But, perhaps you’re one of the ones who will carry on as if nothing is happening. Or maybe you didn’t scan your code at all. It doesn’t matter though. There’s nothing stopping the clock from its descent backwards, and as the timer strikes zero a loud, piercing roar echoes off of every wall of the convention center.

I.
Those who were brave enough to scan their received QR codes (and even those who didn't but received one regardless) will find that their mobile devices shock them, a quick electric burst that leaves behind a white-hot sort of pain. When you open your eyes after the initial hit, a floating treasure chest appears. While there may be multiple chests surrounding you, it seems you may only open those with your name on them.

Another beam of light shines upon opening your prizes, orbs skyrocketing through the air as they circle briefly before settling around you. A surge of energy ignites within, and for some lucky few new companions and items have also been rewarded to those who played Jim's game. But…perhaps they aren't the ones you expected. Perhaps they make no sense at all. Why not give them a try?

II.
But seeing how the convention center continues to shake, it might be better to find out what’s up. The source of chaos can be traced back to Seto Kaiba's gaming booth as a projector in the wall releases monster after monster that pour out of the projection and come to life. Though the TV above Kaiba’s booth is shattered, the projector keeps rolling and the monsters appear while destroying the booth itself in their haste to be free. Among the rubble left behind the blue glow of the Retrospec symbol shines brightly from a side-panel of the projector.

For those in the convention center, there is the option to run and hide. With the building shifting due to the onslaught of attacks, piles of drywall, cracks and crevices and more provide for good hiding spots to give you time to make a new plan.

Of course, there's always the fight option. What will it take to bring these beasts down? Maybe it's best to lure them outside instead and away from civilians.

III.
Or perhaps that was a bad idea. Whether citizens manage to wrangle the monsters outside or not the beasts will make their way out on their own, fighting amongst themselves and chasing people through the city's streets. Even those who didn't attend the convention will find that the infestation spreads to every district of the city itself, and their QR-given items and abilities kick in. They aren't going for the kill, but they will follow any moving target including those who aren't on the Retrospec network. Though these citizens may run, hide or need rescuing, if asked they will simply remark that the city's always had a bit of a monster problem.

However, now that the fight's moved outside, it's easier to see the distinct red tint to the monsters' eyes every time they blink. A monster that has to forcibly change direction will flicker for a moment, like an image buffering and loading. Even when a monster unleashes an attack, some fighters may take the full impact while others get away with minor to no damage. In those moments, it's easier to bring them to a halt.

When a monster meets its demise though, something strange happens. The flickering is more rapid and faster, and the creature will dissolve into black blocks and spores that evaporate into thin air. What the hell was that? Now probably isn't the best time to ask questions.

IV.
The fighting rages on but with the sun still hanging in the sky it's impossible to tell what time it is. One of the monsters seems to have knocked out the nearby cell phone tower, too, taking down not only cell phone reception, but the entire Retrospec network as well.

It goes on for what feels like hours with the sun beating down from above. Retrospec users battle monsters and fight to reconnect while the network errors out any time someone tries to send a message about the city under attack. It seems as though a new wave of monsters appear just as the last one dies down.

It's with a sudden jolt that reception on your mobile device returns, but Retrospec appears to be in a maintenance mode where the network is still inaccessible. A quick glance at the date on your phone reveals that instead of the mere hours you thought, nearly five days have passed by and you realize the date is now August 3rd. Upon that realization everyone's devices begin to chime with several notifications and the monsters all seem to pause for one brief moment. Not long after, Retrospec members will also find themselves frozen in place no matter how hard they struggle. The spell on the monsters breaks as they swoop upon these unfortunate few, picking them up in their claws, hands or mouths. A large swirling portal opens not far away and one by one creatures dive straight through the portal with the Retrospec users.

These portals may spit you out anywhere in the city, but several of them send residents to Peach Beach. Strangely, the monsters are nowhere to be found, but way out in the distance appears to be a creature, swallowing up the ocean in a swirl of waves.

You can try to run out to fight it, but the moment your feet touch what used to be the ocean floor a forcefield throws you back to the sand allowing the ocean to slip away right before your eyes. The moment the last drop is drained, that monster disappears, too.

What happens next? To be continued…

And welcome to the wrap-up of the ReConvention! As Prompt IV says, monster attacks will continue through all five days (July 30th, 31st, August 1st, 2nd and 3rd) and the network will not be accessible to anyone in-game from now until August 3rd when a mod-posted Retrospec post goes live! Please feel free to play with the monster attacks as you wish! You can have your characters escape via glitches in the monsters, or you can fight the monsters and and your character can actually take damage for a real battle (though death is not an option at this time.) We leave that up to you!

Please do not post any threads in this log or in your inboxes set for after this log just yet! We will be setting up August's event via this log and for plot purposes we ask that you refrain from doing anything prior to our Retrospec post on 8/3.

Those who are in Group One or Group Two will learn more about their small-focus teams on August 3rd when your logs goes live.

Please direct questions about this log to the mod comment here. Thanks!

Okay. Okay, breathe. Or, more accurately, move and breathe. When they don't get another wave behind those wolves, Togusa looks around. They need to get out of the break point here.

He shakes his head in a little bit of disbelief at what Fynn is saying. "You're right. I know you're right. But it doesn't make any sense. I've gotten nothing else with it. I don't remember this. At least your brother got the memory back first." His mind is rebelling even though he knows this is the only possible explanation. A hand briefly goes to his head.

Focus. Togusa points up one of the hallways. "Or." Shit. There is movement coming up it, and Togusa's hand falls. "Which way, we've got to move."

Fynn goes slightly rigid regarding that small tidbit about his brother. "He got...his memory back?" He glances over at Togusa with some mild concern. "What kind of memories we talking about here." While he does remember Ardyn mentioning some of his newfound abilities, the man never told him a thing about these so called memories. Does that explain the slight rift between them? Those memories. Fynn certainly gained a few memories during the past few months, some of which are a little too uncomfortable for words.

"...shit." Fynn let's out a long sigh. He's worried. A little worried. Now isn't the time to think about it but he wonders just how Ardyn is doing in all this. "Let's head away from the incoming horde! That's always the best idea, right?" He jokes in hopes of masking that fretful look upon his face. He signals for Togusa to follow once he spots a staircase entrance.

"There's a sublevel to this complex, right? One leading to an underground parking lot! We can try to sneak out from there." That's his plan in a nutshell.

Togusa nods slowly. He remembers. "Right. That's- how everybody was bringing the big stuff in. If we can clear that out? Better chance to get people out that way." He follows quickly into the staircase. It's more secure in here. More limited ways they can get attacked from. Togusa takes a quick breath out.

"Not what you think. Ardyn. He had vaugely remembered that magic was a thing, and then, later, boom, healing. Thanks to Prompto for letting that cat out of the bag before he could talk to me first, so I don't know when it kicked in. Nothing else he's let me know about himself."

He glances at Fynn, trying to catch his eye. "I've got nothing. Not even a possibility that this is real. Everything I've seen's been much more grounded. Tanks, microscopic machines. And now, what, I'm moving shit with my mind?" He clears a round of the stairs, trying to listen ahead of them. "And the timing couldn't be more suspicious."

That's exactly why Fynn opted for them to take the staircase down to the parking lot. He doubts too many fiends would make their way down there since most of them are on the main floor with the crowd. If he had more ammo on him, he would've tried to clear out of the monsters himself but he doesn't. Fynn doesn't have the means to help Togusa in this endeavor, not with this peashooter and limited ammunition. He's playing it safe for now.

"Is that right?" Fynn asks once he starts racing down the stairs. "Funny, I also remembered magic being a thing but for some reason..." He pauses briefly as he tries to find the right words here. "The idea of 'magic' doesn't really gives me a good feeling, you understand? It's...weird but it's negative. Like something bad." He can't explain it but the very idea of his brother using magic makes him uneasy, very uneasy.

"Well, let's be honest here---weirder shit has happened other than just 'telekinesis'." He admits once he catches Togusa's gaze. "Think about it. Recolle itself...probably isn't real." Now that's a pretty bold statement on his part since Fynn likes to think he's very grounded in his reality unlike everyone else. So to hear him talking like this is worrisome. "The timing of these 'newfound powers' is probably thanks to our least favorite corporation." If they're going with the idea that everything Retrospec has done is apart of some giant experiment, then of course all of them should've expected something like this to transpire.

"It's just bound to get worse from here, I think." Fynn mutters as he cautiously walks down to the next level. They're close to the garage area. "We're nothing more than a bunch of lab rats at this point. Rats trapped in an elaborate maze."

Togusa hesitates on a landing and looks at Fynn seriously. "Yeah... I get it." But why? It's a question that Fynn, himself, doesn't seem able to answer. And it doesn't suggest the best things about this world that the brothers come from. It might be as simple as the protectiveness Fynn feels for Ardyn here, replicating itself there. If Ardyn had to hurt himself every time he healed someone? And Fynn had to just watch him do it without being able to help?

Yeah. Togusa would hate magic, too.

"There's something real about this place," Togusa has to insist. "The things we do here, the people in this city matter. You're right about the timing, but there has to be some substance to this. If we're lab rats, there's something outside of the maze. Something they want to apply their experiment results to." Togusa might have been thinking about this more and more over the last few months. People keep coming up with theories of other worlds and games, things Togusa doesn't buy, doesn't want to get too attached to one theory.

"We'll get there. But, for now." Togusa steps down off the stairs, and he is eyeing that door cautiously. "Any guesses on what's waiting for us?" The garage is back to a large open area. Tactical nightmare.

If Fynn knew "why" magic bothers him so much, then maybe he could at least make sense of some things. He just doesn't like magic and he particularly doesn't like the kind of magic Ardyn wields. Of course he seen what happened to Ardyn when he tried to heal his wound. Fynn was chopping up some vegetables for dinner when the knife slipped. He cut himself pretty badly and of course Ardyn rushed over to help. That marks the first time Ardyn actually used his powers, he thinks.

The look of surprise upon his brother's face alarmed him greatly but what Fynn noticed was the slight trickle of blood that ran down from his brother's hand. Instead of just healing the wound, it felt more like Ardyn just transferred the wound onto himself to heal him. That's not...good. Not in Fynn's book.

"Do they really matter?" Fynn asks as he tries to clear his head here. He feels like he has cobwebs in his mind right about now. "If everything here is real, then what's all this? The monsters, Retrospec...the memories? What's all this?' He knows that it's unfair to pelt Togusa with these questions but who else can he talk to? He can't talk to Ardyn about this nor Juzo. Prompto isn't someone he views as his equal and he honestly wouldn't trust Freya enough with a conversation like this. So in the end, all he has is just Togusa. His colleague is the one who's been actively tracking and observing Retrospec's every move since the first time he met him. Out of everyone in this city, Fynn knows he can trust Togusa to make some sort of sense of this shit.

"I don't know anymore. This entire fiasco just wears me out." He states honestly before glancing towards the door ahead.

"No idea but let's find out." Fynn smirks some. He'll worry about the philosophical stuff later. For now, he needs to remain focused. "Got your cellphone on you? Have you tried giving your friend a ring?"

Ardyn had figured out the drawback by the time he had spoken to Togusa, and had been as upfront as the man ever is. Maybe Togusa just has the advantage of being pretty good at translating Ardyn to English.

It only doesn't feel like a burden because it's constantly on Togusa's mind. There's always some section of his brain tied in to figuring out the Retrospec problem. It helps him ignore the things he's seen, reminding himself that it doesn't have to be true. "Whether it's a past life, another world, or just stuff being made up by Retrospec? What we're seeing is stuff we can't change. We can keep changing what's going on in this life. So that's my priority."

"What if the monsters are like the chocobos, though? Things that people remember? I even-" Togusa frowns. "I even said it, that if these are from another world, it's easier for Retrospec to bring in something that already 'exists' instead of make something up from scratch." Togusa runs a frustrated hand over his face.

Breathe. He's keeping it quiet, his tone low, but he needs to be ready for another fight. "Koutarou's not that good about keeping his phone on him anyway." But he does as Fynn suggests, checks his phone, only to frown again. "Damnit. Everything's down. Even Retrospec. This didn't happen during the blackout."

Togusa closes his eyes, tries to focus for a second. He can feel the new power in himself. All right. Time to try some things out, instead of just reacting. He opens his eyes and nods when he's ready, reaches for the door.

"You think these monsters are from...another world too?" That's a novel concept that Fynn honestly hadn't thought of until now. He turns towards his colleague and gives a slight nod in agreement. "That's not as farfetched as it sounds but I feel sorry for anyone who has to live with those red flying bats!" A slight chuckle escapes him as he thinks about that. Imagine coming home from a long day at work only to find those spooky Vampyr bats hanging around in your house. Fynn would burn the entire estate down with a torch if that ever happened to him.

The humorous thought brings a slight smile to his face, one that he's been truly lacking as of late. Well, whatever 'boogey man' exists within whatever world I might be from---I hope they're friendly." He's trying to take this all in stride, keyword being "trying".

"Eh? What kind of guy doesn't keep a cellphone in this day and age?" Fynn questions with an incredulous look upon his face. Just who the hell is this Koutarou? Is he some sort of Japanese country bumpkin? Fynn would ask but he doesn't want to seem rude. That's Togusa's friend after all.

"Right, so that makes this even more difficult." Of course this would be more difficult than necessary. Why else would life make anything easy for once? Fynn can't help but roll his eyes some. He really needs a vacation after everything is said and done. "The network is down for you too, huh?" Fynn can't help but frown some. "I was hoping it was just my phone's reception but guess I was wrong on that." He makes sure to reload while he can. Bullets might be scarce but he needs to make sure they're ready for whatever the hell is inside the garage

"Three!" On cue, Fynn has Togusa open the door as he rushes inside with is gun drawn.

Koutarou is just really really really absent-minded, okay, Fynn? It's cool, they'll find him. Eventually.

They came out on the same side as the loading dock, so not only is the parking garage filled with normal cars, but a few trucks are nearby, things used to move in the video game machines, tents, and displays. It's a good sign for getting people out, but it's bad if they want to clear this area to turn it into an exit point.

The area is noticeably quieter after the echo of the stairwell. It's hard to tell if they're truly alone, or if the way the garage is built is just damping the sound around them so much. Togusa takes a few cautious steps forwards, keeping his eyes trained on the level around them. His heart and breathing are the loudest sounds in his ears, so he works to quiet them. Calm. Stay focused.

It's there, above them, something hanging upside down from the upper level. Wings unfurl, and it starts to swoop down as silently as it can, hoping to catch Fynn and Togusa unaware.
rygdea: (Ho snap!)

Nobody can possibly be that absentminded in the middle of a crisis. Then again, Fynn absolutely never met Koutarou before. Nevertheless, he's hoping Togusa's friend made it out of the convention hall by now. This is a bad spot to be in during an invasion like this. Maybe Koutarou made it out among the crowd earlier, who knows?

Quiet is good. The lack of screaming and terror is always a good thing. The garage might be filled with all sorts of cars and trucks but so far, everything seems relatively normal. That's a good thing but Fynn can't shake that feeling of being watched. Something is definitely down here but he's not certain as of what. He follows along with Togusa slowly, gun drawn. The officer keeps his eyes peeled for anything unusual until he heard something from above. It's faint but it sounds something like wings flapping---

"Togusa, watch out!" Without much warning, Fynn pushes his colleague out of the way and a pair of sharp claws strike him that second.

Togusa cries out, and that field flares to life around him for just an instant when Fynn shoves him. He turns back, and yells when he sees that something is on Fynn. "NO!"

He doesn't even identify the target, he just reaches out with this power and grabs it. His face contorts into an expression of pure rage as he focuses again, lifts the thing away from Fynn, but keeps a hold of it. Tendrils of yellow energy are surrounding the bat, as it struggles to flap its wings, snap at the empty air in front of it.

"Fynn! Talk to me, Fynn!" The signs of effort show instantly, Togusa is straining to keep it in place, but like hell is he going to let go.
